Lumea Update #3

philips lumea update review

Well, it's been quite a long time since I've posted one of these up hasn't it! If you have no idea what this post is about to be about, check out number one and number two. It's focusing on the Philips Lumea which is an IPL device, designed to slow down hair growth. I won't go too much into the details of what it is, but if you're curious check out the links above.

Last time I wrote one of these was post 3 treatments and I really did have the intention to type up another update after 6 treatments and let you know how it was going. However as each treatment took a good fortnight in-between, it was almost inevitable that I would become too busy to keep it up throughout the busiest months of my degree! I so wish I had forced myself to take out the time, but unfortunately when one is THAT stressed out, zapping an IPL machine for a good 1.5-2 hours is not a priority. I did then restart but I had about a months break. The good thing about the break was I could see how much it had really worked and that's what I'm going to be talking about here.

After 4-5 sessions, how much hair stopped growing?

The biggest thing I noticed in terms of results was that hair really has SLOWED DOWN in growth and that is true for all area I have been treating. Bald patches, where hair has stopped growing altogether have been more of a mixed bag and this is due to the intensity of 'zapping' I choose to do. If you read my first post you'd understand what I mean, that you can choose how strong you want the zap to be, but it is based on your skin-tone. It's not necessarily about how high of a pain tollerance you have (although yes level 5 is the hottest ping about the skin and can feel a little uncomfortable for sure. Though it is worth the faster results if you are in the safe zone depending on your skintone).

Under-arms: This is the area I have noticed the most impressive results in terms of hair regrowth time which is AMAZING! Hair grows back thinner and much much slower, meaning upkeep of hair removal is much quicker. However in terms of bald patches, only 15% of the area is hair-free so far. Still I'm more than happy with the treatment of my underarms so far because it was just one of those annoying areas that I wished I could ignore like leg hair y'know?

B-L: Y'all know what I mean, we're all sisters here haha although it does make me cringe writing the full thing out on my blog, so B-L shall have to do. Anyways again I'm really happy with the speed of hair regrowth after 4-5 fortnightly sessions. MUCH MUCH MUCH slower and a lot less thicker. Probably about 20% of the hair has been removed for good and again I'm really pleased with these results.

Thighs: This area much like the one above is more sensitive, so I do have to hold my breath a little and try to get it over and done with. Hair has been slower to regrow but its been one of the worst areas for ingrown hairs which is no fun. I'd say approximately 25% of my hair on this area has stopped growing back. I wish it was more but I can definitely blame the fact that I use a lower setting because of the size of the area - in my last treatment I did grit my teeth and step it up to a level 5 though, so hopefully this'll show results!

Shins: One of the most noticeable areas in terms of results, hair regrowth is very patchy and slow, with about 40% of the hair not growing back! The downside though is that my shins are the WORST area when it comes to sensitivity with shaving and I literally have scars on my legs from when I've scratched them because they've become that dry and itchy. I definitely need to use Aloe Vera gel for more than a day after shaving to try and combat that, because I almost don't notice how much I'm scratching my legs up, until half an hour later when they start stinging really badly. Thats a major downside about this whole process for me, as the pain is almost not worth the 40%...almost!

Arms: Finally the area where I have seen the biggest improvement in terms of bald patches and lack of hair regrowth altogether, the arms! This is definitely because my arms are the least sensitive area to hair remove from and I have always used intensity 5, hence the best results. Hair regrowth is very patchy and thin and barely noticeable.

Facial Hair: This is a bit of a funny one, because there is not really any patchiness in my upper lip hair. However the hair is thinner and less noticeable, so now I can go three weeks without touching my upper lip and you can hardly tell. What also makes me really happy is that the horrible green tinge that asian girls can sometimes get when the upper lip hair has grown quite a bit is hardly noticeable now! In terms of side burns, slight patchiness noticed and again hair has slowed down.

philips lumea update reviewGeneral Usage Tips:

- Start with the sensitive areas first (face, b-l, thighs) because the longer you use this, the hotter the Lumea becomes.
- If you have sensitive skin like mine, which hates shaving make sure you're exfoliating before AND after and apply Aloe Vera gel to the legs after they're dry.
- Ingrown hairs can be treated easily with the stuff I reviewed in my second update (here), love and heavily rely on this because ingrowns are the worst.
- Like I said in my last post, if you're treating a lot of your body hair like I am, it is easier to split up areas between two days. However if you don't have time to do this and just want to spend sunday evening zapping away, make yourself a youtube playlist of videos you want to catchup on or put something on netflix, because it can take quite a while to get through larger areas like the legs!

