3 Month Update | University, Turning 21 and Ramadan

the blushing giraffe update

Hello lovely readers, it has been quite a while since I've typed an update post...the last one was at the end of March! So I fee kind of out of practice, but theres a lot to talk about so lets get started ^_^

Finishing Uni and Dissertation

The main reason why I stopped with the update posts was because from April-May I was extremely stressed out with the final few weeks of my degree. I have done an all-nighter or two in previous months, but throughout April I slept for about 4 hours a night, ate terribly and was pretty delirious. My dissertation was by far one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life, it took a LOT of focus, determination, tears and prayers to get through it. When I was ready to submit it, I still didn't think it was good enough because I am very frustratingly a bit of a perfectionist. My dissertation topic was actually procrastination which I chose because its something that has affected every single student I've ever spoken too, including myself! I was able to do my study online and I want to thank each and every one of you who took the time out of their day to participate. I was so happy to find that I got all my participants in the space on 48 hours, because if you've ever conducted a study within University you will know the struggle to find people willing to take part (yay internet). Although when I think back to my dissertation I can't help but shudder, I learn a LOT during that time and all the hard work paid off because I found out three weeks ago that I got a first for it! I checked my emails after I had closed my fast and I was so excited I woke my parents up at 3:30am to tell them haha, it was something I didn't see coming in a thousand years and I took a whole day to sink in. Which I think goes to show that I can be a little hard on myself, but like I have always said if you work hard in silence success will come your way. So I will be graduating next month in'sha'Allah (God willing) and it is the end of my formal education! I feel like I've grown up so much in the past three years thanks to university, I've become a lot more independent, hardworking and determined to reach my goals. I have grown in confidence and self-belief and I have learn how to get the most out that 9K a year investment, so if anybody would like a post on how to do your dissertation well, or how to get through third year please let me know via the comments/twitter/IG!

Preparing for Post-Grad Life

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this on my blog already, but I will be starting a teacher training course from September 2016! I have gone down the School Direct route, because I love being in the moment and I personally prefer learning in that environment, rather than in a lecture theatre. So the school direct route means I will be in a school for four days a week, sharing a class with an actual teacher and then one day a week will be spent in the head training school, learning along with the other trainees. In May I had two familiarisation days where I spent in the school, meeting the teachers and the children and I really enjoyed it. It was confirmation for me that I picked the right path to go down after Uni because I could see myself in that environment learning and building bonds. If you're thinking about going into teaching but you're not too sure, I'd highly recommend you spend some time volunteering in a classroom because that'll give you a good idea in itself if its something you want to do.

Turning 21

On the 25th of May I turned 21 and it was genuinely one of the nicest birthdays I have ever had, I was woken up to a gorgeous bunch of flowers and a helium balloon and throughout the day I was gifted flowers too haha. We had dinner with all my family in my surrounding area and I just feel so blessed to have so many wonderful people in my life who really care about me. I have to give it to blogging, because without my little blog I wouldn't have met so many wonderful women and from time to time I just think about what a great decision it was to start The Blushing Giraffe haha. Being officially an adult, I mean it doesn't feel a whole lot different but I have to say it's zero fun having to pay £50 for a filling at the dentist and having to pay for eyetests too (which technically starts at the age of 19 by the way). The future is bright and exciting, it's kind of crazy that this time next year I'll almost be a qualified teacher and ready to be earning a full time salary EXCITING and simultaneously its a little sad that I am most likely going to be losing my student discount soon *overly dramatic sob*. It's okay though, that is what little siblings are for right? It's also been a year since I wrote the '20 things I want to do in my 20s post' here and I have successfully done/am doing three of them, so I'm excited to see how many more I can do in my 21st year ^_^

Ramadan!

For the past 26 days it has been the holy month of Ramadan, which is my most favourite time of the year because its a time for spiritual reflection, self-improvement, time dedicated to learning and of course time spent reading the Quran. As I get older, Ramadan seems to fly by quicker and quicker, this is the final fast on a Wednesday and I am feeling kind of emotional about that. Life is so short and the next Ramadan isn't guaranteed, it feels like I'm getting ready to say goodbye to a dear friend right now...which may sound so bizarre to those of you who aren't Muslim but I'm hoping you all kinda see what I mean! Anyways if you are a Muslim and you're always on the look out for beneficial Youtube videos, I have been in awe with the channel 'Quran Weekly' link here, highly highly recommend!

So other than finishing uni, preparing for graduation and fasting I've pretty much just been working and buying makeup and enjoying being 21 because I have a feeling this year will fly by!

How has life been for you recently?

