March Update// My University Course

Uni course and experience developmental and educational psychology

Hello everyone, as March was a pretty dull month I’ve decided that this update post should be more of a requested one about my University course and experience so far. I took Psychology, English Literature and History for A-levels and to be honest with you sixth-form were the worst two years of my life so far. Really. Although having less timetabled hours was great, the level of work was incredibly stressful, a huge huge jump from GCSEs and there was SO much pressure that it took a lot of joy out of learning, instead making you end up despising the subjects, mornings and external students (well just one of them..ha)

Anyway I digress...during sixthform we were given these career appointments and all I could really tell my advisor was that I wanted to go into a field where I help people. It was either that or teaching which I had always enjoyed since volunteering for Duke of Edinburgh. From the three subjects I was studying, my favourite was Psychology but I just wasn’t really 100% sure about the prospect of studying it at higher level, it felt like a huge decision to make at the age of 16/17, like someone asking you ‘Ok you have £24K loan to choose a degree that will shape your future and most likely influence your whole life!!1!’ and it was VERY daunting. I remember hating the fact that I wasn’t one of those people who had their whole future planned out at the age of 10, knowing that medicine is their destiny and nothing else would do... but reflecting on that, life is incredibly unpredictable and most of the people I know who applied for med school didn’t get in, so perhaps it’s not so bad y’know??

Finding the right course for me..
Anyway I went to a couple of open days and there was only one course which really grabbed my attention, and that, of course is what I’m doing right now: ‘Developmental and Educational Psychology.’  It had the perfect mix of interesting content  (Psychology and its endless routes and job opportunities) and practicality - the education side of it as I was pretty unsure about whether to go down the primary education route or the simple psychology one - honestly it felt like it was made for me and I was soooo relieved I knew I found the missing piece to the puzzle, which made the rest of A-levels a little bit more bearable because for this Uni and course I didn’t need the highest grades, in fact I achieved a lot higher in my A-levels than I needed to get into that University, but as I didn’t want to live away and also because the course was so perfect and actually made me really WANT to go to Uni, I chose it and don’t regret that decision.

For me, getting into a particular university wasn’t important, it was choosing a course I knew I would enjoy but would challenge me at the same time. My advice to anyone looking to start uni is to go along to open days and as many as you can. I went to one open day in which the whole Psychology talk was about a student’s exchange year in another country! Totally unrelated and not useful at all. It was fair to say I was very put off. Another uni which was BEAUTIFUL itself was heavily Biological-Psychology based and they made it clear that their psychology courses are more focused on the neuro-science side of things, which just wasn’t for me. You have to remember that you’re investing a lot of time AND money into the next 3/4 years of your life, so choosing a course that ticks most of your boxes is essential

First Year
The first year of Uni was pretty good. Half the course felt like in-depth revision from A-levels, but the other half consisted of education modules in which we looked at the education system and the history of it. One of my favourite modules was ‘Psychology in Practise’ which had many different tutors who taught us about the fields in which psychology reaches and if we were to go into those fields, what our roles would be. I found it so interesting learning about how much Psychology impacts almost every area of life, from sport to education to the work place and the health field. As the course is focused on developmental psychology, my fellow peers had a separate module in which we focused on the classic psychologists and studies involving developmental learning. Those were some of my favourite seminars because working with children is something I do in my part-time job and learning about their development and enhancing my understanding was really interesting, something I genuinely enjoyed doing. Of course the worst part of first year and second for me was (is??) research methods. That is one thing I will warn anyone who is thinking of taking a Psychology degree course, the use of SPSS and statistics is unavoidable (believe me, if there was a way I would have found it by now).

Commuting
I was always sure that I wanted to commute to Uni and  I know for a lot of people the whole moving away and being a student in a new city thing is really important, but the whole student lifestyle just is not for me. Call me old fashioned but there is nothing better than the comfort of my room, in my house with my family. Plus I found the prices to live away horrendous, I mean we are already being forced to pay £9K a year and why would I want to add a couple more big Ks to live in a small, uncomfortable room with potentially horrible people as neigh- okay you get my drift! I wrote that half jokingly - I totally see the advantages of moving away for uni and becoming independent, as well as it being easier to make friends and have people there for support with assignments and stuff. So y’know there are pros and cons for both, I myself don’t regrets staying home at all and for the record - it’s alright to commute if that is what you’re comfortable with. Plus I have a job that I love and no student accommodation is worth leaving that for ._.
Also a HUGE plus about commuting is driving, my route to uni takes about 35-40 minutes in the car and its such a beautiful drive, I love having that time to relax and just think about everything y’know? Plus after a year and a semester of commuting via train and bus it is G L O R I O U S to be able to drive, it really really is!

