January Catchup//Update

january catchup
Hey everybody, how are you all doing? I hope you’re all great ^_^ I wanted to bring this little end of the month thing back and stick to it this time. The main thing that held me back from doing this little round up in the past was the lack of relevant photos I’ve taken, but that’s not a good enough excuse anymore! Also I quite enjoy the ‘catchup’ thing instead.

January 2015 was on the whole brilliant. I got insured and everything commuting wise has changed. Of course the first few times were terrifying driving to Uni, which is around 20ish miles away, but now I’m finally getting the hang of the route and it’s becoming really enjoyable. There are still two large and crisscrossy roundabouts that freak me out a little bit, I get my head around what lane I’m supposed to be in and suddenly I realise the traffic lights have turned red? It’s a lot to take in, and SOME PEOPLE ARE SO RUDE/IMPATIENT but on the whole, it’s been fantastic. Also cutting my commuting down time by 40 minutes is wonderful, as well as not having to wait for the bus in -3 temperature is all I’ve wanted since I started Uni so I’m super grateful to be able to drive at last ^_^

january catchup

I finally got a new phone, the iphone6, which is beautiful in every way and the screen-size has made such a difference! It’s perfect for watching videos, checking through the lecture slides and taking beautiful photos.

Uni wise assignments have been quite stressful, I'm not sure why I struggled to start them when I know how hard stress can hit towards the end. But I really enjoyed one of them, the personality one where the task was to analyse Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone through the humanistic perspective. When I got into it, I really really enjoyed it and to be honest that’s the first time I have enjoyed writing a paper since the first semester of last year.

January has been the first full month of my ‘appreciating what I already have by not buying anymore makeup’ thing and I cannot tell you all how much I’ve enjoyed it. For two main reasons, the first being I have actually been able to see what I have and truly notice what I own and use it up. Secondly restraining myself from buying makeup means that I find out what I REALLY want y’know? If I haven’t thought about a specific thing twice in a week, clearly I don’t really want or need it (lool). It has also been really refreshing NOT getting parcels for the first time in two years, and actually seeing products used up is brilliant.

February is looking to be a great month, less assignments and a little more plans than January (other than stressing over assignments).

How was your first month of 2015?

Review | Rimmel Kate Lasting Finish Lipstick 08

Rimmel Lasting Finish lipstick by Kate Moss - 08 review and swatch

Hello! Yet another lip product review for you today - this time a cheaper one that the likes of NARS! Rimmel’s lipsticks are fantastic, and the lasting finish range, by Kate Moss (£5.49) are some of the best in the whole drugstore. I own 5 from the range, but the one I haven’t been able to put down for several months is the shade 08. The packaging for this range is simple, sturdy and with Kate’s signature on the lid and the shade number and colour at the bottom of the lipstick.

Rimmel Lasting Finish By Kate Lipstick - 08 review and swatch

The formula is lovely and creamy, it glides on the lips and does a good job of not accentuating any dry bits. I find this the kind of lipstick that is fuss free and its kinda like a ‘grab and go’ lippie.  You don’t need to really make sure they’re prepped like you would with matte lips, and I don’t find this drying after it has faded away. That’s probably the main reason why this has lived in my makeup bag and gone about with me everywhere for quite a while!  The downside is that despite the name, it’s not exactly long lasting. I get about 3 and a half hours of wear from this before I need to reapply. For the shade and formula, plus how easy it is to reapply I can forgive the lasting power - it’s just a shame they claim it to be longlasting!

Rimmel Lasting Finish By Kate Lipstick - 08 review and swatch

The colour itself is a stunning dusty rosy pink with a tinge of mauve and looks so flattering on warm skintones, as well as cool! It’s just beautifully flattering and the kind of shade that works no matter the occasion. It’s also the kinda lipstick that I can just pull out and swipe on just before work, uni or a coffee with a friend - and I don’t even need a mirror.

