Inner-corner highlights

inner corner highlights the blushing giraffe

I remember the first time I inner-corner highlighted...it was a sparkling moment (hehe). Ok so why bother adding that highlight into the inner corner you ask? Well it helps your whole face look a little brighter, your eyes look bigger and it somehow pulls together the whole eyeshadow look. Of course you don’t always want a shimmery colour in your inner corner, but I think when makeup is neutral and matte, you need a bit of suttin suttin to liven it all up! Especially in the winter time when lighting is gloomy, weather is cold and everything just feels a bit blurgh.

This paired with a nude liner in the waterline will transform your sleepy eyes into bright, sparkling beauties. I’m going to run you through a few of my favourites with links so you can check them out yourselves.

Apologies for the lack of photos in this post, it’s just that frustrating time of the year where photos don’t look right.

MUA Eye Shadow - Shade 1 Pearl: Starting off with the cheapest, this beautifully buttery soft eyeshadow is a stunning bright cross between gold, yellow and pearl. A little of this added into the inner corner and just under the start of the lower-lashline adds light and detracts attention from any under-eye baggage that might be going on! Also with a heft 2g of the stuff for only a quid you won’t be running out any time soon, or will you be denting the purse.

CK Eyeshadow - Tangelo | Link:  Another very budget-friendly option is one of my favourite single eyeshadows of all time, the shade Tangelo. It’s a little less pigmented and less golden than Pearl and so I opt for this on work days or when I’ve not made much of an effort with my makeup, but I just want a little brightening in the eye area. I also love using this all over the lid, which makes its convenient to swish into the inner-corner while I’m at it too. yay 2-in-1

Rimmel Scandaleyes Eye Shadow Stick - 002 Bulletproof Beige | Link: The best way to describe the colour of this is as a ‘light copper’. Light enough to use in the inner-corner anyways! I love the fact that it’s super creamy and the chunkiness of the pencil makes it easy to dab on to the inner-corners where I need it! I normally use this as a base for when I am doing party makeup and need it to last, however it works great alone too as a much more subtle brightener.

The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer | Link: Could a highlighter post ever be complete without this beauty? Of course not! When you want a killer cheek highlight, this is the gal for you, and she works equally well in the inner-corner too. The most creamy, buttery, highly pigmented powder you will ever find in your life, with a golden/pearl like undertone. This one is ONLY an inner-corner highlight for special occasions, because it’s a little too gorgeous to be rocking at uni!

Stila Eyeshadow - Kitten | Link: If Mary-Lou is a little too golden for you, opt for Kitten when you want a intensely pigmented highlighter shade for your inner-corner! Bloggers have raved about this shade and it’s a real beauty - a mix of pink and silver. Personally my favourite shimmery shade from the In the light palette is Bubbly and it would look gorgeous on deeper complexions.

What are your favourite shades to add some sparkle to the inner-corner?

Thank-you for reading ♥

Drugstore Makeup Starter Kit

drugstore makeup starter kit

Hello ladies, I’ve watched quite a few of these makeup starter kits on YouTube and when I was asked to recommend some products for a beginner in makeup I thought I would put together a post (thanks Rebekah!). Today I am going to share with you the items I would tell myself to buy a couple of years back when I first got into makeup.
bourjois cc cream essence stay natural concealer collection lasting perfection

Base Products
First things first I wouldn’t recommend buying a foundation if you’re new to makeup. Makeup is supposed to enhance your natural beauty and it’s very easy to become dependant on it everyday. It’s not great to mask your skin, so yes do pick up a foundation, but save it for night outs and weddings rather than every single day. Instead I would recommend the Bourjois 123 CC cream - £9.99. ‘CC’ stands for Colour Correction and its amazing at evening out the skin-tone whilst leaving a natural finish. If you’d like to read the full review click right here.