Second Year So Far..
Honestly I cannot believe second year is almost over, it has been a bit of a blur and it’s incredibly daunting that this time next year I will be almost ready to submit my dissertation!! I’m still not 100% sure which route I’ll take post grad, but I’m leaning heavily on doing a PGCE and working in a junior school as its the one career choice I know I won’t regret. In reality I would love to become a qualified educational psychologist, that is probably my dream job but lets be honest here - to do a PHD you have to have a lot of motivation for studying, meeting tight deadlines and putting in a heck of a load of work and money to reach that end goal and right now I just don’t think I’m ready for that. We shall just see where life takes us ^_^

To answer Amina’s questions about my favourite thing about my uni - probably two of the lecturers, they really really make me want to do well and work hard, they make their lectures interesting and they’re also very happy to help when you need it - honestly guys take as much support and you can find bcos 9K OK!!! 9K! but yeah those two lecturers and also the timetable, I love that I’ve only had one 9am start a week - winning!! My favourite thing about my studies, well I already answered that above, but to sum up its the fact that my course is literally perfect for me (apart from SPSS).
I hope that post answered any questions you may have had, quite a long ramble and I was a bit unsure about how much to write and how many people will probably fall asleep reading this, but there ya go - you lovely ladies asked for it so I hope it’s what you wanted I guess!
I’d love to know your stories and experiences, did you go to Uni? Did you love it there? Are you using your degree well or doing something totally different? Please do leave a comment ^_^

Thank-you for reading ♥

Review, Swatch + Dupes | Wet’n’Wild Mega Last Matte Lipstick Collection Part 1 - Brights and Bolds

Wet’n’Wild Mega Last Matte Lipstick Collection Part 1 - Brights and Bolds - Purty Persimmon, Smokin’ Hot Pink, Stoplight Red, Sugar Plum Fairy and Cherry Bomb review and swatch

Hello everyone! Today I am going to share with you the first part of my wet’n’wild lipstick collection - the brights and the bold shades. I order all of my American cosmetics from the site ‘beautyjoint.com’ and this line costs $2.75 per lipstick which translates to roughly £1.85 a lipstick - very budget friendly!
Wet’n’Wild Mega Last Matte Lipstick Collection Part 1 - Brights and Bolds - Purty Persimmon, Smokin’ Hot Pink, Stoplight Red, Sugar Plum Fairy and Cherry Bomb review and swatch
The finishes aren’t all matte, I would say they’re a mix with some of them being more on the satin side but each of them very pigmented which is one the best things about them! The packaging is what you would expect for such an affordable line and its kind of annoying how the lipstick gets in the lid no matter how careful you are as you can’t wind them all down. Irritating but I can excuse it for the price! The shape of the bullet isn’t perfect as its pretty much a slanted circle so with bright shades a lip brush can be handy, although I usually just apply a little at a time to avoid messy application.
I also like how they have the name on the bottom of the lipstick and that you can see the shade at the top unlike lipsticks in opaque packaging. In general they last about 3-4 hours before I have to reapply. Pretty standard for a lipstick of this finish but much better than those super creamy formulas which don’t stay put for more than an hour.If you want an even longer application then apply it, blot and then apply again which will prolong the wear time.
I’m going to run through the shades, any dupes I have found courtesy of the internet to more expensive lipsticks and the finish of each lipstick too ^_^ It’s always handy to pick of a dupe of a £15+ lipstick to see if you really like the shade on your own skintone before splashing the cash, especially in the UK as you can’t return cosmetics!

L-R:  Purty Persimmon, Smokin’ Hot Pink, Stoplight Red, Sugar Plum Fairy and Cherry Bomb the shades with Flash

1.Purty Persimmon / 970
The most flattering orange/red shade I have tried and a must have for anyone with tanned skin because this colour compliments the warmth in our skins so well! For someone who loves the neutral shades this is just on the verge of being a bit TOO bright - but for those of you who enjoy bright shades pick this beauty up. It applies smoothly without dragging on the lips and its most definitely a satin finish and very much non-drying. I would only really wear this in the summer time as it is rather loud and vibrant but I’m glad I finally found an orange shade which really pops and sits well with my skintone. Oh and a word of warning - this shade transfers quite a bit so carry it around when wearing it.

Overall Rating: 4 Stars

2. Smokin’ Hot Pink / 905D
This is a medium/hot pink shade which actually leans on the very red side in certain lights. I have a pretty love/hate relationship with it because sometimes I feel like it sits well with my warm skintone and other times it looks a little tacky?? The formula of this shade is more matte and therefore a little drying on the lips but it does last longer on the lips, around 5 hours. It’s essential to prep by exfoliating and putting on lipbalm a while before hand. Again this is another summer funtime shade for me, I couldn’t get away with wearing it to work nor would I feel that comfortable wearing it to uni. My personal favourite way of wearing this is layered with a deeper lipstick and because of that I don’t think I will be repurchasing this as it just hasn’t ticked enough boxes for me.
no supposed dupes, but do search swatches for an idea of the shade
Overall Rating: 3.5 stars