I plan on using the lumea fortnightly for another 4-6 times (I've already used it twice and kept up with the dates). The reason I'm doing this is because last time I was unable to finish recommended treatment time and I want to see if this'll really weaken the hair more than the results I have seen already.

I am overall really happy with this purchase, it does what it says on the box and slows down hair regrowth. So if you buy it with this in mind and don't expect hair to stop growing back completely then I think you'll really like it. If you have very very thick body hair and you're sick of spending so much time removing it, this will cut your hair removal time in half and there will be patches where hair doesn't grow back full stop! Right now it is available for £250 here and I think thats a bargain of a price compared to the original £400.

Would I repurchase? Yes, because it has made life that little bit easier and in all honestly there is not one method that truly removes hair permanently - even salon laser hair removal which costs hundreds per treatment, requires touch up treatments for it to last. So using a device from the comfort of my own home, that's slowed it down is awesome! Plus after the initial fortnightly treatments, you only need to use it once a month which is much more manageable. I hope this post was helpful to those of you who have been requesting an update, let me know if you have any questions!

How do you deal with hair removal? Or do you just not deal with it at all haha, I'd love to hear your thoughts ^_^

Well, it's been quite a long time since I've posted one of these up hasn't it! If you have no idea what this post is about to be about, check out number one and number two. Lumea Update | Post 3 Treatments

Hello everybody! I know this post has been highly anticipated by those of you who were curious about the Philips Lumea, however if you missed my original post and have no idea about what I'm talking about, I'd recommend you click here before continuing! Also if you don't have a lot of time and simply want to know 'So far do you recommend this?' my answer is YES. YES I DO.
But do read on for my full experience thus far!

Firstly I HATE SHAVING
I cannot express in words, numbers, or graphs the extent of how much I HATE shaving. My skin despises it, I come out with rashes, bumps and itchiness. This itchiness means I scratch and scratch till I have cuts on my arms and legs *high pitched scream*

Now although they say you can wax, epilate etc, this technically doesn't work because the initial phase means you're supposed to be zapping every two weeks (for 4-5 sessions) and as hair growth IS slowed down, by pulling hair out from the root, I feel this could impact the treatment. I hope that makes sense! Because of this I opted to shave on all areas of treatment, I purchased two different types of razors which I'll discuss below, but that is the first thing I wanted to make clear to you all: you do have to shave and you kinda have to grit your teeth and bare it during the initial phase D:

What has made the shaving process easier
Having said that, I have discovered a wonder product and if any of you also suffer from razor burns and in-grown hairs, you really need to get a bottle of this in your life. It's the Skin Doctors ingrow go (link) which works incredibly well if used consistently. The only downside to this product is the very strong smell, however the results it gives are well worth it to me. I shave my skin, use the lumea and then after a couple of hours I apply the lotion using a cotton pad, over any bumps or ingrowns in the evening. Although it's called a lotion, it's very much a liquid just a heads up. I then follow up the area in the morning, unless I'm heading straight out because like I mentioned, the smell be strong. One thing to note is this product works as an exfoliator, due to the AHAs. However you're supposed to avoid AHAs  whilst using the Lumea because both AHAs and the laser light from the Lumea cause skin to become more sensitive to the sun. I don't show my arms and legs anyways, so I use it liberally over these areas, however I do not use this on my face at all. To be on the safe side and not over-sensitise my skin, I only apply this twice a day, for 3-4 days after shaving and then my skin gets over a weeks break, before I use the IPL again. I hope this is enough protection, it seems to be working well and it really does clear up redness, irritation and ingrowns faster than any other natural method I tried! I think I probably would have stopped the whole shaving process by now, had I have not found this stuff, it's amaaaazing!