Colourpop Haul Part 2! A lot of liquid lipsticks...

how to get colourpop to the UK

Hello all, here is my second colourpop haul - FINALLY! If you missed my first one, catch up one it here, along with a guide on getting Colourpop to the U.K. This haul consists of the products that had been on my colourpop wishlist for the loooongest time, so it was super exciting to finally get it in the post, even if I was hit with customs charges this time around!

how to get colourpop to the UK

This is a larger haul than the last, with a whole bunch of liquid lipsticks and a couple of satin lips too. I also picked up several eyebrow products as I am always on the look out for an affordable pick to get my unruly brows in order. Like I've said in my first post, ordering directly from the colourpop site and using a forwarding service is well worth the money, even if you do have to be a little patient! Since getting all my goodies in the mail, I've stacked up my muji drawers and I am so smitten ^_^ I have been a little lazy with swatches in this post (and by lazy I mean there are only a couple) but please do be patient with me, it's the final week of Ramadan so I don't have a lot of time nor energy at the moment. However there will be plenty of detailed reviews for the lips and everything else, in the next couple of weeks!

colourpop sunset blvd, on the rocks, colourpop brow pencils in bangin brunette

Starting with the eyes, I purchased two more Supershock shadows, one in Sunset blvd - basically the most perfect all over the lid shade I could have ever wanted (a muted golden with a sheen finish, not too intense like the metallic ones). The other in the shade On the rocks -  a gorgeous gold/bronze mix and honestly it was inspired 100% by this video by Desi. This has to be one of my favourite tutorials of all times that I've ever watched on YouTube and I am SOO excited to be able to recreate this look soon!

The Colourpop brow pencils definitely piqued my interest because they instantly reminded me of the ABH brow wiz (reviewed here), so I purchased two shades. The first in bangin' brunette is the one I've been using for the past few weeks and I do really like the pencil formula and how quick and easy it is to draw in the shape I want, aswell as fill in sparse areas. I do regret buying the shade black'n brown a little as it is darker than the last and I am fearful of having way too bold brows! When I do end up reaching for it, I'll do a little comparison between the two. I also had to purchase one of their brow colours, which is their version of the brow pomades. The shade I purchased was bangin'brunette, I've not even touched this yet but again a little comparison between the ABH one and the freedom one will be in the works when I do.

colourpop Tootsie, Brink, Oh Snap, Rayezor, Dopey, Grunge, Get Paid and Honeydude liner

On to the lippie pencils, I purchased quite a few on a whim. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to look up swatches before this order and I only had 15 minutes on site to put whatever I wanted in my basket and checkout (which was very stressful might I add!). I totally understand why people enjoy these and from the two I've used I can say the formula is BEAUTIFUL, super creamy, glides on without an issue and lasts well on the lips too! I only wish I could have taken more time to check out swatches first so I'd have picked up shades I'd really like OR shades I don't currently own.

I also picked up two of the Creme gel liners and I will definitely be purchasing more in the future because the formula of these is amazing. They aren't kidding when they use the word 'creme', especially the shade Get Paid (a metallic rose gold) which glides on and looks BEAUTIFUL. The second one I picked was Honeydude, a nude shade which I love to use in the waterline as it really does brighten up the eyes. I have at least three of the Rimmel liners around and I enjoy them, but they don't last longer than 3/4 hours in my waterliner which is a shame and also why I wanted to try a different brand.

colourpop Tootsie, Brink, Oh Snap, Rayezor, Dopey, Grunge, Get Paid and Honeydude liner

Swatches: Tootsie, Brink, Oh Snap, Rayezor, Dopey, Grunge, Get Paid and Honeydude.

As you can see I ended up picking up quite a few of the cool toned shades, which I don't really reach for much but I do like formula as I have said!

colourpop Chi, Bianca, Beeper, Bumble, Tulle, Kae, Chilly Chili, Lumiere 2 and StingRaye ultra matte liquid lipstick swatch

And now the Liquid lipsticks - these aren't in the correct order because some of them look so similar and I very cleverly didn't write down the order (please do note the heavy sarcasm). Anyway a lot of these do dry down darker than they look in the tube, which is why starting from this weekend I'll be reviewing them in groups of threes to be as thorough as possible. The shades I've purchased in this haul are: Chi, Bianca, Beeper, Bumble, Tulle, Kae, Chilly Chili, Lumiere 2 and StingRaye. I also had 6 from before, so it's fair to say I have a pretty crazy collection at the moment heh.

colourpop Frick N' Frack, Echo Park and Littlestitious

The ultra Satin lip shades that I purchased are: Frick N' Frack, Echo Park and Littlestitious and I am really excited to try this line out as sooo many people have raved about this formula! Anyway I shall end my haul here, I hope you enjoyed the read and makeup sure you check out my post on getting colourpop to the UK to save yourself a lot of money (especially if you're paying £10 for a $6=£4 liquid lipstick!).

Have you got any of these products? Any favourites?

Review | NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint in St Mortiz

NARS Matte Skin Tint in St Mortiz review and swatch

Hello everyone! Today I am going to be reviewing the NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint (£30.00) in the shade St Mortiz. I've had this base for a couple of weeks now and I have really enjoyed using it, especially as I'm not a regular in the matte foundation department - I prefer a satin/dewy finish myself. But recently my skintype has shifted to combo, with some areas of my face being normal and others getting oily rather quickly, so this definitely interested me. It also  received a LOT of good reviews, so of course when I saw my shade available on the ASOS 20% off sale I purchased it.

Packaging

This is the sleeker, yet equally as convenient packaging to it's elder sister the NARS Tinted Moisturiser and I really like it. It doesn't take up much room, its lightweight and non-messy too! Another reason why the packaging is so long is because you get a huge 50ml amount of product for the £30, which is pretty awesome value for money. It is almost as affordable as a highstreet base if you think about it and it certainly is the best price I've paid for a 50ml high end base.