3. Stoplight Red / 911D
The most beautiful medium red shade I have come across or otherwise known as ‘hollywood red’. Its a red shade that isn’t blue-toned or orange. Personally I find that deeper reds suit my medium skintone more but I can still pull off this shade. The formula is less matte than smokin hot pink and so I do recommend using a lip liner to properly define the lips so it doesn’t smudge around the edges as its such a vibrant colour. It has a touch of pink in it when swatched but it comes across as a true red on the lips. I think this is one of the most universal shades of the line and it will really suit all skintones.
DUPE FOR: MAC’s Ruby Woo swatch and credit here, YSL Rouge Pur Couture swatch and credit here, NARS Carthage swatch and credit here.
Overall Rating: 4 Stars
4. Sugar Plum Fairy / 908C
I ADORE this shade, a beautiful and flattering purple with a slight pink tone. Its a fun shade to wear and I imagine it suits many skintones, I know it looks stunning of light/medium skin especially! Again the pigmentation is fabulous, one swipe is all you need to get a lovely even application and it fades beautifully too. It is matte but not drying and very comfortable to wear on the lips. I don’t need a lipliner to wear it and it lasts at least 5 hours on the lips which is impressive (even with eating).  When it does fade it leaves a lovely lighter stainFor the price I seriously recommend everyone pick this beauty up, you can’t get much better than this beauty.
DUPE FOR: Exact dupe for MAC’s Rebel Swatch and Credit here ethical and so much cheaper!
Overall Rating: 5 Stars

5. Cherry Bomb / 918D
One of the darkest lipsticks in my collection and surprisingly its really flattering too. It makes my lips look fuller and on me the shade comes off as a deep burgundy shade. It has a slight blue undertone which makes my lips look whiter -always a good thing and it has just the right amount of vampyness to it. I love mixing this with Sugar Plum Fairy but both shades are beautiful alone. It’s pretty matte so be sure to prep the lips before application! I also like tapping this gently against the lips to sheer out the deep colour making it a little more wearable for normal situations. Also this one really does stain the lips properly which I don’t mind as its quite a flattering colour, just apply some balm on top and you’re good to go.
DUPE FOR: An exact dupe for MAC’s Diva swatch and credit here.
Overall Rating: 4 Stars
Wet’n’Wild Mega Last Matte Lipstick Collection Part 1 - Brights and Bolds - Purty Persimmon, Smokin’ Hot Pink, Stoplight Red, Sugar Plum Fairy and Cherry Bomb review and swatch
In my experience I have found that none of these shades bleed or fade unevenly (unless you haven’t prepped your lips for the drier ones of course) and for the price the quality is outstanding! Why spend £20 on a bright lipstick you’ll hardly wear when you have the opportunity to pick one from this range which will deliver the same if not better pigmentation, without burning a hole in your bank account...seriously if you’re looking for a bright or everyday lipstick for a decent price - look no further!
Part 2 will be the lighter and neutral shades, some of my absolute favourite in my whole collection and that will probably be up in a week or so. Also I will have more swatches on my IG @theblushinggiraffe in a couple of days so you can see how they look on my skintone ^_^
Have you tried any of the wet’n’wild lipsticks?

A Trio Of Empties #2

empties post lush ocean salt face and body scrub bourjois dissolvant 1 seconde nail polish remover nuxe reve de miel day cream

Hey guys, hope you’re all doing well. Today I have another three empty products to discuss with you, my part 1 is here and the reason why I split it into threes is because they’re much more manageable than collecting a whole basketful of essentially rubbish! Plus I get to ramble on a bit more ^_^

1. Lush Ocean Salt Face and Body Scrub* | £13.95

I finally came to the end of this tub which is quite a generous amount for the price. I actually got this at my first Lush blogger event all those months ago and I guess it took me so long to use because I have pretty mixed feelings about it. Personally I found it too gritty and a little harsh to use as a facial exfoliator and I much prefer gentle exfoliators. However when used on arms and legs it buffs away dead skin and leaves them feeling silky and smooth. The two reasons why I’m not head over heels about this is because firstly it can sting a little which is most probably the sea salt! Nonetheless I’d rather not have the stinging and I’m sure there are similarly priced alternatives which will give me the same result. Secondly this contains actual vodka which I didn’t realise until I got towards the end and someone on IG told me about it...why it contains vodka I’m not 100% sure but as Muslims aren’t supposed to drink the stuff I’m sure we aren’t meant to use it in a scrub either ._.

Repurchase? Aesthetically pleasing to look at yeah, but too many cons for me pick this up again! I would love to try the Soap and Glory breakfast scrub next.

2. Bourjois Magic Nail Polish Remover | £4.99 £3.99

I believe this is the first nail polish pot thing to come into the market and I for one really enjoyed it. Although it doesn’t quite take the 1 seconde it states on the pot, it does take away the mess of the pads and actually makes the whole removal process cheaper as well as quicker. The only downside I found was that glitter polish does not mix well with the sponge in the pot here at all! Also right at the end of its use my fingers kind of started to turn black as the makeup remover itself ran out and the sponge could probably have seen better days. It was easy enough to wash off, just a little annoying but I suppose one can expect that. Anyways its on sale at ASOS atm (linked above) so I may pick it up on payday if its still there.

Repurchase? If its not on sale I’d be interested in trying some alternatives but to be honest I enjoyed it enough to buy again for around a fiver.