Splitting up the treatment
I'm using the lumea pretty much all over the areas that I want to reduce hair growth, and hopefully have at least 60-70% gone for good. Remember NO hair removal method will keep you hair free permanently, even salon laser hair removal will still requite touchups.  So I have split it up over two days, every other Tuesday I do face and arms and every other Thursday I do under arms and legs. To be honest I wish I had started off doing underarms on a Tuesday too since they're quite a small area. I have long legs and I definitely don't have a thigh gap lol! So my legs take a while, I usually start my YouTube playlist and I'll have watched about an hour and a bit of videos by the time I've finished. I also have to ensure it's been fully charged before starting my legs, or I have to take a break and pop it on charge which is kind of frustrating.

Also I picked up a couple of these eyebrow razors from Ebay, this is the only type of razor I'd ever recommend using on the face ALTHOUGH, these ones in particular are not the best. It takes a while to get used to them and a couple more strokes on the same spot, compared to a razor which is slightly sharper. You get a lot in the pack and it's quick enough to wiz this around finer facial hair. I bought this packfor two quid.

So...On the the actual results so far
I'm technically half way through my treatment, or just over half anyway, as they suggest 4-5 fortnightly treatments are what makes up the initial treatment.

After the first treatment + regrowth:
Pretty much nothing, the hair regrew and didn't fall out which is exactly what I expected.

After the second treatment + regrowth:
The first place I noticed the lumea working was on my arms, after I got used to the feeling of hair growing back stubbly, I saw little bald patches in-between the hair that regrew! It was quite funny actually, the patches were only about 7mm if that but there was definitely baldness on my arms. This was a week after the second treatment. In other areas I didn't notice bald patches, however by this point hair regrowth has definitely slowed down, especially considering I was shaving and not taking hair out by the root. My skin also seemed to get used to the shaving process and it's become less painful (still not ideal) but do-able.

After the third treatment + regrowth:
Again hair regrowth has been a lot slower and I noticed tiny tiny bald patches on all areas that I'm using the lumea on. However my arms and legs have bigger bald patches because firstly I use the larger attachment and secondly I've started using level 4-5 on those areas so the intensity is definitely making a difference. Of course with level five there is a stronger sensation, not exactly pain but more like an 'oof!' at each zap and then it's over. The funniest thing for me was noticing stripes of hair on my thighs, where clearly I had not gone over with the laser two weeks previously. This is why they say you should use a white pencil, but like I said my legs are just too big/long for me to bother with that. Instead of using a pencil, I'll be more vigilant with covering the whole area. But at least seeing the clear distinction showed me that it was actually working. I wish I had seen more of an improvement on my arms, I'd say about 30% of my areas were hair free before shaving for the fourth time. Finger's crossed I'll see more of a difference from this point onwards! The same with my underarms, very tiny amount of bald patches but definitely slower regrowth which is encouraging for sure. As for my face I've only really seen a difference in the last two weeks, because the facial attachment does have an extra filter for the protection so the impact is slower. On my upper lip, 50% of the hair is no longer growing back and sideburns 30%.

So just to round up my thoughts thusfar, I'm glad to see how slow hair regrowth has become and the bald patches are really (weirdly) exciting haha! I'll do another update after my fifth treatment, I did my fourth this week, so you can expect to see that on the second week of June! I'm hoping to see more rapid changes in the next couple of weeks, mainly because of how many times I'll have repeated the treatment. However if I don't see more of a change in the next two weeks, I'll probably continue using the lumea every week for a month because I've read that for some people weekly initial treatments work more effectively than fortnightly. We shall see.

I asked you guys on IG if you had any questions, so I shall answer those now:

1. Did you have any breakouts with it?

No thank-goodness I didn't have any breakouts! I always use it on no-makeup days or in the evening so my skin can breathe on my face. I also don't apply a lot of products on straight after because I feel like my skin is more sensitive so I let it rest. I should mention here that two people said they did break out after using this - everyone's skin is different and it's important to be aware of this, although before purchasing it I read numerous reviews and I didn't see anyone else saying they'd experienced breakouts (I think that would have put me off!). Regardless I did want to mention it here as if you have severely sensitive skin, keep this in mind.