Formula and Coverage

The formula is akin to a foundation rather than a tint, so I don't find it great to use my fingers. It does blend into the skin evenly though, using either a damp beauty blender or a buffing brush. Like I said I'm not really used to a matte finish, so to me this definitely is MATTE, which did take some getting used to. I find that as long as I've moisturised well and used my beloved Mario Badescu Facial Spray (reviewed here), it applies and sits beautifully on the skin. However when my skin is on the drier side, or I've had to skip out on the prep it does tend to catch on the little dry patches and obviously accentuate them. Prep is key here.

Coverage wise I really really like this, again its less of a tint and more of a medium coverage. It evens out the skintone and covers most of my redness around the nose. This makes it a great base to rely on for the warmer days and when the skin needs a bit of an extra help thanks to the generous coverage. This base also contains SPF 30 which makes it great for day to day wear, of course you shouldn't skip out on SPF EVER but if you live in a sunnier country this is another pro for sure.

Longevity

The NARS Matte Skin Tint lasts for a decent amount of time on the skin, I get to at least 8 hours before my T-zone starts getting a little oily and that is without any other prep underneath. When I use a priming water (more specifically the Freedom one here, which I have been really enjoying btw) my base does look fresher for longer. I'm not the biggest fan of using a powder over the top when oil starts to seep through though.

NARS Matte Skin Tint in St Mortiz review and swatch vs NARS tinted moisturiser st moritz medium 1

St. Mortiz Matte Skin Tint VS Tinted Moisturiser

As you can see there is quite a shade difference between the Matte tint on the left, to the tinted moisturiser on the right. So if you already own the TM and you're planning on getting this, make sure you're aware of this and go down to the next shade if need be. Personally the NARS tinted moisturiser for me is best in the summer time and it is a shade or two deeper than my skin-tone which I like. However it's been quite nice getting a really close shade match from NARS, which is a little less on the yellow side too. As the TM is a little deep for me anyways, the matte tint matches very well and it works.

Round Up:

Rating: 7/10

Pros: It is a comfortable 'soft' matte base to wear, and has a good shade range which doesn't exclude women of colour. I also appreciate that contains SPF 30. The longevity is good and when I've prepped my skin correctly it lasts well and remains looking fresh on the face. You get a really good amount of product for your money and its a good base for combo/normal skintypes.

Cons: It does cling to dry patches and I find that it needs some extra prep to make it work really well.

Overall: Like I said at the start I have really enjoyed using this skin tint, though I would describe it as more of a matte medium coverage base, which isn't too harsh for dry skins and also sits well with oily skins. Really it is the ideal matte base for normal/combo skintypes, not so matte that it'll zap out any moisture but just matte enough for me anyway. It leaves a very subtle glow A.K.A a matte not flat finish to the skin and personally its a nice enough base for now and again. However it's not a base I'd reach for on a daily basis and I don't think I'll be quick to repurchase it either, simply because I do like that satin look to the skin! I think I'll get the most use out of this in the Autumn time, when I'll have longer days at my teacher training and I'll need to rely on a base that will last well. So we shall see how I feel about it in a few months! For now I'm glad to have this in my stash, but it hasn't replaced my love for the other NARS bases.

Have you tried this matte tint? What are your thoughts?

Haul | KIKO Sale!

kiko haul

Hello everyone, back again with another haul and this time its from KIKO! This is a combination of online and...much to my delight in store too because I finally have a local store yaaaaaaay. I love online shopping more than the average person, but theres just something ever so delightful about being able to swatch makeup products yourself, see the colours and feel the formulas y'know?! I could have spent another half an hour in the store, but my younger sister and little cousin were shooting me the most bored side eyes so I had to hurry it up a little bit haha. Right onto the haul (and be prepared for a large amount of khaki hehehe).

kiko soft light powder 02

One thing I like about the Kiko website is that they always seem to have something on sale when you go online. So I decided to purchase the Soft Light powder in 02 which was only £3.50, reduced from £11.90! This shade looked quite yellow and brightening from the few online photos I had found and thats always what I look for in a powder.  I was also drawn to the fact that it is a 'Mineral powder formulated with 90% ingredients of natural origin.' So far so good, its very soft on the skin and doesn't look cakey in the slightest. I've yet to use it under the eyes properly but I'll report back soon.

kiko rebel bouncy blush in velvety peach

Another product that I got for a bargain price is the Kiko rebel bouncy blush in 01 velvety peach, which only cost me £4.90 rather than the original £9.90 price. This blush is from the rebel romantic collection and I adore the packaging, it is in this cute little compact size with a great mirror and that rose gold packaging? YESSSS PLEASE. In terms of shade, as beautiful as it appears in the pan on my skintone it doesn't show up as strong as I had hoped. I was expecting more of a pink, the way it looks like in the pan, however its a light peachy colour and In order for a peach colour like this to look good on my skin, I have to layer it up quite a lot which does put me off a little. Despite this it looks stunning with a more dramatic eye so I will be keeping it in my collection as I don't have a lot of 'nude' blush shades.

kiko eyeshadow khaki 11, kiko water eyeshadow in 209 olive green, kiko intense colour long lasting eyeliner in 10

