February Favourites

february favourites the blushing giraffe

Hello lovely people, I hope you're having a great start to the weekend so far. Today I'm going to be sharing the products I loved during the month of February, a real mix of skincare and makeup. I definitely got back into eyeshadow this month, thanks to my giftcard and new additions which have been very exciting, so lets get started!

february favourites the blushing giraffe

This has been my go-to base of choice in February, mainly because its so quick to apply with just the tips of my fingers and it works really well at evening out the skin-tone too. For an everyday base this is ideal, it covers up discolouration, brightens and leaves a dewy and radiant finish to the skin. Although at first St. Moritz looks a little dark, I find the colour lightens slightly once I'm done applying my makeup. I will say however that as my skin is normal/combo now, with an oily nose, I do always have to apply powder to my nose area if I don't want to look super shiny a few hours later! So for oily skinned girls I feel like face powder would be necessary if you use this as it'll increase  longevity too. I love that this base contains SPF of 30, it means I can skip that step in the morning, so if you're usually in a rush when doing makeup and you want a dewy base which evens out the skin, you should definitely try this out!

I have definitely re-discovered the L.A girl concealer which took the makeup world by storm last year and I am so glad that I have! It is one of my all time favourites and this particular shade is so perfect for my under-eyes. I find that the slight orange tone when you first apply it, really brightens up the area when blended out. I always have to go in with a corrector shade first (I'll link the review to my current favourite below), however this is one of the only concealers that doesn't crease, shade wise it matches really well and best of all is really affordable! Most of you will know that I love beautyjoint.com for U.S beauty, however you can now order them for a similar price from Amazon which I've linked above, so if you don't want to order internationally there are more options available which is great.

I've owned this bronzer for months now, but it's never really been one I've reached for on a daily basis. At first I was obsessed with the Too Faced chocolate soleil, then NARS Laguna and then of course the Kat Von D contour kit. You may be able to tell I love me some bronzer! Of course all of those mentioned products are much loved, but this month I wanted less of a focus on proper contouring and a product which would add warmth and a subtle amount of definition. I totally forgot that Hoola is quite unique, although it looks almost orange in the pan, it actually applies slightly grey toned and it's also buildable! Especially for adding a natural looking nose contour, but also a great all rounder - Hoola is brilliant and works great for light to medium skintones.

If there is one thing Topshop do fantastically, it's highlighters! You may know that I adore their glow pots, one of the best cream highlighers I have ever tried (reviewed already). I have had Horizon for a few months, but I was saving it for the summer time as it looks super bronzy in the pan. However it's quite deceiving because although it appears as if it could be a bronzer, it's the most gorgeous rose gold tone highlight with a silver/bronzy mix too. Wow, that has to be the worst description I have ever written of a product ._. If you're Stromboli or darker in skintone, you need to try this out! Don't be alarmed that it isn't the typical champagne/brighter gold colour, because on olive/medium skintones this looks gorgeous and when the light hits there is a slight silver tone which is super flattering. At the same time it's not an in your face kind of highlighter which means I've been wearing it every single day that I've applied makeup and it is BEAUTIFUL.

I made this eyeshadow palette months ago and since ordering some MUG shades I have really gotten back into experimenting with shadows again! If you read my haul you will know that I ordered a lot of crease and transition shades, as well as a few base shades. I didn't pick up a highlight/ base colour or my absolute favourite shade of eyeshadows (gold tones) because I already have the perfect ones in this Inglot palette ^_^ The light yellow shadow (313) is literally perfection for every single day because I use a concealer to cover the darkness on my eyelids and I need a bright powder to set it in place. The cooler gold shadow in 155 is probably my most favourite gold I own, it is beautiful and the formula of these shadows are wonderful. They last all day long, the pigmentation doesn't fade and I am so glad that I've put this back into my daily rotation again.

I have been enjoying many of these beautiful eyeshadows, yes they are totally worth the hype! However the shade Creme Brulee has been my all time favourite and the one I opted for everyday, along side Inglot's 313. I have heard countless beauty gurus rave about this shade and I always wondered why...well, let me share this wisdom with you all today!  It is a MAGICAL shade, sure it looks pretty boring in the pan, but it literally pulls together any eyeshadow look you create. Adding this to the crease, then popping a couple of other shades on, then using this shade again to blend the whole crease area together...et voila you have an eyeshadow look which appears to have taken a lot longer than it seemed!