2. Does it change the colour of your face?

It hasn't changed the colour of my face itself but I feel like removing the hair on my upper lip and sideburns has meant my face looks more even in tone. This is because the colour of skin, with a light layer of dark hair over it, does look darker and sometimes it can even look a little green which is horrid (especially on the upper lip). So it's been really nice to have a more even complexion! That's one of the main reasons why this whole shaving of the face trend started but I feel much better knowing that I'm using IPL over the area, rather than just letting it grow back stubbly (because trust me, hair on the side burn areas WILL defo grow back prickly on the face if shaved).

3. Do you have to shave the sides of your face?

Yes but only if you want to treat that area! Trust me it's not as scary as it sounds, plus there are tonnes of tutorials on how to do it with the same razor I recommend.

4. how long before you see the difference in hair growth?

You see hair growth slowing down within two treatments...well I did anyways! I think the recommended treatment phase generally works for most people, but you can of course adjust it to your own results/body...but do remember the lumea isn't designed to get rid of hair 100%.

5. Did it burn your skin or cause any scarring/hyper-pigmentation?

It doesn't burn the skin, however on the third time I used it on a level 5 on my face and my skin was red and sore for a couple of hours after that. I could also really feel the effect of the laser on my face, so I've decided to stick to the level 4 from now onwards! Nope, no hyper pigmentation - if anything my skin looks clearer and feels a whole lot smoother in that area.

6. Has it changed the condition of your skin? Have you noticed reduction in hair. Has your hair grown back since?

The condition of my skin is the same, it just feels smoother but I think that's more to do with the hair removal than the actual IPL (although using the IPL obviously means the hair growth will be slowed down and reduced). Yes the reduction of hair has been slow but steady so far and yes hair has to grow back, but then it falls out naturally. This is how it works, until the majority of the hair has fallen out.

7. Have you noticed any sensitivity on your skin? Would you recommend it for spot prone skin? Does it completely illuminate hair growth or reduce the speed of growth?

My skin is only sensitive straight after and for the next hour or so. I still wouldn't recommend zapping before applying makeup though. Spot prone skin should be fine, just ensure you're always using the face window not the body window and start on a lower setting. It's purpose is to reduce hair growth and the way it works is it majorly slows it down, so you have the initial treatments every other week and then once a month you just go over the areas and the majority of hair should be removed. I've read people ahve gotten rid of between 60-90% of hair for the most part and there's really no way of telling what percentage of hair it will rid for me or you, but as I said in my first post, if a large percentage of my body hair stops growing for the price of this I'll be happy!

Thanks for reading such a long post everyone! If you have any other questions feel free to leave them in the comments and I'll address them soon/in the next update.

Philips Lumea Prestige SC2007/00 | What, Why, How? | #1

Philips Lumea Prestige SC2007/00 first review first impressions

Hello everybody! I'M super excited to write this post, because the decision to purchase the Philips Lumea Prestige SC2007/00 has been one that I have ummed and ahhed over for at least a year. Three days ago I bit the bullet, went in halves with mum and purchased the little device. It arrived today (Easter Sunday) which I was very happy about, talk about speedy on a national holiday!! So I decided to write a post explaining what it is, what I hope to achieve with it, why I went for this model in particular and also first impressions too. I plan to write multiple updates and let you know how we get on with this, as often as I can and I hope these posts will be useful for anyone who's been thinking about investing in one too.

Hair Removal and I
So it's important to start this blog post off with a disclaimer - I am a South Asian female, therefore body hair is something I have learned to just deal with. Us brown girls grow so much hair it's a little overwhelming when you hit puberty and start wondering how best to deal with it! Of course when I was a teen I was mortified, my skin is a light brown shade and my hair is dark so it was pretty visible. As I've gotten older I've definitely developed more of an ehhh attitude towards hair on my body, because I'm not a fan of shaving it grows back too quick and feels prickly, at home waxing is too time consuming and going to a salon? Girl I am on a student budget, I'd much rather be slightly furry arms and highlight on point, than have smooth arms ya feel me?? The primary method of hair removal I use is an epilator - except it frequently gives me ingrown hairs, causes my skin to be sensitive and is honestly more pain than it's worth as it rarely catches the majority of hair. Despite the attitude of I CANNOT BE BOTHERED, that had developed by the age of 20, I don't particular enjoy letting all the hair grow out, I just have more important things to care about...like third year assignments and what I'm going to do post University.