Moving on to the eyes, here you will see my love for khaki escalate, I was smitten with their vast collection of one of my favourite colours! Having said that, the Kiko eyeshadow in 116 pearly forest green £2.90 £1.40 did kind of disappoint me a little. It's one of the shadows I purchased in store because I adored the colour, however its too sheer when swatched or applied on the lids and for the colour to really show up well it takes a lot of packing on. I suppose its a nice enough shade for washing all over the lid with a bronzer all over the crease, and yes it is a bargain price but I just wish it would pack a bit more punch. The second eyeshadow I purchased is another of those beautiful water eyeshadow in 209 Olive Green £8.90 £4.40, which is from the same range as that famous 208 shadow which is a dupe for a lot of high end highlighters. The shade olive green is deeper and quite a lot more pigmented than the first eyeshadow, I've yet to use it wet but just used dry I am so smitten! Its a gorgeous shade and paired with a golden colour = a match made in heaven.

Moving on to the pencils in this haul, I purchased the Kiko intense colour long lasting eyeliner in 10 £5.20 £3.60 and I adore this formula when swatched. It is creamy, pigmented without any effort and glides on like a dream. Unfortunately the first time I used this in my waterline it didn't last a very long time, so the best way that I have found to wear this on my lower lashline, is to really smudge it rather than just line the waterline. It works so beautifully on the lid, especially as a more subtle winged liner so I'm very glad to have it in my stash. Also side note, not a fan of the 'smudger' on the other end at all. It doesn't do much and is too firm to use on the delicate undereye area.

I also purchased one more of the Kiko long lasting stick eyeshadows in 07 £6.90 £3.40, which was an online purchase. It is described as a golden beige, but I disagree with this. It's more of a silverish taupe shade and it has a very metallic like finish. I've yet to use this all over the lid, but I can't hep but be a little disappointed as I was hoping for more of a golden colour. At least it's a sale bargain though!

kiko eyebrow fibres coloured mascara in 05, kiko natural concealer in 06, kiko creamy lipliner in 303

And finally we have the miscellaneous items, with the first being the Kiko eyebrow fibres coloured mascara in 05 (which is only on sale for the lighter shades). I've only used this once and didn't notice any type of fibres, but I'm not passing judgement on this stuff yet. Kiko lipliners get a lot of hype and I do have a few in my collection, but I've just not been wowed by them. When I saw this gold range in store however, I was instantly drawn to it and before long I was swatching to my hearts content. I definitely feel like these have been inspired by the Charlotte Tilbury lipcheats and I am not complaining, look at that beautiful pencil! I purchased the creamy colour comfort lip liner in 303 £5.90. BEAUTIFUL, they aren't lying when they use the word creamy, it glides onto the lips and it super pigmented. My only criticism of this range is the lack of beautiful neutral shades. The only light ones were just too light, so please kiko expand the colours! Because of this I went for a shade I knew I was lacking, a brighter pink shade which adds a good amount of definition and brightening up!

Finally a bit of a risk the Kiko natural concealer in 06 £5.50, I went for this colour because in store it looked like a great orange corrector colour. I've used it a few times and I have to say I like it, though its a little deeper than I would have liked. BUT the formula is great, it's thin enough to handle concealer over the top, yet opaque enough to correct darkness. Again a report shall be coming your way in a few weeks.

kiko eyebrow fibres coloured mascara in 05, kiko natural concealer in 06, kiko creamy lipliner in 303

Swatches: lipliner 303, concealer 06, bouncy blush 01, stick eyeshadow 07, eyeshadow 116 heavily swatched, eyeliner in 10 and water shadow in 209.

And that concludes my Kiko haul! They do have a gorgeous golden collection out at the moment and theres a really great sale online too, with most of the items I picked up in this haul being in that sale!

Have you picked up anything from Kiko recently?

Requested | How to get a long-lasting DEWY base!

how to get a long lasting dewy base foundation

Hello lovely readers, I hope you're all doing well. Today's post is a requested one, I often get asked what the best long-lasting non-matte foundation is on the market. I personally love a dewy base, however it is well known that they just don't have the best lasting power in the world - but fear not! There are ways around this and whilst I'm quick to recommend the Dior Star Foundation as well as the MUFE Face and Body (although the shades in that line aren't the best for yellow toned/medium skintones) I also know they're not in everybody's price range. There are quite a few ways of getting a dewy base which lasts well on the skin, without having to spend a lot on a new foundation (though if you are in the market for one, the star foundation is a winner!). I'm sure you'll have some of these key ingredients  in your home already, so do read on if you're interested in creating a glowing base which lasts well on the skin.

how to get a long lasting dewy base foundation

1. A tiny drop of Oil

You may be confused when reading the first point, especially if you already have oily skin, but the key word here is 'tiny'. You only need a TINY drop of oil to mix in with your regular foundation, which will add a gorgeous glow to your face and it will not decrease the lasting power either. The best thing about this step is that you can take a thick, cakey foundation and transform it into the most beautiful and wearable base in your collection. For me the EX1 foundation is a little bit too thick, however when I add a tiny drop of rosehip seed oil OR sweet almond oil it glides onto the skin, doesn't highlight dry patches and looks absolutely radiant. I actually find that I get a similar effect with this step, as when I apply the NARS Radiant Tinted Moisturiser, which has become an absolute must have for me during the summer months. There is nothing worse that wearing makeup on a hot summers day and feeling a thick foundation melt off the face! So give this tip a try if you want a glowing, dewy base which'll stay in place (and credit for this totally goes to Wayne Goss video here).