3. Nuxe Reve de Miel Ultra Comfortable Face Cream -Day Cream | £23

I LOVED this moisturiser, easily the best one I have tried and in this case the price really paid off. I did manage to get it for around £15 which softened the blow but it lasted for around 6 months of daily use and it was incredibly hydrating and soothing. I believe this cream is one of the main reasons why my skin became less dry and more on the normal side of things and every time I applied it my skin felt really happy y’know? Plump, soothed and prepped for the whole day. It is scented but a comfortable scent nothing strong or over-powering. I’m not used to seeing a big difference with skincare and this is a moisturiser I really adored but the price isn’t student friendly enough for me to justify till there is a significant sale on sadly :c Currently I’m using a budget friendly boots botanics moisturiser which is nice but nothing to write home about, so if you do have dry skin I would 100% recommend you picking this up if you can.

Repurchase: Yes! But when there is a sale on so I’ll be keeping an eye out.

March Skincare Haul

March skincare haul una brennan nip fab goodthings glycolic fix serum soap and glory

I was in desperate need of a skincare refresh, I tend to wait till I’ve finished two or three things and then go all out and pick up a bunch of products to try. Everything in this haul is new to me - very exciting stuff and it just so happened that boots had their wonderful 3for2 offer on so I placed a collect in store order - since I didn’t really have £50 to spend on skincare (and pay for delivery??? you’re having a laugh!).

Una Brennan Vitamin C+ Brighten cleansing oil Nip + Fab Glyolic Fix Cleanser Good Things Manuka Honey Cleanser

Being a fan of both of the Una Brennan face masks that I own I decided to purchase the Vitamin C+ Brighten cleansing oil (£10.99) which is filled with lots of natural oils - Olive, grapeseed and rosehip in particular. This is designed to be used as part of a double cleanse routine so you apply a few drops directly on top of makeup and then you’re supposed to add water to make it all milky. I’ve used this three times already I do enjoy it, especially the packaging. Also the amount of product you get makes the price awesome - 200ml!

The second cleanser I picked up was quite a random decision, the Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Cleanser (£7.95), which was kind of sticky when I opened the box, so I’m not sure if that’s due to poor packaging or the person who put the order together being very careless. Anyway I’m not one to usually go for foaming cleansers as they’re not wonderful for the skin, and I personally wouldn’t use this daily but the main reason why I was intrigued enough to purchase it was because the 2% glycolic acid is supposed to retexture the skin and sometimes I feel like a normal cleanser just isn’t doing much - this one will be used for when I feel like my skin needs a thorough deep clean. Probably followed by a weekly face mask.

Finally I purchased the Good Things Manuka Honey Creamy Cleanser (£4.99) after trying the face mask version of this and quite enjoying it! I adore this brand as it is free from mineral oils and parabens, plus this range is designed to ‘hydrate and balance’ which is what my skin needs these days. It directs you to use a damp flannel but to be honest I can’t keep up with daily flannels, it’s too much with the laundry so I just double rinse. It left my skin feels super soft and I will most likely use this as a morning cleanser because it will remove the traces of oil and gel from my night-time routine easily whilst still cleaning the skin neatly.

Argan Oil Moisture Boost Facial Serum soap and glory mini mitt

Another products from the Good Things range, this time their Argan Oil Moisture Boost Facial Serum (£7.99). The main this thing that attracted me to this was the three words ‘sweet almond oil’ - my favourite! I jumped on the hydraluron bangwagon when that serum first came out and I was left feeling quite ‘ehhh’ it seemed to work at first but my skin just resisted it after a few weeks. This is cheaper and for first use I was really impressed at how well it helped my moisturiser to really sink into the skin and I feel like my base for my makeup was wonderful. Lets hope my skin doesn’t resist this!

I have seen the Soap and Glory Mini Mitt (£4.00) floating around the blogosphere for a while but I couldn’t find it in store, so I knew I had to pick this up online. I think this will just add an extra depth to cleansing and scrubs and I cannot wait to add this to my skincare routine ^_^

Yes To grapefruit uneven skin tone daily facial scrub soap and glory fab pore 2-in-1 pore purifying mask and peel

I’ve never tried anything from the Yes to range so I thought I would give this Yes To grapefruit uneven skin tone daily facial scrub (£6.99) a whirl. It has 99% natural ingredients which I LOVE and its made from lemon balm and grapefruit. I’m currently using the Soap and Glory daily facial polish twice a week, but when I’m finished with that I’ll switch to this - it’s fun to try different scrubs y’know? Also I think the price is on point ^_^

The final mask is one that isn’t really suited for my skintype, its the Soap and Glory Fab Pore 2-in-1 Pore Purifying Mask & Peel (£10) but I bought it mainly out of curiosity and also for those days when my skin is feeling a little greasy is that the right word? It claims to  be good at unclogging pores, spot prevention, and face detoxing and it is advised that if you’re battling breakouts to use it twice a week - the reviews online are outstanding so I’m hoping I feel the same.

Glycolic Fix Exfoliating Facial Pads

The final part of my haul is these Glycolic Fix Exfoliating Facial Pads (£12.99) which are again a completely new addition to my skincare routine and totally inspired by the Beautiful Onika who’s blog I’ve been obsessed with recently! As mentioned above with the cleanser version of this, the glycolic element is designed to brighten, retexture and resurface the skin. I doubt I’ll be implementing this into my everyday routine for fear of them drying out my skin, but we shall see how well they work.

And that is about it..Boots still have a 3for2 offer on at the moment so it’s well worth stocking up now and saving some monies!