THIS PALETTE IS WORTH ALL THE HYPE IT GETS. It is officially my favourite neutrals palette, you only need one swipe because the pigmentation is so fantastic. The formula is creamy and each shade is super blendable too. I've swatched a couple of my favourite shades below to show how beautiful they are ^_^ If you've been umming and ahhing about this, trust me and just pick it up, you'll thank me later because the hype is totally real.

I cannot sing this mascara's praises enough, it is ahhhhhmazing. Pretty much the perfect voluminising mascara and it costs less than £3 which makes it even more brilliant. Granted it does give slightly clumpy lashes, but that's nothing a decent lengthening mascara can't sort out. I've said before that I'm not really a mascara kind of girl, because it is such a hassle to remove. However I've had this particular one for a good couple of weeks now and it's showing no signs of drying out...so I thought I should get a couple more uses out of it before I throw it away - and this month I've fallen for it all over again. A real must have in my collection for sure.

L-R: Inglot 313, Inglot 155, Zoeva cocoa blend 4 swatches, one swipe of creme brulee at the end!

I purchased a duo pack of this back in the X-mas sales for an insane price, literally 2for1 and after hearing about this for a few months I couldn't resist that deal! Liquid gold is a chemical exfoliator which has been designed for the treatment and reduction of skin issues such as hyper-pigmentation, age spots, sun damage and scarring. The magic ingredients are the glycolic acid and the liquorice root extract. The very next morning after I apply this, my skin looks brighter and feels smoother too. It also dries out spots considerably and I have noticed a difference in the hyper-pigmentation around my mouth. I need to continue using it consistently for a few more weeks before I write an in-depth review, but I simply had to give it a mention in this post because it has evened out my skintone more than I had expected. (Not quite as much as I want, but I shall keep using it regularly!). Also two weeks ago I discovered a great budget product which has SIMILAR results..watch this space, I may have stumbled across a wonderful alternative!

Another bargain from the sales, this serum by one of my favourite skincare brands ever has been a skincare game changer. To be honest for the full price, I would expect nothing less because almost £30 for a serum is pricey for my student budget. The serum claims to provide 24 hour moisturisation, as well as soothe the skin. It is super lightweight, absorbs into my skin easily and it really does make my moisturiser sink deeper/better into my skin, rather than sit on the surface. The weather has been so much colder in February than December/January (so typical *rolls eyes*) and with that my skin has been freaking out a little. This serum went a long way in balancing it out and taking away that horrid tight dehydrated feeling almost instantly. I'm not sure if I would repurchase unless it was on a similar sale, but whilst it's in my collection I will be using it daily.

Antipodes is another skincare brand favourite of mine, so when I saw this duo I simply had to pick it up. Like I mentioned in the above paragraph, my skin has been pretty dehydrated so I started using the Divine Face Oil  from the start of February. The blend of avocado oil and rosehip oil really do work to hydrate the skin without making it feel greasy at all. I have also been using it now and again to mix with the EX1 foundation which is just a little too thick for my liking. A tiny bit of this oil makes the absolute world of difference, it helps the base blend so much easier and takes away any cakeyness as well as adding a subtle glow! The Vanilla Pod hyrating day cream smells wonderful and a little bit goes a long way too. Again like the oil, it feels light on the skin yet still manages to add a boost of hydration. The size of the products are great too, so I'd highly recommend picking up this kit as the full sized products can be rather expensive.

Phew, that post felt like it took an age to write! I'm sure I'm the last person to share my February favourites, so please link your post below if you've written one OR let me know you favourite product from the last month!

Thank-you for reading ♥

Hello lovely people, I hope you're having a great start to the weekend so far. Today I'm going to be sharing the products I loved during the month of February, a real mix of skincare and makeup. I definitely got back into eyeshadow this month, thanks to my giftcard and new additions which have been very exciting, so lets get started!