how to get a long lasting dewy base foundation

2. Liquid Illuminators

Liquid illuminators were a real game changer for me, I currently own the Mememe beat the blues Oyster gold illuminator and the Becca shimmering skin perfector in Opal and I adore them both. The mememe is a thicker, and a very much golden shade of liquid highlight. Opal is a softer shade, which appears subtle yet can be built up and is super blendable. It melts into the skin and essentially creates the glow without enlarging any pores, drawing attention to texture on the skin or looking over the top. The best thing about liquid illuminators is how versatile they are, if the base I am using has a light coverage then I'll apply the illuminator straight onto moisturised skin and then the base over the top, creating a soft glowy look. If the base is of medium/full coverage I mix the liquid illuminator directly with the base and this creates a GORGEOUS soft focus dewy look, without impacting the formula of the foundation too much. So if you have a matte base that you love already, a little bit of liquid highlighter mixed in will give you a real glow. Of course you can also apply a liquid illuminator over the top of your foundation too, however I'd only recommend this if you're using a thinner formula such as the Becca ones, because the mememe and benefit ones can look a bit patchy over a matte formula especially. Another advantage of using a liquid illuminator over the top of foundation, is that it works very well as a base for any powder highlight you apply over the top = double the long lasting glow!

P.S Anyone else reaaaaally wanting to pick up the liquid version of champagne pop?! I'm so excited for it to release in the U.K!

3. Cream Highlighters

Similar to the liquid highlighters, creams will create a beautifully seamless glow on the skin and I find you can be a little more precise when using them over liquid formulas. Cream highlighters aren't quite as versatile as liquid highlighters though as you obviously can't mix them with your foundation, but I find I reach for them most when I'm using a satin/demi-matte base (for example the NARS Sheer Glow or the MUFE Ultra HD foundation). My two favourite cream highlighters are the KIKO Radiant Touch Creamy Stick Highlighter and the Topshop Glow Pots - particularly in the shade gleam. So like I said if you want to get a dewy look using a cream highlighter, you simply apply your regular foundation and then using your fingers or a duo fibre brush, you blend it into the skin! I definitely prefer using the warmth of my fingers to blend the highlighter in and what I love most about the cream formula is it doesn't accentuate any texture on the skin! They're also great for everyday, as much as I love champagne pop it is a little too much for the more formal settings such as teacher training days! On the days when I still want a subtle glow, cream highlighter are where its at ^_^

4. Setting + Finishing Sprays

The final step to ensuring your base is glowy AND long lasting is to use a good makeup setting spray! I have been loving the Pixi makeup fixing mist, which works well at keeping my makeup in place AND leaving a beautiful subtle glow. This intensifies the glow a little and if you want to go that extra step and ensure your highlight won't fade until you're ready to remove your makeup, then I recommend putting the highlighter on your brush, spritzing the brush with the mist from Pixi and THEN applying it on the skin. One word of warning though, I don't think I'd describe the nozzle as a spritz and it does apply quite a lot at a time, I don't mind this but if you want less of a spray hold it further back or spritz it onto your beautyblender and apply it that way instead. I also included the Mario Badescu Facial Spray (reviewed here), its not much of a setting spray but it is a step I rarely skip out in my makeup routine. This is because it moisturises the skin AFTER makeup (although having said that I usually spray it before hand too), it eliminates any powdery looking skin, intensifies the glow from highlighters and just makes the world of a difference. I also love the scent!

And there you have it! A tiny drop of oil, a little liquid illuminator or some cream highlight is all you need for a dewy base which lasts well on the skin. And then a spritz of setting or finishing spray too of course. Don't be afraid of using a little oil, I promise it has the potential to change your makeup game - Goss is RIGHT! Especially with those thicker bases that can look a little too much on the skin, even with a beautyblender.

Do you use any of these tips on a regular basis?

There are ways around this and whilst I'm quick to recommend the Dior Star Foundation as well as the MUFE Face and Body (although the shades in that line aren't the best for yellow toned/medium skintones) I also know they're not in everybody's price range. There are quite a few ways of getting a dewy base which lasts well on the skin, without having to spend a lot on a new foundation (though if you are in the market for one, the star foundation is a winner!). I'm sure you'll have some of these key ingredients  in your home already, so do read on if you're interested in creating a glowing base which lasts well on the skin.

LOTW | The Balm Meet Matt(e) Hughes Liquid Lipstick in Committed

The Balm Meet Matt(e) Hughes Liquid Lipstick in Committed review and swatch

Hello everyone! This will be my last lipstick of the week for a while, as I have quite a few colourpop LLS coming in the post, so will be testing those out and reviewing them in groups of four instead ^_^ Anyway this week I have worn The Balm's Committed for most of the days I've been wearing makeup and I really really like it. So much so that I included it in my May faves too.

Price: This liquid lipstick costs £13.50 which is the typical pricepoint for this brand, right in-between highstreet and highend. Although having said that, it's made more affordable because its available on ASOS and Feelunique, two sites which often have some sort of discount on.