Sidenote - I just went onto Onika’s blog to get her URL and link it when I stumbled across just one of her Amazing posts all about how to treat acne scars, how to protect the skin etc; you NEED to check it out, this girl is amazing and I love her writing style, seriously amazed by her blog! link here

Have you tried any of these products? I’d love to know how you got on with them!

Thank-you for reading ♥

Review | Dior Backstage Blender Sponge

dior backstage blender professionnal finish fluid foundation sponge

Hello everybody, I hope you’re all doing well. Today I will be reviewing the Dior Backstage Blender sponge which I mentioned when I reviewed the Dior Skin Nude Foundation here. It is the best way to use that foundation in my experience and I am sure it will work just as beautifully with the Dior Skin Star as it was released alongside it. Now many of you were surprised that Dior had their own sponge and you will be even more surprised to find out that this sponge actually costs less than the beautyblender! From Boots  £12 but you could get it for just over a tenner from here which is where I ordered mine from ^_^

If you’re wondering if this is a dupe for the Bblender.. the simple answer is no it really isn’t. The first and main difference is that it is designed to be used dry which if I’m honest is brilliant, no need to get up and wet it in the bathroom because you forgot JUST before you got comfy Don’t pretend that doesn’t annoy you even a little bit! It also isn’t that perfect cute lil egg shape, more of a flat bottomed, slightly elongated egg. Here is Dior’s description of it:

The egg-shaped, ergonomic Fluid Foundation Sponge delivers seamless application, even in the most hard-to-reach places, for a radiant and sculpted studio finish.

Application tips:
1- Use the side of the sponge to blend foundation over the entire face.
2- Use the tip to apply foundation on specific areas (wings of the nose, eye contour, etc.)
The base can be used to adjust coverage on areas that require greater correction.

Dior backstage blender review

It is a lot more firm and tougher than the beauty blender and it doesn’t lightly bounce against your face because of the texture. So no it’s not as soft and perhaps soothing to use as the pink egg but I do find that it soaks up less foundation than the damp beauty blender. The tip is great for areas around the nose and the base is great for when you need a little more coverage.

The way I use the backstage blender...

I don’t recommend you bounce this against your skin in the same motion as you would with a damp blending sponge because that really is quite painful. Instead push the sponge against the skin and kinda roll the foundation, so not exactly stippling, but a gentle pushing/patting motion instead. You literally need to pat the liquid in to get the best finish, and with this sponge I get no cakeyness or streaks. I don’t use this with my under-eye concealer, partly because the warmth of my fingers do a better job - but also because I do think its a little too firm for the under-eyes and when I’m doing a full on highlight and contour look I prefer to use the beauty blender as it has a much softer texture.

So Overall...I’m glad I picked this up because it gives me the best finish with my DiorSkin Nude foundation and I know I’ll get the most out of that because of this sponge. It also absorbs less foundation and saves you the hassle of wetting it.

Would I pick this over the beauty blender if I only had to choose one? No.

The Beauty blender is fantastic for blending in liquid and cream products and does have a great deal of versatility which is why it’s worth the price. I think you should consider getting this if you own any of the DiorSkin foundations as it really does give a finish no brush could achieve, however I warn you now - the hardness takes a bit of getting used it!

What is your favourite tool for foundation application?

Review | Essence Stays No Matter What Jumbo Eye Pencil - 05 Cute Copper & 08 Chocolate Brownie

essence Stays No Matter What Jumbo Eye Pencil - 05 Cute Copper & 08 Chocolate Brownie review and swatch

Hello everyone! Today I’m going to be reviewing these jumbo pencils from Essence which I first featured in this haul. I purchased them from Wilko and they cost me £1.50 each - I know, INSANE! It was literally love at first swatch and for that price I could hardly say no could I??

essence Stays No Matter What Jumbo Eye Pencil - 05 Cute Copper & 08 Chocolate Brownie review and swatch

The packaging is that of a standard jumbo pencil, and yes you do have to sharpen these. As you can see the writing has faded a lot which reminds me of the collection lasting perfection concealer, cheap and cheerful so I’m not surprised.

These are not quite as creamy as the Rimmel Scandaleyes version, however they are more pigmented and it doesn’t take much for the colour to show up. The formula does set pretty quickly, but you can just about blend out the edges for a quick smoky eye if you wish.  I primarily use both of them as an eyeshadow base, alone they last a decent 7-8 hours on my eyelids, but underneath eyeshadow they stay put and prolong shadow wear time for at least 10 hours, which for the price is pretty wonderful!

essence Stays No Matter What Jumbo Eye Pencil - 05 Cute Copper & 08 Chocolate Brownie review and swatch

Cute Copper 05 is GORGEOUS, if you have brown eyes you need this shade in your life because it makes my eye colour stand out so beautifully! A somewhat metalic(ish) copper colour with hints of gold shimmer which don’t look tacky, they simply catch the sunlight and look like you’ve put a lot more effort into your eye-makeup then a simple swipe! I apply this all over and then add a darker brown shadow in the outer corner of the eyelid, pop some eyeliner on and I’m good to go. The speed of application is another great plus point.