Rimmel Lasting Finish By Kate Lipstick - 08 review and swatch

Final Verdict:

Rating: 9

Pros: A gorgeous everyday mauvy rose colour, universally flattering, creamy, non-drying, affordable, functional sturdy packaging, pigmented.

Cons: Not really all that long lasting. But that’s about it, I couldn’t ask for more from a lippie of this price.

Repurchase? Yes!

Have you tried any lipsticks from the Kate lasting finish line?

Review | NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bahama

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bahama review and swatch
Hey ladies! Today I’m going to be reviewing my first ever NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil (£18) link. These pencils have so much hype online and they’re a cult product, plus its NARS so you can be sure I had high expectations! As usual I love the packaging, simple, functional and so very Narsissist with the colour at the end making it easy to distinguish from the rest (...that’ll be in my collection come May mwahahaa). Its a chubby pencil, comfortable to hold and not retractable - still need to buy their pencil sharpener, ehh.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bahama review and swatchFormula: What makes these so special is that although they’re pencils, they’re as creamy as you can get in this form. This pencil doesn’t dry out my lips and it doesn’t ‘set’ on the lips like a hard mask either. It’s the most comfortable, long wearing matte formula that I own so I totally understand why it gets so much hype. The only thing you have to remember though is to exfoliate and balm the lips well before. The word Velvet is right! Whilst it doesn’t DRY the lips out, it does highlight the dry bits and no-one really likes that look, so do the prep and it’ll be well worth it.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bahama review and swatchColour: This shade is very similar to that dark mauvey Kylie Jenner look everyone was obsessed with. Its a pink and brown mixed together, with a dash of mauve. On my lips the brown comes through more than the pink and its a shade that somehow manages to pull my whole face together without any effort.  I like wearing this alone, however sometimes I want to make it a little lighter and mixing it with Rimmel’s lip liner in spice reviewed here is probably my favourite way to wear it.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bahama review and swatch
Price: The only thing that makes me sad about this pencil is the price. Don’t get me wrong, its the best lip pencil I’ve ever tried and so worth a high price tag but not too friendly for a student budget!  I still prefer to hold out and wait for the ASOS sales when I can pick it up for 20% off!
It’s easy to reapply, doesn’t fade patchy and the colour is super versatile ^_^

Final Verdict:
Rating: 9
Pros: The colour looks sophisticated, the packaging is great, it’s as creamy and non-drying as a lip pencil can get. It’s long lasting, it doesn’t fade or flake and it has wonderful pigmentation. Reapplication is seamless.
Cons: None of my jumbo sharpeners seem to fit so it looks like I’ll have to purchase the official one. Also if you haven’t prepped the lips beforehand, dryness will stand out.
Repurchase?  Yes, I love the colour and everything else about it. Just have to wait till a nice 20% off sale of course!

Thank-you for reading ♥

Review | Illamasqua Cream Blush in Seduce

illamasqua cream blush in seduce review and swatch

Hello everyone, today I’m going to be reviewing an Illamasqua cream blush which is pretty scary looking in the pan, and it goes by the name of ‘Seduce’. If you’re a regular reader of my blog you will know that I swear by Illamasqua blushers, they are just WONDERFUL at doing them right... I own 6 of them and have no regrets, because I just love them! You can purchase this blush here for £21.50 (although I’d keep an eye out for their amazing sales).

illamasqua cream blush in seduce review and swatch

Illamasqua blushers are all packaged the same, and most people will agree with the term ‘bulky’ to describe them. I can easily fit six of them in half a muji drawer as they stack neatly, but I do think the design is just a little over the top, especially when travelling. I’m much more likely to put a NARS blusher in my travel makeup bag over this. Also is has no mirror - which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but with packaging that big, I would have liked to see one.

illamasqua cream blush in seduce review and swatch

Clunky packaging aside, this cream blush when first opened had a layer of liquid over the top. I think the reason was because the consistency of Illamasqua’s cream blushers are much more on the liquid side than the cream/moosey type. These cream blushers are meant to be useable for the lips too, and when I swatched it for the first time on my hand, it looked a little bit like a lip stain. I will say that on the lips its pretty and like a berry shade but not too harsh. On the cheeks it’s dewy looking and a finish I really really enjoy.