Packaging: A simple plastic tube with a silver lid and a bit of cutesy The Balm image on the front! I like how easy it is to see the colour through the clear tube and theres not a lot to say about the packaging aside from that it's neat and functional. The doe-foot applicator is comfortable to use and I really like how it distributes just the right amount of product too.

Formula and Lasting time: The Balm's liquid lipstick line is awesome, the formula is very light weight and it lasts a looong time! With eating and drinking it has remained in place for 7 hours - pretty impressive seeing as I devoured a scrumptious GBK burger. By the 8.5 hour mark the colour had definitely faded but it still looked decent (don't you just love it when your lippie fades evenly ^_^). It feels kind of cooling on the lips as it dries down. The formula itself isn't very liquid like, it's more on the cream side of things. It does remind me ever so slightly of the Stila formula, however these are a lot less thick. They take longer to dry than your average liquid lipstick formula which is on the runny side, so it will transfer a little for the first 10/15 minutes after application.

Colour: Committed is a shade which seems to look different on different skintones. I first saw Lustrelux talk about it and on her it seemed quite mauvy, whereas it can come off quite peachy on warmer skintones. On me its a MLBB crossed with a peachy/pink shade too.  I'm not a big fan of pink, I prefer mauves and browns, however I do like committed! For me it's the perfect summer liquid lipstick, as it is that little bit brighter than my usual but I can also happily wear this alone. Although I do love to mix up all my lip choices haha, but this one is good to go alone too which is rare. Overall I would say that Committed is one of the most wearable shades for day-to-day and

Favourite way to wear it: Like I said, I do like wearing this alone with just a slightly deeper lipliner to define the lips a little. However I also have really enjoying mixing this with lighter liquid lipstick shades, specifically Colourpop's Clueless which as you can see swatched below is a cool toned nude pink shade. I don't know if you can see the mix as well as I had hoped, but hopefully you can see that committed and clueless create a gorgeous mix of mauve, nude and MLBB!

Overall: I really like this liquid lipstick, its comfortable to wear and easy to apply and go without much thought. I love how it doesn't feel thick on the lips, nor does it flake off. The price point is affordable and its pretty easily accessible here in the U.K - which is rare for a lot of the liquid lipstick brands! I don't think the shade range is the best, although they have come out with a couple of newer ones, but nothing has really caught my eye aside from this shade. To be honest I have more than enough liquid lipsticks in my collection at present, especially with my upcoming colourpop order than should be coming in next week EEEEK, so I'm in no rush to pick up anymore. However the formula definitely gets a thumbs up from me and if you're interested in trying liquid lipsticks but dread the thick, flaky formulas - this line is for you!

Rating: 9/10 - knocking off one point because sometimes I have to apply two layers to get an even coat, I don't know if its because the shade isn't too far off my natural lip colour, or if its just the formula? Anyways, not a biggie but worth noting.

Repurchase? Yes I would repurchase committed, like I said it's rare to find a shade which I can pull off alone without a bunch of other products and this works so well for every single day ^_^

Have you tried The Balm's liquid lipstick line?

Colourpop Haul Part One | Update on Getting Colourpop To The U.K

how to get colourpop to the U.K, ship colourpop to the U.K

Hello lovely people, this is a very exciting post for me to be writing, because it is an update to the most read post on my blog so far 'how I got colourpop to the U.K'. After a year, I decided it was time to place another order and over the past 12 months I have been building up quite an extensive list of products I wanted to try out. I was absolutely thrilled when colourpop had a flash 20% off sale, saving money on a brand I had SOO much I wanted to try from? YES PLEASE! However I am going to be brutally honest, they were extremely unprepared for their flash sale and the website crashed multiple times. Eventually they decided to use a queue system, where you had to 'wait in line'  and you could see all the tens of thousands of people ahead of you waiting. Everyone was assigned a place in line and an approximate wait time, for me it was 40 minutes, so I continued working on my essay whilst keeping the tab open. Once you were on the site you got 15 minutes to add whatever you wanted to the basket and then you had to check out. It was HECTIC! But as they extended the sale to the next day due to a lot of upset on twitter, I managed to place a second order asking my friends if they wanted to order anything through me.

Although this haul is called part 1, it's actually the second order I placed a couple of hours later, because for some reason they worked backwards with their orders when processing them. Some of these items aren't mine, they're either gifts or ordered products for other people. I'm going to be talking you through each step of the ordering process through using a forwarding service. I will also be writing out the prices to let you know how much it costs and if its worth ordering through a forwarding company spoiler alert...it is!

The ordering process

The first step when ordering from Colourpop is to create an account with Shipito, which is the forwarding service I used. Last year I used borderlinx (post here) but it was far too expensive for the amount of products I ordered. When I calculated the cost of each item using borderlinx, including the delivery, customs etc. each product cost me around £6.43...which is still cheaper than what U.K sellers are charging, but for the amount of items I want to try, it wasn't good value for money. When I read Jasmine's post (here) on how she forwarded colourpop to the U.K, I decided to give it a go. The reviews for shipito are very intimidating, so many people seem to have problems with the service, which is why Jasmine was reluctant to recommend the site and I want to stress the same thing. It is a bit of a risk, however there are precautions you can take (such as insurance) which makes the whole thing a bit easier!