A Trio Of Empties #2

empties post lush ocean salt face and body scrub bourjois dissolvant 1 seconde nail polish remover nuxe reve de miel day cream

Hey guys, hope you’re all doing well. Today I have another three empty products to discuss with you, my part 1 is here and the reason why I split it into threes is because they’re much more manageable than collecting a whole basketful of essentially rubbish! Plus I get to ramble on a bit more ^_^

1. Lush Ocean Salt Face and Body Scrub* | £13.95

I finally came to the end of this tub which is quite a generous amount for the price. I actually got this at my first Lush blogger event all those months ago and I guess it took me so long to use because I have pretty mixed feelings about it. Personally I found it too gritty and a little harsh to use as a facial exfoliator and I much prefer gentle exfoliators. However when used on arms and legs it buffs away dead skin and leaves them feeling silky and smooth. The two reasons why I’m not head over heels about this is because firstly it can sting a little which is most probably the sea salt! Nonetheless I’d rather not have the stinging and I’m sure there are similarly priced alternatives which will give me the same result. Secondly this contains actual vodka which I didn’t realise until I got towards the end and someone on IG told me about it...why it contains vodka I’m not 100% sure but as Muslims aren’t supposed to drink the stuff I’m sure we aren’t meant to use it in a scrub either ._.

Repurchase? Aesthetically pleasing to look at yeah, but too many cons for me pick this up again! I would love to try the Soap and Glory breakfast scrub next.

2. Bourjois Magic Nail Polish Remover | £4.99 £3.99

I believe this is the first nail polish pot thing to come into the market and I for one really enjoyed it. Although it doesn’t quite take the 1 seconde it states on the pot, it does take away the mess of the pads and actually makes the whole removal process cheaper as well as quicker. The only downside I found was that glitter polish does not mix well with the sponge in the pot here at all! Also right at the end of its use my fingers kind of started to turn black as the makeup remover itself ran out and the sponge could probably have seen better days. It was easy enough to wash off, just a little annoying but I suppose one can expect that. Anyways its on sale at ASOS atm (linked above) so I may pick it up on payday if its still there.

Repurchase? If its not on sale I’d be interested in trying some alternatives but to be honest I enjoyed it enough to buy again for around a fiver.

3. Nuxe Reve de Miel Ultra Comfortable Face Cream -Day Cream | £23

I LOVED this moisturiser, easily the best one I have tried and in this case the price really paid off. I did manage to get it for around £15 which softened the blow but it lasted for around 6 months of daily use and it was incredibly hydrating and soothing. I believe this cream is one of the main reasons why my skin became less dry and more on the normal side of things and every time I applied it my skin felt really happy y’know? Plump, soothed and prepped for the whole day. It is scented but a comfortable scent nothing strong or over-powering. I’m not used to seeing a big difference with skincare and this is a moisturiser I really adored but the price isn’t student friendly enough for me to justify till there is a significant sale on sadly :c Currently I’m using a budget friendly boots botanics moisturiser which is nice but nothing to write home about, so if you do have dry skin I would 100% recommend you picking this up if you can.

Repurchase: Yes! But when there is a sale on so I’ll be keeping an eye out.

Disappointing Products #1

disappointing products clinique take the day off makeup remover nuxe reve de meil scandaleyes thick and thin liner seventeen phwoarr paint

Hello my lovely readers, I hope you’re all doing well. This post is something that has been in the pipeline for a while, and I thought it was about time I typed it up. Now before we divulge into the products I want to say that I am still using some of these products (due to hating  wasting makeup) and by ‘disappointing’ it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re useless. Sometimes you have high expectations and they just don’t live up to them. What works for me may not work for everybody and vica versa. My beauty blog is about things I love 90% of the time, but what good is a beauty blog if it doesn’t discuss the not so good sometimes either?? ^_^

IMG_2266 (800x534)

1. SEVENTEEN Phwoarr Paint | Review

For me any concealer that claims to cover up dark circles has my interest so I gave it a shot after reading several reviews. Although the drugstore are notorious for having not enough shades, the fact that there were two made me assume that the light shade would be salmon coloured and the medium colour would be peach toned. THAT would have been brilliant for girls like myself who have horrendous dark circles that are not blue in colour, but  nope medium is pink toned, it looks bizarrely white/grey under my eyes and fails to colour correct. After reading promising reviews I was more than a little disappointed.....however it’s not ALL dark and gloomy, because I may have found two other uses for it...more on that later..but if you’re looking for a good cover all concealer, expensive but SO worth it - invest in the Kevyn Aucoin SSE. It’s changed my life for real.

2. Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Balm

Oh my goodness, you would not believe the hype behind this lip balm! It is insane, so SO many beauty bloggers and vloggers swear by this lipbalm, so naturally I had high hopes. It’s by one of my favourite skincare brands, but on this occasion I feel let down. It’s known to be a matte lip balm, and the thick texture contributes to that. However it seems to do NOTHING to sooth or nourish the lips for me, even when rubbed in/applied thickly at night. I’ve tried this in so many ways and to no avial. Honestly the only use I have for this is a matte base for when I want a matte look. I’m sad it didn’t work for me, but I think there are better lip balms that actually do what they say - for a couple of quid. Blistex, ily xox

rimmel london scandaleyes thick and thin eyeliner

3.  Rimmel London Scandaleyes Thick and Thin Eyeliner

I got this eyeliner free in one of those promotional ‘spend this much and get...’ and let me tell you if I had paid a fiver for this I would NOT have been happy. The tip of the pen is kinda in the shape of those posh handwriting pens we had at school which where encased in an olive green packaging and were for fancy calligraphy writing. The concept of having a thinner tip at one end seems brilliant but in reality the tip is hard and can be painful to apply to the delicate eye area. The liner itself didn’t flow well and I had to keep going over and over the eye for an even line, something I expect maybe after two months of use,  but certainly not on first use! I have tried twice more to make this work, but to no luck. In the bin you go, where you belong. (Try their exaggerate liquid liner it’s 100X better).

4. Natural Collection Lipliner ‘Almond’ (not pictured, chucked away I hated it that much)

A lipliner that just doesn’t line or fill in the lips nicely at all. The texture is really bizarre and on my lips it emphasises any dry patches extensively. It looks sickly on my complexion and every time I tried to make it work I was reminded that again this is not a product that I can get on with. Perhaps it’s the shade that makes me dislike it even more? Regardless not a product I would recommend, the Rimmel lip liners (both lines) are far superior and only one or two pounds more, so if I were you I’d skip past this stand and head to Rimmel.

5. Clinique - Take The Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes & Lips

So this is actually from an UNETHICAL brand - owned by Estee Lauder. But I thought I should add it anyways as I know lots of ladies read this blog and I honestly think you should save your monies and skip this out. I purchased it in 2013 in the Debenhams sale and I expected excellent things from such a well loved brand on the blogosphere, however it was a miserable experience from day one. It’s in a two part solution, one of oil the other of the makeup remover. This is worth £17 so I would expect it to remove eyemake-up with no issues. However it took a lot of uncomfortable rubbing of the solution soaked pad, and still I have black smears around my eyes which I had to remove using a separate remover?! Ridiculous, I would be annoyed if a drugstore makeup remover caused me so much hassle, so the fact that this costs a lot of money for what is it, and still didn’t work, ugh I cannot express how frustrating that is. Bioderma is SOO much better, please don’t waste your money on this fraudulent rubbish which also funds Israel’s war crimes.

That is it for part one, I know this isn’t the most positive post but hey that is just life, not everything goes the way we want it too, and these 5 found a way to disappoint me personally, but like I said for a couple of them they’re well loved! Just a little heads up.

Thank-you for reading ♥

August Favourites

august favourites

Hello everybody, I hope you’re all well. I cannot believe we’re at September 2014 already, summer has gone by so quickly...infact this whole year has been such a blur, I can’t believe I’m weeks away from entering the second year of Uni ._.