illamasqua cream blush in seduce review and swatch

Seduce is a mix between magenta and berry, leaning more on the pink side. In the pan - yikes this blush does not look friendly. But on the skin, it transfers beautifully as a healthy and vibrant pink flush with a dewy finish. You can change the intensity to a muted medium pink or a super strong one which means it really looks stunning on every skintone.  For fair skins I recommend tapping off the majority onto the back of your hand first and then applying it, but for medium to dark skins tap the blush just over the contour line and blend upwards and this’ll give the most gorgeous sculpted look.

illamasqua cream blush in seduce review and swatch
Swatched unblended and blended out - see how sheer it becomes!

My favourite and only way I apply this is with my fingers because I get to control the intensity and the warmth of my fingers help it melt into the skin without any streaky blush marks. This is a stunning ‘I’ve been walking out in the cold’ kinda shade. The only  qualm I have with it is the lasting power. I’m used to Illamasqua blushers lasting at least 9/10 hours on my skin and this one fades by 7 hours. A faint stain is left so it doesn’t totally disappear, but I wish it would last long enough for me to wear on a typical uni day when I need my makeup to last all day - oh and I have normal/dry skin so I imagine it would last a lot less than on oily skin.

Overall Rating
Rating: 7
Pros: The intensity is easy to control, you can go for a bold look or a muted blush. The shade is really unique in my collection its a strong magenta with a hint of purple and it suits my skintone whether its pale or bronzed up.
Cons: If not blended in, it can look patchy on the skin. It can look a little intense if over applied. The lasting power isn’t on par to the full price.
Repurchase? Yes I would if I bought it on sale again as the shade is stunning, but not for the full RRP.

Bronzing on a Budget | E.L.F Contouring Blush & Bronzing Cream

bronzing on a budget e.l.f contouring blush and bronzing cream review and swatch

Hey everybody, I hope you’re all well! I’m finally adding another post to one of my favourite series and today its focused on a cream bronzer and blusher duo. If you were to ask me to recommend you 5 products to pick up from E.L.F, this would be one of them. In the range there are at least two powder versions available, however both the bronzers contain shimmer and because of this I just wasn’t the biggest fan. This cream version however is in a whole new league of drugstore bronzers!

bronzing on a budget e.l.f contouring blush and bronzing cream review and swatch

It is packaged in the standard, can get a little grubby, black plastic casing with a decent mirror inside. In my opinion its sturdy and super convenient for travelling. You get about 4g of blush and 4g of bronzer which is a really decent amount for the £3.95 price.

bronzing on a budget e.l.f contouring blush and bronzing cream review and swatch

I find the shade of the bronzer so versatile, it would look great from fair to medium skintones as it can be applied very lightly or built up. It has a light orange undertone, but leans more on the neutral side which makes it great for really warming up the face.  A little bit goes a long way and it blends beautifully into the skin without looking blotchy or streaky. At the moment I’m trying out the Dior NudeSkin foundation which is a smidge too light for me. This and the bourjois bronzing primer both work equally well for warming up the face and the fact that it adds a really gorgeous natural warmth makes it so amazing.

bronzing on a budget e.l.f contouring blush and bronzing cream review and swatch

I find the words ‘contouring’ a little bit deceptive, you can achieve a very light type of contour if you layer this up bit by bit, but too much and it may end up looking too orange.  Before I bought the L.A Girl Pro Concealers  this is what I used under powder contour, for a long lasting structured contour. However the LA girl concealers in beautiful bronze and toast are deeper and work better for contouring (read my review with swatches here). This bronze and blush duo could probably make a decent contour shade for light skin-tones, but mainly its wonderful for warming up the face without much effort at all!

bronzing on a budget e.l.f contouring blush and bronzing cream review and swatch

The best way to apply this duo is using fingers in my opinion, its the easiest way to apply a small amount and not go overboard. By drawing small lines under the cheekbones, around the perimeters or the face and a little on the side of the nose and then blending out the bronzer with the E.L.F Small Duo-Fibre Brush the product is perfectly blended out. The colour of the blusher is perfect with the shade of bronzer, it is a medium coral tone, not too pink and not too orange which matches the bronzer beautifully. I love applying and blending the blush with the warmth of my fingers because that’s how it looks to most natural, and I can add a little more if I need too.