So once you have signed up (entering the details as shown above) you're given two different addresses within the U.S and one for Austria. These are essentially warehouses where your package is sent too. I didn't have time to check out the difference between the two U.S addresses, but now I know that the one based in California is better for short term storage and the delivery will be quicker - which is worth noting if you're planning on being away and need your package to reach you that little bit quicker. Something very significant at this point, is that you will need a U.S phone number to order from colourpop - I wasn't aware of this (as last year I don't think I did??) but luckily the process of getting one was quick and easy.

You just have to download an app which provides you with a free number, I went for 'whistle phone' - free and allows you to pick an area code too. I was quite apprehensive to use this but there was no need to worry as it is VERY simple to use.

how to get colourpop to the U.K, ship colourpop to the U.K shipito

You then simply go onto the colourpop site, add the products you want to your basket and check out as a guest. When entering your details, you choose between one of the addresses you are given and type it in. Then you input the phone number you're given from the app, and you have all the tools you need to get through the checkout process with no issues! You proceed to pay through paypal and you'll get a couple of emails over the next few days.

Colourpop will email you about your order, they will then email you when you have dispatched the order (which usually takes one week, BUT due to the sale it took THREE weeks for my second order to be dispatched and FOUR-FIVE weeks for my first order 😧). When it arrives at the Shipito warehouse, they will email you with a customs declaration form, and you have to fill it out with all the details. What each item is, the name and the price. You then have to declare if it is a gift or for merchandise purposes, of course go with gift unless you're planning on selling them all on. You submit it off, they review it within a day or two and then you are provided with delivery options. You can choose to have it shipped to you within 4 days which costs around $40. The cheapest option is Airmail although it is also the slowest.

Despite the time it would take, I went for airmail and decided it was essential to spend the $5.57 on full insurance. This way if the package went missing I would get every single penny back. I also asked them to send me a photo of the contents of the package (something I won't be doing next time but I just had to be sure). This cost me an extra $2, so all in all insurance and postage cost me $24.69 = £16.81. Pretty reasonable, especially in comparison to borderlinx!! It took two days in total from it arriving into the warehouse to it being sent off to the U.K, and then I had to wait a total of two weeks and two days before it arrived. I was expecting a pretty substantial customs fee and I'd worked out that it would be around £18-£24. To my absolute delight however, it came to my home with not a customs note in sight! So despite the long wait time (which really was due to colourpop's lack of preparation for the sale and amount of orders), in total it cost me around £17 and just over two weeks to get my order which contained 19 items. I'm pretty happy with that and even if I had to pay customs with my next order, it would still be a lot cheaper than going through borderlinx again.

Now I will talk you through how much money I saved by using a forwarding service, instead of purchasing from U.K sellers. I just want to make it clear that I have nothing again U.K sellers, however I would only recommend purchasing from them if you just wish to pick up one or two items. If however you want more, I promise you using a forwarding service will save you a HUGE amount of money! Despite the fact that I got these items on a 20% off sale, the savings are still considerable sale or not. Just to be clear I'll be writing the sale price in orange, original price in blue and the U.K seller price written along side it too. By the way, I've used one UK site to copy and compare their prices, however they are all very similar.

  • 12 Liquid Lipsticks - $57.60 = £39.84  -  $72.00 = £49.80  To buy them in the UK = £119.88
  • 4 Lippie Stix            - $16.00 = £11.07  -  $20.00 = £13.83  To buy them in the UK = £35.96
  • 3 Eyeshadows          - $12.00 = £8.30  -  $15.00 = £10.37   To buy them in the UK = £26.97

  • My Order Total:  $85.60 = £59.20 + £16.81 shipping = £76 in total.
  • Non sale it would have cost: $107 = £74.00 + 16.81 = £90.81
  • To buy each of these items in the UK it would have cost me: £182.81
I hope this all makes sense, I didn't envisage having so many equals signs in this post ._. but basically I managed to save a huge £106 by using this forwarding method! If the items had not been on sale, I still would have saved £92 (this is including shipping too!), so now you know why I strongly recommend you purchase a large order of colourpop using a forwarding service!!

Last time using borderlinx I calculated that including shipping, each item cost me around £6.43. This time each item has cost me on average: £4, which is basically the U.S price that they sell it for! Please do let me know below if you have any questions, I hope I've gone into enough detail but still in case I have missed anything drop me a comment.

Pros of using Shipito:
  1. You save a TONNE of money!
  2. There is a wider range of choice as you are ordering from colourpop yourself, rather than having to pick from limited supplies that a U.K seller has instock.
  3. If you really want your order quickly, you have the option of paying more and getting express shipping too.
Cons of using Shipito:
  1. If you choose the cheapest delivery (airmail) you'll have to wait at least 2weeks-1 month from placing your order to it getting to your door and the lack of tracking is frustrating.