I have five favourites from the month of August, so lets begin.

benefit hoola bronzer elf eyebrow kit

When I first purchased this, I can’t say it was love at first bronze. If you happened to read my first impressions posts, you’ll know I found this disappointingly light....to swatch. Everytime I swatched the bronzer on my hand it just wouldn’t show up clearly at all and I guess I just judged the stuff too quickly. Going through my collection of bronzers for my new mini series (bronzing on a budget) I decided to actually put this to the test using my RT contour brush and I was very impressed! It gave a great shadow-like illusion, whilst adding some warmth to the face too. My face is a lot lighter than my hands, around NC30-35 and this shows up nicely. The actual box packaging with the brush and all...I’m not so sure on yet, but Hoola has a giant thumbs up from me!
benefit hoola bronzer elf eyebrow kit

I certainly dismissed this little thing when I first purchased it several months ago, and I have made a surprising discovery with it too read this post here if curious ^_^. Now for less than £4....and just over £2 in the 50% off sale this is well worth your pennies, with a wax on one side and a powder on the other you can choose whether you want super strong brows, subtle or a mix of the both. Personally I don’t use the powder side for my brows, but I have been loving running a little of the wax to outline them and then taking a spoolie to distribute the product through them all and achieve a naturally groomed look.

makeup revolution baked blush real techniques sponge

I purchased two of these baked blush and when I first swatched them I thought they looked too shimmery for my liking. However this month I’ve found myself picking this up quite a lot throughout the month, because it adds a beautiful glow to the cheeks and the colour, a medium-deep (slightly toned down ) pink looks gorgeous with bronzed skin and without! Its a lovely shade for achieving that flushed look, like you’ve been for a jog (ha .__.). Because it is a little shimmery on the skin you don’t need a highlighter here, so its like a multi-function blush and I’m really impressed! Unfortunately I also dropped it on my wooden floor hence the smashed up bits, but it’s nothing a bit of rubbing alcohol cannot fix ^_^

Real Techniques Complexion Sponge - £ 5.99 (currently on sale) - link

All the talk in the beauty world about these sponges certainly got me curious, but I just couldn’t let myself spend over £15 on the beauty blender! Hearing so many good things about the RT equivalent, it was a no-brainer for me, I had to buy this. Now aside from the tear in it ._. I have to say I have really been enjoying this with my thicker foundations to achieve a flawless finish, but mainly to blend out highlight for when I’m doing the whole full-face-of-makeup look. The flat edge and the point are both really useful, and although its a bit odd bouncing a damp sponge against my face, the finish you eventually get it worth it! If you prefer to go for full coverage foundations I think brushes are the way to go, but its worth picking this up to have around/play with and see if it works well with whatever bases and concealers you use. On a side note - I HATE how grubby it looks on a permanent basis, despite scrubbing away with my Dr. Bronners

nuxe reve de meil face cream

I purchased this in a sale for around £15, which is very reasonable for high-end skincare but not exactly budget friendly. It kind of sits in the middle. Anyway I have been using this consistently for several months, and although its not been the ONLY reason, my skin which was more on the dry spectrum, is now very much on the normal side much to my delight. I have grown to love this cream, as much as everyone loves the Nuxe Reve De Meil Lipbalm.  Not only does it feel nourishing but it makes a good base for my makeup and a little goes a long way, so this will last me till next spring I’m sure - which really is getting my moneys worth.

And those are the products that have been floating my boat recently. I’m in a bit of a tricky situation with makeup right now because I’m trying to use up products from brands I won’t be buying again due to ethical reasons, but at the same time I’m breaking into lots of new makeup too from Bourjois, Makeup Revolution and Essence.

I’ve started to make a full makeup inventory, and apart from the pain of listing out every single item of makeup item I own, I think it will be very helpful in making sure I do start to use everything, rather than recycling the same bits and bobs all the time. (Well at least I’m trying D:)

Morning Skincare Routine

morning skin care routine

Hello! Whenever people ask me about my morning skincare routine, I always think ‘morning skincare? what morning skincare??’ but actually recently I have made myself stick to a routine (which was one of my goals of 2014!) and although it looks like a LOAD of stuff, it takes me around 5 minutes max, because I’m not really a morning person (said every student ever)

REN Rosa Centifolia Cleansing Gel

Starting with a cleanser, if I’ve used any oils or spot treatments the night before I like to make sure all residue is removed. Currently I’ve been using the REN cleansing gel, which I reviewed here. It is lightweight and free from parabens, sulphates, fragrances etc;

I pump a small amount on my fingers and rub it into my skin, then using a damp flannel I remove the cleanser, finishing off with a thorough rinsing of the skin.