Bronzer Roundup!

Orange or Red?

Neutral to slightly orange.

Pigmented?

Yes very pigmented, but also super blendable as it is a cream product, so don’t worry if it comes on too strong at first!

Matte or Shimmer?

Matte, but again due to its consistency it isn’t flat looking. It doesn't dry down to a powder finish in my opinion, more of a satin finish which looks super natural and is one of the main reasons why I adore it.

Buy Again?

Yes I would buy it again! This bronzer is just wonderful, and works great for me to warm up my face with a light base. Definitely one to add to your list next time you’re having a E.L.F shop!

January Birchbox ft. Women’s Health

january birchbox 2015 women'shealth review and first impressions

Hello everyone I hope you’re all doing well. Again I’m sorry for the delay with this month’s Birchbox, it came right in the middle of my stress week and I just didn’t have the time. Today however I’m ready to share to my thoughts and I think I’ll try to keep it as to the point as possible! If you want to know more about birchbox you can read another post on it here and the reward system post here. So anyway I was thrilled when I saw a little sneak peak of the January birchbox as the range of brands this month are awesome! The collaboration with Women’sHealth is just perfect for this month, the month where everyone gets a new year and hopefully a renewed feeling of determination and inspiration!

january birchbox 2015

The design of this box is adorable, the illustrations, the colour scheme and everything about it - I adore it. The theme this month is #HitRefreshChallenge and as usual you get a card with a little letter from the Editorial Director of birchbox as well as a mini magazine. In this magazine or booklet, you get 12 bite-sized challenges and I its such a creative and fun thing to get involved in! Each page is a bright colour with the challenge and the rationale for the challenge written directly underneath. On the other side are some tips to help you get on with challenges, and in some of these they give suggestions on how to use the products included in the box. It really gets you motivated to do that challenge - complete with a little tick box too!

REN Glycolactic renewal mask pilates band

I love... the REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask (£30), regular readers of my blog will know I’m a big fan of REN skincare which is super clean and very effective. I have heard so much about these exfoliating treatments and so far this tube has lived up to its hype. I’ve had positive results after one use! My only cheeky complaint it that they gave us 10ml too little, I’d appreciate at least 5/6 uses of a mask to truly see its potential to my skin. I also loved the Birchbox Pilates Band (£7.99) which I’ve heard is brilliant for helping to tone and strengthen the body.

healgel body beauty protector protect and detangle spray stila lip glaze glow

I like... the HealGel Body (£39.50) which is (after a bit of research) created by a bunch of plastic surgeons and other specialists and supposed to be excellent for after sun. I’m hoping this will make help me get rid of the dryness around my eyes which look horrendous when I accidently put concealer over it. I was thrilled to see another product from Beauty Protector - their Protect & Detangle Spray (£14) not pictured, unfortunately I misplaced it? :c which is a birchbox exclusive. It smells nice and protects the hair from heat damage. Now as a hijab wearer heat doesn’t meet my hair often, BUT I’m pleased I don’t need to go out and purchase one for when I do want to play with heat!  I got the Stila lip glaze (£15) in the shade glow. At first I wasn’t too pleased with the shade because of the little shimmers or the lipgloss in general, but when I applied it, I actually enjoyed it. It glides on and feels a little sticky, like all gloss must I suppose but this makes it last longer. This shade looks beautiful over a pink lipstick but I know the shimmer won’t be everyone’s cuppa tea. Before I received this I wouldn’t have given this range another look due to the price for a lipgloss, however I am interested in looking for some of their most pinky/brown nudes as I think they would look stunning alone or over some of my favourite lipsticks and liners.