Chocolate Brownie 08 is less metallic, but as you can see it does have a slight copper undertone which is (again) perfect for brown eyes, although I imagine these two would look stunning on green and hazel eyes too. I love to use chocolate brownie on the lower lash line, or if I’m feeling really fancy, I smudge a little where I would normally do a winged liner.

I think these are phenomenal for the price, they’re versatile, easy to use and these two colours in particular are perfect. I know they also do a green, blue, black and white but I’m not sure I’d get enough use out of them to add to my collection.

Overall Rating
Rating: 9

Pros: Highly pigmented, great as eyeshadow bases, last a decent amount of time alone, both colours are stunning for brown eyes in particular but cute copper with its slight golden undertone is just breath taking! Super affordable and quick to use.
Cons: You have to sharpen it, the writing come off the packaging.

Repurchase? Yes I would 100% buy these again - you just can’t go wrong at that price ^_^

rimmel lip liner tiramisu rimmel kate lasting finish 03 essence XXXL longlasting matt effect 06 lipgloss swatch review

Hey guys! A quick post today on my current most reached for lip products today. These three together have been my favourite ‘lip cocktail’ and they’ve been in my makeup bag for two months straight. Personally I dislike spending a lot of money on lip products, I think the drugstore is excellent in that department, so these are all affordable you’ll be pleased to know ^_^ I’ve been loving a brown/pinkish lip of late, but I also can’t resist a bit of mauve either, mixing it all up!

Rimmel 1000 Kisses Lip Liner in Tiramisu

I’ve already professed my love for for the 1000 kisses lip liner range with my review of the shade Spice read here, and Tiramisu is the same wonderful formula, creamy yet still defining. Tiramisu is a mix of orange and brown, used lightly it can subtly add shape and definition, however you can get a browner colour by layer it up a little.

Rimmel Kate Lasting Finish Lipstick 03

I always used to think this was a light pink, but it actually has a tiny touch of peach too. Alone this doesn’t look great on my lips, I can just about get away with it, but it does look like a bit too pale and ghostly. For lighter skintones this’ll be an amazing nude shade! Anyways the formula of this is creamy, pigmented and on top of the lip liner it adds a bit of omph to the whole neutral tiramisu affair.

Essence XXXL longlasting Lip Gloss MATT Effect shade 06

And the final part of my current lip favourites is something I’ve loved since I bought it. Its not really matte, its more of a cream finish and its a lovely slightly mauvish pink tone which feels so soft on the lips, and just tones down the orange/brown a little! I also like wearing this on top of Sleek’s Matte Me in Birthday suit, again to tone down the darkness there. Really affordable and one of my most used lip products ever, I need more and you should try them too, they’re luvlehhh!

And there you have it, my current favourite lip combo - what have you been loving on the lips recently?

Review | Diorskin Nude Foundation in 31

diorskin nude foundation review and swatch 31

Hello everyone! Today I’m going to be reviewing my first ever Dior foundation. This is the lightest from the three in the ‘Diorskin’ range, suitably named the Diorskin Nude (£32.00). I picked this up on the whim actually when I saw a flash sale of 20% off, and I just couldn’t resist - darn you online shopping. It has SPF 15 and gives a light/medium coverage.

diorskin nude foundation review and swatch 31

Packaging
If I had only one word? Luxurious. Glass bottle, silver detailing, the lid has a ‘CD’ on the top, and Diorskin engraved on the bottle too. It feels weighty and it feels worth the price you pay - me likes!

The formula and coverage
This foundation is called ‘Nude’ and from that name I kind of thought it would have a dewy look on the skin. However I would describe the overall finish as velvet/satin/slightly matte. Which actually is probably more natural looking that dewy skin now that I think about it! Although it says to shake the bottle on the back, this isn’t one of those runny types of liquids, it’s lighter than your average foundation but still, none the less a foundation texture. It gives a light/medium coverage. I tend to use 1 and a half pumps each time I wear this foundation - one for all over, and another half for areas I have more discolouration and uneven skintone. When I use two pumps I can can get almost full coverage but I feel like it starts to look a bit too much. What makes this foundation beautiful is it’s ability to even out the skintone whilst give a very natural finish to the skin and still not mask it.

Edit: I have started wearing this on top of the Soap and Glory SPF, I use two pumps and something about that spf makes the foundation apply better and look beautiful, as well as last for a long time! Skin prep is important for this one, it really does make all the difference :)

diorskin nude foundation review and swatch 31

Application and longevity
I have tried this with the backstage blender sponge, with the RT buffing brush and with my fingers. My favourite method of applying it is with the sponge, which I will have reviewed here. With a brush I feel like its a little too streaky and I tend to need more product. With my fingers - I can’t fault this application as the overall finish looks amazing, the warmth of the fingers really help the NudeSkin foundation to melt into the skin, whilst still giving great medium coverage - the only problem? It just takes far too long for everyday!