So that brings us to the last year and a half, when I have seriously been thinking about more permanent forms of hair removal. Hair removal on the regular can get expensive, can be painful, can take forever, can be uncomfortable and I just had enough of the regular process, which lead to the decision to purchase this IPL!

Laser Hair Removal At A Salon or IPL At Home?
The idea of going into a clinic serval times to get professional laser hair removal done did not phase me, I mean I'm not the most comfortable person with a stranger zapping me, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do right? Laser hair removal at a salon is basically the use of a very strong laser, at least 6-8 times (over the period of a few weeks I believe) on an area of the skin, to permanently remove the hair. It is expensive, there is no doubt about it, with a full body laser course costing at least £1.6K+. Of course you don't pay it all upfront, you pay per session and the advantages of going into a salon are firstly, there is a professional who knows what they are doing and have experience and secondly the strength of the laser means you are more LIKELY to have your hair removed permanently and for a longer amount of time.  I really was considering saving up money and getting laser done, at least on my upper lip and side burns to begin with, but after tweeting about it I found out that apparently when some women get pregnant, the hair all grows back! Hearing this totally stopped me in my tracks, of course one day I would like to have children i'a and I just don't think I could risk spending so much money on a treatment which could be reversed due to hormonal changes. So I decided to spend a couple of weeks doing as much research as I could into the lumea, which my auntie has been using for over a year now.  Her feedback was one of the reasons I gave this a shot and also the fact that it's currently on sale on Amazon from £300- £269.95 and the same price on John Lewis too!

What is IPL?
It stands for 'Intense Pulsed Light' therapy and it is one of the most effective methods to 'continuously prevent hair growth'. The pulses/flashes of light are applied to the skin and absorbed by the hair root. This will stimulate the hair follicle to go into a resting phase and prevent hair growth. To Philip's credit, at no point do they claim that this will permanently rid you of hair forever and after reading as many reviews as I could, I have concluded that this device will probably remove 60-80% of my body hair if I stick to it! This amount sounds amazing to me, I am not fussy if I have a little bit of hair regrowth here and there - the fact that a large portion of my hair could be banished for good sounds almost too good to be true! I didn't know this, but apparently hair grows in cycles and of course not every single hair on the body is growing in the same cycle, which is the reason why it takes several repeated regular treatments to get long term results.

Who can use the Lumea?
This is an important one, fair to dark skintones can use this safely, however very deep skintones cannot. It works on dark hair only - not white, red or blonde. This is to do with how well the light picks up the dark pigment of the hair. Pregnant or breastfeeding ladies, those with skin canceer, areas of excema, burns, wounds, diabetes, lupus erythematodes, porphyria, congestive heart disease and anyone with a history of immunosuppressive diseases (including HIV or AIDS). Also if you are on Accutane or have used it in the last six months, you can't use it AND if you're using skincare products containing AHAs or BHAs you should avoid those areas. (No more liquid gold for me for a while). Finally if you tan from sunbeds or creams you can't use it until its all faded, something I wish I had known before, because my face is still half tanned from the Bareminerals faux face tan ._.

This list should be written clearly online, because I can imagine a lot of people buying this and then being unable to use it!

How does it work?
According to Philip's instructions you must first remove the hairs on the surface of the skin. A lot of people think you have to shave, I did too, however you can use an epilator, short-trim or even wax before using this! But more on that later. You cannot use hair removal cream though, as the chemicals in cream mixed with the light could cause a skin reaction. Once your skin is hair free, you select the correct light intensity according to the table above. Now based on this table I'm light brown so I should be using 4/5...but of course I'm starting with 2/3! Once you've selected the intensity, you press it down on the skin and when it's ready, a green light on the back turns on, at which point you press the button and zap. At this point there is a bright flash of red light and there is most definitely a sensation. Not exactly pain, but it's like a quick zap of heat, gone as quick as it comes but nonetheless still enough to make my mum flinch at each zap!