Activbod Feel Great Shower Concentrate matcha superbod green tea

I’m Not Too Fussed About... the Activbod Feel Great Shower Concentrate (£5) it’s just a little meh. And I’d much rather spend £6 on a Soap & Glory bottle which smells wonderful and feels great too.

Oh and I’m not a green tea fan so I’ll be passing that on to mum, although I have to admit the ‘Matcha’ superfood which contains 10 times the antioxidants of normal green tea, does sound wonderful.

Overall rating for this box: 7.5

Highlights and summary: The kick-start to the new year and the motivational team feeling of sharing #hitrefreshchallenge. The REN mask is also amazing, personally I wouldn’t pay £30 for a mask without the chance to try it first, so I was stoked to have this in my box. Furthermore the Pilates band is a great addition to everyone’s fitness routine. However overall the selection of products were not my favourite and I enjoyed December’s quite a bit more.

If you would like to subscribe to birchbox, or you just fancy your own January box with similar contents, feel free to use my referral link here which will earn us both £5 to spend in the e-shop! You can also get £5 OFF January’s box by using the code: JAN5. Also if you’re interested in any of the brands mentioned in the post, including the green tea you can shop them here.

Review | MeMeMe Beat the Blues - Oyster Gold Illuminator & Highlighter

Review MeMeMe Beat the Blues - Oyster Gold Illuminator & Highlighter review swatch
Hello! Today I’m going to be reviewing a liquid highlighter from quite a unknown brand in my opinion - mememe. I think the main reason why it’s not that heard of is because it’s not available anywhere else other than online.
This ‘illuminator and highlighter’ is packaged in a glass bottle and looks very similar to a nail polish bottle. The applicator of the highlighter is also just like a nail polish bottle, which makes it super easy to apply too.
Review MeMeMe Beat the Blues - Oyster Gold Illuminator & Highlighter review swatch
I’ve found that you can change the intensity of the highlighter by either dabbing a few dots on the cheekbones and blending out with the warmth of the ring finger. This is my favourite way of applying it for the daily as it leaves a light and gentle yellow-golden sheen which catches the light so beautifully. HOWEVER - and I write it in capital letters, it is extremely difficult to work with if you apply too many dots. I find that two just on the top of the cheekbones is enough to blend into the cheekbones. When you apply too much, it can look blotchy and like liquid dried on top of powder - not a pretty look and certainly not easy to blend out once it is set there. So do one side of the face at the time and remember with this stuff - less is more!
Review MeMeMe Beat the Blues - Oyster Gold Illuminator & Highlighter review swatchReview MeMeMe Beat the Blues - Oyster Gold Illuminator & Highlighter review swatch
Unblended // swatched natural light
If you want a stronger and slightly more w-o-a-h dash of highlight you can stroke it on the top of the cheekbone, leave it for a few seconds and then dap the top with your finger. This will intensify the highlight and to be honest its only a look I plan on wearing for special occasions. The colour of the highlighter is a yellow/silverish shade and so looks gorgeously flattering on warm skintones, especially on those with an olive complexion.
Review MeMeMe Beat the Blues - Oyster Gold Illuminator & Highlighter review swatchReview MeMeMe Beat the Blues - Oyster Gold Illuminator & Highlighter review swatch
swatched with flash
The second way you can use this is as an illuminator mixed with your foundation. I didn’t have high expectations for this method, however I mixed a little bit in with half a pump of my bourjois happy light foundation, which unfortunately is a tad too dark and - it worked wonders! Not only did it add a stunning subtle glow without looking glittery,  but I felt like it also lightened to shade a tiny bit without impacting the coverage. This way of using the highlighter is much more failproof than the first and I highly recommend trying this if you want to liven up your skin a little or add some life into a matte base.
Now this highlighter has been compered to benefit’s highbeam, and although I do not own it, I know from researching swatches that Benefit’s version is a lot more bronze in colour and so I wouldn’t call them dupes. You get 12ml of the highlighter which is a generous amount for the RRP £5.50 link here.
P.S Please excuse the lip liner swatches, I had popped into boots for some S&G goodness and had to swatch Clarin’s lipliners - isn’t the one of the right hand side stunning?? #Need
IMG_1907 (800x533)
Final Verdict:
Rating: 7
Pros: Great value for money, golden toned so looks awesome on warm complexions, can be built up, can be used mixed in with foundation which so far has produced outstanding results, the applicator is easy to use.
Cons: When you apply too much it can look terrible on the skin - blotchy and far too obvious! The ingredients include mineral oil...which in small doses probably isn’t too bad but for those of you who like to avoid, there’s a heads up.
Repurchase?  Probably will do if I get the most out of this bottle by the end of the year!