The main fault of Diorskin nude is it’s lasting time on the skin. I have normal skin and don’t powder apart from under the eyes because I hate my face looking powdery and dull. With and without primer, this lasts flawlessly on my skin for about 7 hours. After 7 hours my forehead is normally fine and so is my nose, but bizarrely around my lips and my chin it seems to fade away slightly?? It doesn’t look too bad but it is noticeable and that’s not ideal. So although the finish is lovely for a daily foundation, I can’t wear it on my 9-6 days at uni because it won’t last as well as NARS sheer glow or my Bourjois healthy mix. I was quite disappointed that none of the primers I own made a difference, however if I do find something that helps it last longer I’ll add it here.

**Edit: I have started wearing this on top of the Soap and Glory SPF, I use two pumps and something about that spf makes the foundation apply better and look beautiful, as well as last for  a long time! Skin prep is important for this one, it really does make all the difference :)**

diorskin nude 31 diorskin star 31 foundation swatch

Shade of 31..
When I first applied this I got quite a shock because I was expecting it to be a lot warmer, and on my skin upon application it does look a little light. The reason I expected it to be warmer was because I had been using the Diorskin star sample which you can see above in the middle and right hand side is a lot more orange and warm. So I’m not super impressed with the shade range here. Luckily for me I wear a hijab and don’t show my neck so the fact that my face doesn’t match it at first isn’t a big deal, but I nearly always bronze up when I wear this to avoid looking ghostly. I do find that around 3 hours later the colour oxidises a LITTLE and matches me better, but at first it can look too light without a bit of  chanel tan de soleil! I think I’m very used to buying bases that are one shade darker than my skintone for that healthy radiant look and as a heads up, this certainly is not. I would say its a hair lighter than my skintone and ever so slightly on the neutral side rather and yellow.

Oh and for those wondering about the Dior colour system, as far as I know shades ending in 1 are yellow toned, 0 are neutral and 2 is pink toned. Regardless, DO be sure to pick up a sample before purchasing (they’re super generous with their samples, which is always a great thing).

Overall Rating

Rating: 8

Pros: It has a really natural velvet finish, blends beautifully into the skin, evens out skintone, gorgeous packaging, has buildable coverage, you don’t need a setting powder.

Cons: The shade range is limited, it can accentuate dry patches, lasting time on my skin isn’t great if you don't prep your skin well.

Repurchase?  *update 12/6/15* Since using this with the due of SPF and Rimmel primer I am LOVING this for everyday, so I probably will repurchase at somepoint, just not right away. I was reading this back and realised how important prep is and how it can change your whole opinion on bases! It's not an immediate repurchase, but I most likely will one day ^_^

Hijab & Jewels | SLHijabs and Kira Official Handmade Purse

south london hijab slhijab kira official handstitched handmade leather purse review the blushing giraffe

Hello! I today I’m going to add to my ‘hijab and jewels’ section of the blog, with reviews from two wonderful companies that are worth checking out ^_^

south london hijabs review

Starting off with South London Hijabs, I wasn’t sure if I was gonna do a full on review for hijab companies on my blog. However I reminded myself that ultimately its my blog, if I want a little section for headscarves and jewels and gems from small hardworking companies, then I shall have that! So to kick it all off I present to you

South London Hijabs

They sell hijabs (obvs)  and the range is really impressive ^_^

Standard plain colours, two colour ombre, three colour ombre and the patterned ones too (including mosaic and floral). You can also purchase the Dina Torkia range of super high quality hijabs and the fur cape too.

I was kindly sent two of the ombre ones, pictured on the left which I am so grateful for, thankyou so much Mariyah! My absolute favourite is the grey and pink ombre one because it is so versatile. On one end it is dark grey which fades into a lighter grey and then becomes a pretty pink shade. I usually wear it with the majority of the grey showing and a little of the pink peaking through, but sometimes I just wrap it around quick style and have the pink on the side.

slhijabs

I’ve owned both hijabs for a good few months now and I’ve worn the grey and pink probably twice a week which is pretty excessive, but when I love a scarf I just cannot get enough, and this was no exception. Considering the price, I would expect this to have frayed or warn a little, considering how often I wear it, but much to my surprise its holding up really well! I also love the material, its 100% viscose, and great for all types of weather. I’m normally always hot, which is weird considering I’m from England but apparently it’s runs in the family..ANYWAYS point it, this scarf doesn’t ever make me feel hot and bothered and when I take the time and actually use pins, it also stays in place all day.

south london hijabs revieww

Affordable yet good quality, a variety of colours and styles to choose from and most importantly a range which is so wearable. Even if you don’t wear a headscarf and you’ve been looking for a lightweight scarf to add a pop of colour to your wardrobe I’d highly recommend checking out this company - oh and you can purchase/view the store:

The second company I want to share with you all is quite a new one, based on instagram and the uniqueness of these gorgeous purses* really drew me to them! There is something so special about handmade items and also items that are not available to purchase from your typical topshop or newlook store. A sort of exclusivity and specialness about them y’know?

kiraofficial leather uk purse

It is about the size of my hand, and closes with a sturdy button. The colour was so hard to capture on camera, and there is a much more accurate colour on their instagram found here as well as pictures of the other 4 colours available! I adore this teal colour and the tan one, they’re both so stunning! The embossing on the purse gives it an ethnic touch and I love how you can see the hand done stitching, again that whole unique one-off piece look.