IMG_3149

Once I’ve rinsed the cleanser off, I tone my skin to make sure all dirt and remaining residue is wiped off. I firstly spritz my face with Lush’s Eau Roma Water which claims to ‘hydrate the skin without causing it to overreact’.Then I take half a cotton pad and gently wipe off the rest of the water. The main ingredient in this is lavender water, which has very calming properties for the skin. (I also love using rosewater on the skin.)

IMG_3157

Now my face is fresh and clean, as I have normal-dry skin I do find the gel cleanser a little drying on the skin, so I go in with a serum. I squeeze a small blob of hydraluron on my ring finger and rub it into my face, forehead and chin.  This claims to ‘increase skin hydration from below the surface….and holds up to 1,000 times in its weight.’ I do definitely find myself using LESS moisturiser after I have applied this and I enjoy using it, but I’m also curious to try out other serums similar to this when I’ve used this tube up.

IMG_3168IMG_3172

My current moisturiser of choice is the Reve de Meil Ultra Comfortable Face Cream which is pretty high-end, for me anyways!  I used to swear by the oilatum one, however my skin got too used to that and it stopped retaining the moisture :(

This french cream is thick and nourishing, and I am really enjoying using it!

IMG_3177

I always try to apply an eye cream morning and night, but especially before I do my makeup as I still have dry patches around my eyes which means they need extra tlc. I’m using the Good Things bright eyes, eye cream which claims to tackle puffiness and dark circles. I can’t say it’s done much for the darkness after consistent use for at least three months, however I do like how moisturising it feels for the delicate under-eye area. My face cream feels a little too thick for under the eyes, but this seems just right.

IMG_3184

Finally I apply my Reve de Meil Lip Balm, y’know the one every blogger who has tried it seems to love? I think to be honest I was quite undewhelmed by it at first…but I do love how it moisturises my lips, leaves a matte finish (so any lipstick ontop applies evenly) and also lasts for longer than the average lip balm.

…and that is about it! My morning skincare routine complete! I will be posting a nightime skincare routine in a couple of days as I do tend to switch my products up a little. What are you favourite morning skincare loves?

Thanks for reading!

Haul | French Pharmacy

french pharamacy haul

Hello! I wanted to share this haul with you today because there is still time for you to get your hands on some lovely skincare which isn’t always the easiest or cheapest to get from the UK, for up to a third off!
IMG_9659

I was reading a post from the lovely makeup magpie (her blog is here, do check it out, each post is amazing!) and she was talking about a new moisturiser she has started using which is by the brand Nuxe. It is the ‘Reve De Miel Ultra Comfortable Face Cream’ and as I have been on the look out for a replacement to my oilatum, I decided that with 1/3 off now was the time to snap it up! Especially after reading such a glowing review, I now have my hopes up for this! It is the most expensive moisturiser I have purchased, even with the third off the price tag (just over £15) but since my skincare kick I’ve decided that some things do (sometimes) need to be invested in. The second thing I just could not resist was the Nuxe Reve De Miel Ultra Nourishing Lip Balm’. I just had to see what all the fuss was about regarding this! One of the reasons this is so loved is because apparently it leaves lips with a matte texture, so it’s good for when you want to apply lipstick in a hurry but still give your lips the tlc they deserve. With a third off this is just under £7 I believe.

IMG_9655

The final thing I bought was the La-Roche Posay Cicaplast. I was going to purchase their face cream which is targeted towards very dry skin, and just use it on areas where I am having trouble with dry patches. However it made more sense to purchase this, which is designed for flaky skin, and can be used on lips as well, rather than buying a moisturiser JUST for a small area on my face.  I’m looking forward to trying each of these properly and will report back soon ^_^

On Escentual.com they have all the French skincare brands that I’ve heard of, plus more on sale with up to 1/3 off till the end of March. So if you’ve had your eye on anything for a while, now is the time to grab it! They postage was really fast and it was free delivery over £30!

Have you tried any French Pharmacy brands? Got any recommendations? I’d love to know in the comments!