Have you tried anything from mememe?

This or That | Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz V Brow Pomade

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz V Brow Pomade
Hello everyone I hope you’re all well, and I’m so sorry I’ve not been able to post on my blog for over 10 days :c but more on that in the Jan update post. Today I wanted to introduce another new ‘series’ type thing on The Blushing Giraffe ohhhh exciting! I’ve been so indecisive on what to call this, eventually deciding on ‘this or that’ but if I think of something better I’ll change it before I add another tile to my little side bar thing. Anyways, the idea behind this is pretty simple - take two similar(ish) products from my stash, compare, list out pros and cons and hopefully give you guys a good idea about which one YOU might prefer. It’s not necessarily about finding dupes, because as you can see by my first one, they’re two very different types of product for the same purpose. BUT if two things are actually dupes, then woohoo!

Today both products are from the Queen of brows herself - Anastasia Beverly Hills! I bought both of these from Cult Beauty here and they cost around the same amount. Both are obviously for the eyebrows, with the brow wiz being a cult product way before 2014, and the pomade exploding across the beauty world in the last year.

This or That Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in brunette V Brow Pomade in chocolate review comparison swatch

So, on the left hand side we have the ABH Brow Wiz in Brunette. Costs £15.50.

This or That Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in brunette V Brow Pomade in chocolate review comparison swatch`This or That Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in brunette V Brow Pomade in chocolate review comparison swatch

The PROS:

- This pencil is extremely quick and easy to use, you can fill in sparseness and shape the brows literally within a minute and a half - if that. I lightly trace a line from the start of the  bottom of my brow and continue till the tail. Then starting half way on the top part of the brow I add a little more ‘hair strokes’ and blend it to join with the natural arch of my brow. I finish by running the spoolie through it and I’m left with effortlessly groomed brows!

- The ‘crayon’ part is very thin and can add extra shape to brows that have been brutally attacked with a pair of tweezers or a tired eyebrow threading lady.

- The pencil mimics brow hairs perfectly, which helps it to look very natural and nothing like the experience I’ve had with previous eyebrow pencils. When used lightly you can trace on little little lines that look just like hair, and voila you have beautifully shaped brows.

- As I don’t remove any hairs from my brows, they’re a bit of an uneven shape, however the brow wiz traces in the gaps so finely and precisely that you’d be forgiven for thinking I was born with well shaped, great eyebrows.

- There is an amazing shade range available from the lightest blondest to the darkest brunettes.

- THE SPOOLIE ON THIS THING

This or That Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in brunette V Brow Pomade in chocolate review comparison swatch

The spoolie on the opposite end is what dreams are made of, seriously never have I had the pleasure of using such a wonderful blending tool on za brows! The size of the  wand is small enough to blend out even the tail of the brow. It really does manage to remove excess product without smudging it around the brow and it really does take away any harshness.

This or That Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in brunette V Brow Pomade in chocolate review comparison swatch
Now there aren’t many, but like anything....THE CONS:

It’s not cheap for a brow product and for those who cannot justify £15 on a brow pencil, I’d recommend you try the Soap and Glory version of this, which I have heard is excellent

- In the UK it can be tricky to find the right match as we can’t physically test them out. I had to go by guess and for me brunette is actually a tad darker than I would prefer. Yes there are lots of photos and videos available online but sometimes that makes picking the right colour even more confusing.