kiraofficialukleatherpurse

Inside the purse, its lined with two different patterned fabrics, another touch I LOVE. There is a zip compartment which is ideal for things you don’t want slipping out, such as money and lipsticks. Personally this is going to be my new ‘emergency’ purse, I did have a heart shaped one from ASOS but unfortunately it was too small to fit in half the things I feel that I need in case of an emergency. In the zipless compartment I’m going to keep paracetemol, my pocket mirror and a small bottle of handcream. Inside the zipped one will be lip balm, travalo, an emergency fiver, a concealer, lipliner and a mini sized ‘they’re real’ mascara because those are my freshening up makeup essentials. This purse fits ALL of that in with room to spare!

kiraofficialtealleatherpurse

The envelope design of the purse means it can slot easily inside all shaped bags. For someone who swaps bags between uni, work, social and likes to go between two or three, one of these emergency purses are necessary to keep everything I could possibly need (plus extra) altogether and move it between one to another without wasting time and space.

This purse is multi-functional and would make a gorgeous gift for pretty much anyone! I know my sister would love and make use of it just as much as my bestfriend, plus with an affordable pricetag of £10, it’s a total bargain ^_^ As they are all handmade I would recommend you having a look as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

February Favourites 2015

February favourites 2015 the blushing giraffe

Hello! *skips the rant about how fast Feb went by* this month I have quite a range of products I’ve been loving and I don’t have a whole lot of time to write this, so lets get started ^_^

For whatever reason, I got out of the habit of exfoliating for a little while and my skin really started to show that. It wasn’t as smooth and didn’t look as squeaky clean, even when it is has been cleaned as deeply as I could manage. I was rummaging around in my box of cleansers//other and I found this polish. Now I do think the fact that it says ‘daily’ is a little bit ridiculous as I can’t imagine how damaging this or indeed any other scrub would be on a daily basis, but twice a week it works a real treat. My skin feels cleaner, smoother and brighter and makeup application is so much better. The beads in this are really small and you do need to massage it in gently, but the effects are well worth the extra few minutes a week. My skin hasn’t looked so good with and without makeup, since I’ve been using this twice a week ^_^

nars duo orgasm and laguna, dior transat nude edition highlighter, kevyn aucoin sensual skin enhancer sx08

DIORSKIN NUDE TAN GOLDEN SHIMMER POWDER (LE) TRANSAT EDITION

Now this is limited ed from the 2014 summer collection so I didn’t want to dedicate a whole post to it’s beauty, but I have linked you to the site where I purchased it and you can sign up to an email notification in case it does come into stock. Anyways this gorgeous and ridiculously luxu highlighter was used on all my aunties during a family wedding function and they loved it as much as I do. Its highly pigmented, super fine-milled, and best of all yellow toned which is so flattering on olive skintones. Plus the whole compact, velvet pouch and kabuki brush *sighs a sigh of happiness*

This duo is another purchase from summer of last year when ASOS stocked the two most iconic blush and bronzer shades together. It isn’t limited ed, you can find it on sephora but anyways I don’t think people of NC30-NC40 could get a better combination. Orgasm is slightly red in tone and certainly not as universal as my favourite reviewed here but regardless, it looks beautiful on warmer skintones. Laguna too works beautifully on light-medium skintones, it’s not as pigmented as Too Faced Chocolate Soleil medium/deep bronzer which makes it ideal for a quick contour and it also doubles up as a bronzer, adding the perfect amount of subtle warmth. For travelling this duo with its mirror is essential - love it!

kevyn aucoin sensual skin enhancer sx08, rimmel londn salon pro posh trash, essence blush in 50 sweetheart

I’ve already reviewed this here so to put it short and sweetly: highly pigmented, multi-functional and well worth every penny. Although, yes it was a painful slap in the face to my bank account last year ._.

I haven’t had a nail polish fave in ages, and I think I’ll dedicate a whole post to this one because it really is that lovely. Posh trash is the closest nude metallic shade I will probably ever find. My sister described it as a muted taupe, but I see it as more of a muted rose gold, either way its classy yet polished. The formula is of a great consistency and it has lasted 4 days before chipping (without a top coat, because I didn’t have time). This range is well worth checking out, and I get them even cheaper than from boots and superdrug ;D (linked above).

Another blush I’ve been obsessed with is this pretty little number from Essence. When I brush this onto my cheeks it really gives a gorgeous ‘lit from within’ glow on the cheeks, despite how cliche that sounds - it’s what I imagine the hourglass ambient light blushers appear on the skin. To think you can get such a beautiful, subtle yet glowing look from such an affordable brand is awesome - a bit  thankyou to Vanessa for recommending them to me!

soap and glory tricks of the shade lid stuff

Now before you all hate me for bringing another difficult to get product to your attention, this was actually the S&G xmas palette 2/3 years ago.. (actually I think you’re supposed to be thanking me for that..ha..ha) anyways,,you CAN get your hands on these shades, in quads rather than the limited edition large palette. The main shades I use anyway are the top 5 so when this palette does eventually hit pan, I’ll purchase that, but anyway the matte nude shade in this is everything. Its super pigmented and perfect for everyday use ^_^

If you wrote a favourites post, please link it below I love reading them! Or let me know what you've been loving the past month.