Right I think 23935794594 words later, I am done with that part! Now on to the haul. I just thought I'd mention here that as this was my second order, none of these things were at the top of my list of things I REALLY wanted to try if that makes sense - because I had already managed to pick them up in my first order. Then a couple of hours when the queue time had reduced, I got rather impulsive and decided to make another order, quickly asking my friends if they wanted anything too. So these items are just the start of a very exciting haul ^_^

As I mentioned in my last post, I have an on/off opinion about the colourpop shadows. I decided that I wouldn't be buying any shadows unless they were great for adding extra pizzaz to an eyeshadow look (eg. glittery and pigment like) OR they would have to be a unique enough matte shade. The three I picked up are (clockwise):

Cornelius: is one of the shades created by Kathleen and I love it! Its a beautiful brown shade which looks amazing in the crease. Its actually a hair or two shades deeper than Makeup Geek's creme brulee (probably why I'm such a big fan of this shade already) and one or two swishes of this in the crease makes any eyeshadow look appear that much better.

So Quiche: is a khaki based shadow with a tonne of glitter/shimmer. The shimmer is a little silver but more pink when swatched and if you swipe a little on the lid using a brush you'll get more glitter than colour. However if you want more of the khaki shade to come through - use the fingers. I love applying these types of shades with my finger, literally packing it on where I want an eyeshadow look to be that extra bit special and it works like a charm!

Nillionaire: Is the shade I was most excited for, it has a brown base and it even more sparkly than So Quiche. These shimmers are more silver though, which makes it a little more versatile. If you want to spruce up a smoky eye, this is the shade you need! I'm sure I'll be whipping this out every time a special occasion rolls out, theres nothing like some glitter to add some pop!

colourpop cami swatch, brink, aquarius

I also had to pick up a couple of lippie stix too because I love the formula and they're incredible value for money! The first on the left is Cami, which is from their new 'matte X' formula and I love the colour so so much. It's a deep flattering very autumn/winter type of shade and the formula is super comfortable, without losing the matteness either. This is extremely beautiful for olive skintoned ladies, I've only worn it once but I adore it. It's not transfer proof but it doesn't smudge and it lasts very very well. I then purchased a back up of Brink (reviewed here), this swatch hasn't translated the colour very well though ._. but I'm very happy to have another in my collection. And the third and final shade I picked up is 'Aquarius', which is yet another collaboration shade with Kathleen Lights (can you tell I'm a fan? 😝). It is much more nude and not a matte nor a satin finish, rather it is 'creme' finish. I've yet to try this out, but I shall be updating you soon!

colourpop liquid lipstick clueless, solow, are n b, bad habit, more better, limbo

And finally the 6 liquid lipsticks I ordered! I picked up the shades:

Clueless: Definitely one of my favourite colours from the 6 I picked up in this haul, it is a cool toned nude shade but more wearable than Stila's baci (reviewed here). I like to apply a deeper lip liner around this shade, as its still a little light for me but it's the most wearable nude shade in a liquid lipstick formula that I have found so far. It also does remind me of the Kylie lipkit in the shade kandy k...I won't get into how I feel about her lipkits but let me just recommend you to watch this video and make your own mind up D:

Solow: A coral shade which doesn't look as bad as I had anticipated! However its still a little too light/bright against my warm skintone to use alone, so since getting it I have been using it in the centre of the lips with other shades and this has been working a treat. When I did apply this alone, I wasn't so keen on the formula of this shade in particular, it accentuated dry cracked lips more than the others. So for me this shade is only useful as a lightener, to be mixed with others.

Are N Be: This shade was definitely a risk for me as its pretty dark! Now if you check out the lip swatch on their site, I have to say the colour in person doesn't translate similarly at all. It doesn't have any of the pinky tones and it pulls out much more purple on me. However despite this, I really really like this shade. Its a deep and rather dull purple, which doesn't look gothic against my olive skintone. Lets be honest, I won't be getting a tonne of use out of this shade but I can definitely see myself using it in the colder months.

Bad habit: Colourpop describe this as a dusty mauve pink, however I would say its more of a toned down deeper magenta shade and I think its gorgeous! Bad habit is a great shade for warm skintones, it's slightly more muted than the next shade and I'll be using this throughout the summer and its the type of colour that can be worn with minimal makeup - it just pulls the whole face together! The formula of this is smooth and doesn't feel as drying as solow.

More Better: This is the more vibrant, out there sister to bad habit! Colourpop describe this as a 'deep violet wine' and I think it's perfect for medium/dark skintones as it compliments deeper skintones beautifully (but if you google it, you'll see that every single skintone rocks this shade). for some reason the swatch below is more red toned ._. but anyways... its not one I'd wear day to day, its a little too dramatic, but I'll be saving it for evenings and special occasions.

Limbo: The dupe for 'true brown k', this was a shade I really got on a whim because I was sure I wouldn't like it....well I was wrong, this is a surprisingly flattering colour! Again its a shade I won't get a bunch of use out of (which is technically going against my lessons learnt from za 7 month spending ban tut tut) but there was no way I was spending $30 on a shade from KJ, when I could give this a go on the whim from Colourpop...justifiable right??

And that is the end of my colourpop haul part 1. I really hope it was helpful to you if you were looking for a way to get a bunch of colourpop stuff for an affordable price - the key thing if you choose to use shipito is 1.Insurance is worth it 2. Patience is KEY. Totally worth the wait though and I am so excited for my first order to arrive next week (hopefully!).

Have you tried anything from Colourpop?