- The lids for both ends just don’t seem to stay on that well??

- If used on a daily basis this wouldn’t last you half as long as the pomade, and as the price is more than the pomade again it isn’t the best value for money.

On the right hand side sits the ABH Dip Brow Pomade in Chocolate! This costs £15.00.

The PROs:

A little goes a long long way as this stuff is pigmented. Because of this, it really is worth the price you pay because even if used every single day, it would still last you at least a year.

- The soft creamy texture grips onto the brow hairs with ease and makes it easy to add more shape and create thicker looking brows. I have see some insane brow tutorials with this stuff on IG, which show almost no hair there and then amazing brows in place. I’ve also seen some awesome natural looking brows achieved using this, my favourite is right here.

The pomade lasts all day, no matter wind, rain, sun you will come home and find your brows in tact (which if I’m honest can look a bit odd if the rest of your makeup has been melted away by the sun, but hey brow game still strong? I’m not complaining!)

- It is a very unique and innovative makeup product, I know some artists would use gel liner before, but this is specifically designed for the brows and so the texture is perfect for the brows. Gel liners can also be off colour, I hate to think how scary I would look if I used my Rimmel gel liner rather than this!

- With the right tools you are able to create amazing yet soft brows, or really strong Cara-esque brows. Practise is essential but once you get the hang of it, this product can literally change you whole makeup look. We all know that a good set of eyebrows are magically able to give you the whole pulled together look and few products are able to achieve that in the same way this can.

- The glass packaging looks classy with the rose gold logo ontop of the lid.

- The shade range again means that everyone is catered for.

As I’ve had this for many months now, I am able to state the CONs:

Although the dip brow itself will last you a long time, if you do not have a decent brow brush it makes the application so much harder. I don’t love to use the RT one as its HUGE and my brows are naturally thin so it can be really messy. At the same time my ebay brow brush is great for drawing faint lines under and over but its not excellent at actually filling in the hair. So in order to get the most out of this, in my opinion, you’ll need to invest in a good brow brush, and I’m very close to giving in and purchasing one from her line because I know it’ll work so much better than my current ones!

- Once you apply this is sets very fast and can be stubborn to blend out, so you have to work carefully but quickly to avoid harsh lines and splodges. Again this is something that I am sure you would find less tricky if you invested in a decent brow brush.

- A spoolie is ESSENTIAL. If you don’t have one you’re gonna achieve the sharpie marker look.

- It can be time consuming to apply and certainly takes longer than the brow wiz!

So now you have a decent idea on the good and bad of both, it’s time for the conclusion!

I think you would love the dip brow if you are lacking brow hair, live in a hot country, play sports a lot, need your make-up to last the whole day, don’t mind spending extra time on the brows. I think you would love the brow wiz if you have thin brows that need a bit of help with length and filling in with sparseness. If you need a product that has everything rolled into one, you can use on the go, can get you the naturally full brow look.

Honestly I find it so hard to pick between the two, which one I would repurchase....but if I was PUSHED... it would have to be the brow wiz. I've been obsessed with this of late, it’s everything I need in a brow pencil and the spoolie is magical. Again as I don’t shape my brows by removing hairs, it helps them to look much more full and even in a couple of seconds so fits in well with a very busy routine. Although I CAN achieve awesome brows with the pomade it takes longer and a lot of practise. Lets be honest...I’ll probably end up repurchasing both, but if you only wanted to invest in one, I hope this has been somewhat helpful. Oh and YouTube is always very helpful for tutorials with the pomade if it overwhelms you at first!

Review | The Balm Bahama Mama Bronzer

the balm bahama mama bronzer review swatch

The Balm is in my opinion one of the most under-rated brands in the makeup world. I’m so glad Mary-Lou Manizer became super popular and everyone fell in love with that champagne/golden glow that shines like no other! Quirky packaging, high-quality products, strong pigmentation and long lasting - what is not to love? Today I'm going to be reviewing the bronzer/contour powder from their line called 'bahama mama.'