Philips Lumea Prestige SC2007/00 first review first impressions

The Philip's guide comes with a recommended treatment schedule. There are two phases, the first being the initial one in which you are supposed to use the Philips Lumea once every two weeks for the first 4-5 weeks. After each of these treatments hair will grow back and fall out, as the weeks go on, most of the hair will permanently stop growing. The second phase is called the touch-up one, which is recommended every 4-8 weeks. Its the part of the treatment which targets the small percentage of hair which hasn't stopped growing and as far as I know, these touchups are essential to keep skin smooth all the time.

So to break this down, you need to go through 8 weeks of regular shaving and zapping on a fortnightly basis (essentially 4-5 sessions) to get the majority of the hair permanently removed. The touchups keep it this way but it is not really essential to keep it up, as far as I can tell...although I guess time will tell!

I read a review on Amazon in which this lady stated that she didn't notice a difference by following the recommended schedule. So she decided to use it once a week on a notch higher than she had been, and within 8 weeks she had absolutely zero hair left on the areas she treated. Therefore I will be keeping an eye on my treatment and adjusting it based on how it's going.

Which Model is the best?
The way Philips have numbered their models is quite confusing, because although they seem to go up in consecutive order it is not necessarily a case of the higher the number the better the model. I bought the 2007 model because it contains 250,000 flashes before it is exhausted, which means that for two people it should last approximately 4 years. The 2008 model has a third attachment for the bikini line but only has 140,000 flashes...and you can easily use the face attachment on this model for the bikini line (with regular cleaning of course). So don't rush into buying the latest model, make sure you take you time and read into the differences. Personally this one is the best in my opinion, it has all the attachments you really need and a long life too which makes it better value for money. All philips lumeas are brilliant for the fact that they don't need replacement parts and the latest versions are all cordless.

First Impressions
I started off with using this one both arms, I actually shaved them, which was bizarre and something I am not used to at all but it was nice to have smooth arms for a good 7 hours, before they started feeling prickly and uncomfortable *eye rolls*. Anyway, I turned on the lumea and put it onto level 1. The process of pushing it onto the skin and the green light switching on was super quick and simple and it didn't feel uncomfortable at all. As soon as it zapped and the flash came on, there was the slightest outline of the window, which was helpful because straight afterwards I moved it down a little and flashed again. I cranked up the intensity to a 3 and it was pretty quick and easy to zap my forearm in a couple of minutes. I used a taupe coloured eyeliner to draw lines over my arms, marking out which areas I've done. I'll definitely be using a nude pencil next time though! In terms of covering all my arm, it did take a little manouvering sometimes horizontal was good, other times vertical was good.  It wasn't too hard, but it did take a little bit of patience. All in all my first experience was good, there were pings of heat and it does take a little getting used to but it's over before you really think about it AND it's less painful than using my epilator too. In fact I wouldn't call it painful, just a tiny bit uncomfortable, but definitely bearable. Plus the knowledge that with dedication and patience, in a couple of weeks the hair will be gone for the most part is super motivating.

This morning I shaved my upperlip using an eyebrow razor (horrific to do, seriously even atom of my being was urging me not to do it, but I have faith!). I then attached the smaller piece on and turned the intensity to a 2. I was amazed at the speed, within 30 seconds I had zapped my whole upperlip area and I will definitely be moving up to a three next time.

My mum's experience wasn't quite the same, she didn't like the idea of shaving so she epilated and then used the Lumea about 10 minutes later. Mum experienced a lot of sensitivity, which I found odd considering she has quite a high pain tolerance and doesn't even wince during epilation! We both realised it was because her skin was still tender from epilation and for future treatment we'll wait at least 24 hours (which is what they recommended for waxing).

Next Sunday I think I'm going to do other areas and my arms and upper lip again, so I'm all in sync and then I'll see what the progress is on Sunday the 10th - the date you can expect my next update. Feel free to leave me any questions you have, I think I've covered everything but let me know if I haven't! Also if you're interested in this particular model - the Philips Lumea Prestige SC2007/00 IPL Hair Removal System for Face and Body, get it now whilst it's reduced because it's a somewhat affordable price here

Have any of you used this before? I'd love to hear your experiences ^_^

I plan to write multiple updates and let you know how we get on with this, as often as I can and I hope these posts will be useful for anyone who's been thinking about investing in one too.