Update: I'm shocked that this bronzer is now £17??? Honestly guys I recommend this contour kit which is double the price of this, but has a lot more product and more uses!

The illustration on Bahama Mama is not my most favourite from their line, but it certainly fits in with the whole hawwii bronzing theme. And also, you can’t deny the detail and effort in the illustration! So much more interesting than a lot of other brands, which is one of the reasons I adore the Balm, they add such personality to their products!

Packaging
This bronzer is encased in rectangular cardboard packaging, i’ve travelled with this bronzer before and not experienced any breakage. It’s more susceptible to little dents and what not, but nothing that causes any major problems. The bronzer is encased in a little sleeve which I thought was a really cute protective step they took, and when you push the bronzer out from the sleeve you find the identical packaging. It opens like a little book and has a magnetic closing. On the left hand side there is a mirror which is surprisingly useful size for travelling as you can focus on the eyes/lips or the whole face. On the back is one of those QR codes which links you to a video tutorial, again so cute and innovative, however I’m left a tiny bit disappointed because for research purposes I downloaded a scanner and...video was not found. Ah well.

Bronzer Colour and Use
As you can see, this matte bronzer is dark and it means BUSINESS. I would describe the colour as a medium/dark brown crossed with a little grey, which makes it wonderful for sculpting out cheekbones that you never knew were possible! The tone of the bronzer is so unique in that it creates shadows fantastically well in sight. I tend to use this after I have already bronzed up my face with the bourjois bronzing primer or alone when I want to embrace a paler face but feel like adding sharp cheekbones that morning. If you are the skin tone NC20-35 or below I wouldn’t recommend this for bronzing, as it’s a little too dark and you run the risky of looking quite orangish and muddy in some lights, but do use it for sculpting and contouring! If you’re below NC20 and heavy handed, I would advise you to stay away from this for the same muddy reason. If you are NC40+ this could work well as a bronzer and/or contour depending on intensity.

Bronzer Pigmentation and Lasting power
This is nicely pigmented like all the Balm products, however if you use a moderate hand you can pick up the right amount to sweep in the contours of the face perfectly. I appreciate that it’s not as saturated as Mary-Lou! I don’t find myself going back and forth trying to add more as it doesn’t lack pigment, however it is super blendable and I find it easy to soften out the intensity which I really appreciate - dark streaks down the cheek are never a great look. This lasts all day on my skin, so a huge thumbs up there. Only slight niggle I have with the powder is that as it’s quite soft (and easily blended) it can get a little messy in the pan. I tend to sweep my brush once and use that on one cheek, and then pick up the loose powder to use on the other cheeks.

Bronzer Size and Price
You get 7.08g of the stuff and it costs around £13.50  £12.15 from here (currently on sale).  Now in comparison to other contour powders like Sleek’s this is almost half the amount. However the bourjois duo also gives you around 7g of bronzer, and the Balm actually give around 2g more than you would get in a NARS duo of Laguna. With that in mind I think it is a bargain price, due to it’s unique tone of being able to properly contour without orange/red tones and also the small amount you need each time! This pan will no doubt last me till it expires and because of that I think it’s money well spent. On top of that I ALWAYS buy my The Balm products in the ASOS beauty sales, saving enough to make me content to add to my collection!

Overall Rating

Rating: 9

Pros: Great for sculpting cheekbones and adding shadows. In fact it’s one of the BEST contour powders I’ve ever tried for my chubby cheeks. The tone of the powder is unique and unlike any bronzer I’ve seen in the drugstore, it balances warmth with cool shadow so well! A little goes a long way and it blends really well - no streaks. The packaging has a travel friendly mirror. It’s pretty versatile for those who are of warmer skintones.

Cons: It’s not cool enough to be a contour for lighter complexions unless used with a VERY light hand.

Repurchase? Yes, this is such a wonderful product for round faces and for most skintones - I know I won’t be without it!