If you have good skin, stick with using concealers rather then a base. The Collection Lasting Perfection - £4.19 is the most well known, talked about drugstore concealer on the blogosphere, and I swear by it. Personally the high coverage works great for my dark circles, but I know some people find it too thick for under-eye. It is phenomenal for all blemishes, spots and dark marks too. I would also recommend buying a lighter and illuminating concealer if you don’t have dark circles - my favourite at the moment is Essence Stay Natural - £2.00 which has a brush applicator and not only can I use this under the eyes but on the bridge of my nose, cheekbones and forehead to add a natural highlight! Be warned though this doesn’t have a whole lot of coverage - best for illuminating! Essence is available from Wilko.

bourjois happy balance powder rimmel natural bronzer
Face Powders

First things first, if you’re a dry skinned girl, stay away from the powder it’ll do you no favours. Also if you do pick up the CC Cream the finish on that is very much normal, not dewy and so there’s not much to set. However if you find yourself getting hot often, or you have oily skin the I would recommend the Bourjois Healthy Balance Powder - £8.99. This isn’t the cheapest compact you can find in boots but it is the best one. When you scrimp on powder you can easily get a cakey crusty look at worst, and normally just makes your face appear flat. This is the powder that keeps shininess away whilst still adding a slight glow which is pretty awesome - I’ve also heard its a dupe for the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Powder AND the Chanel le beige powder (thank-you Amelia again!).

As far as bronzers go I highly recommend the Rimmel Natural Bronzer - £2.99 (I’d recommend you getting this from this link rather than boots as its half the price!). I’ve reviewed it here already so I won’t say much, but its certainly my starter bronzer of choice as its light, not shimmery and buildable ^_^ Bronzers are amazing for warming up the face, just take a fluffy brush and apply to the cheekbones, jawline and forehead.

rimmel pink rose blush sleek rose gold essence silky touch blush

Blushers
The world of blush is vast and can be overwhelming for a newbie to makeup. So stick to light buildable shades, that add a flush of colour onto the cheeks and are hard to get that clown effect. Some of my favourites are Rimmel Lasting Finish Powder Blush in Pink Rose - £3.99, Sleek blush in Rose Gold - £4.50 and Essence Silky Touch Blush in 10 - £2.50. Both the Rimmel and Essence blushes are easy to apply without looking OTT and really do add a beautiful natural glow to the skin. Sleek have every shade of blush imaginable under the sun, and Rose Gold is their most famous and can be a little shimmery, so do use a light hand if you pick up this beautiful shade.

rimmel moisture renew lipstick kate lasting finish lipstick e.l.f mineral lip tint
Lips
Again like the cheeks, go for a light option for the lips. When I got into makeup I didn’t buy any lipsticks only glosses and even now it takes a lot of effort to remember to top up the lipstick after a few hours. I’m not a fan of faffing about with reapplying products, nor do I like lipsticks that cling to dry patches. Therefore my top picks would the old Rimmel Moisture Renew line - £6.50 which I reviewed here. Also E.L.F have some fantastic options in their mineral line so I would 100% recommend subscribing to their newsletter and waiting for their huge sales! To see which products are my hits and misses from E.L.F click here.

makeup revolution brow shaping kit rimmel scandal eyes kohl liner nude collection fast stroke eyeliner MUA undressed eyeshadow palette
Eyes and Brows
Brows can be intimidating, but its surprising how little bit of filling in and...whaaam your face instantly looks groomed and put together! I am loving this Makeup Revolution Focus & Fix Eyebrow Shaping Kit - £2.50. You can find this in some superdrug stores, but I usually order online because you get free delivery on orders over £30 and they have some amazing high quality makeup for some ridiculous prices. This kit is fantastic because there are 3 separate shades of powder and an applicator with tweezer (what more could you ask for?!). The one pencil liner I would highly recommend is the Rimmel Scandal eyes waterproof kohl liner in Nude - £3.99 I have raved about this one my blog many times, as its a brilliant eye brightener, makes your eyes look larger and more wide awake and essentially its a life saver for when you’ve had a lack of sleep!
Winged liner is my must, its truly amazing how much of a difference two lines can make to a face!

To be honest I don’t have one true favourite liquid liner but I have been loving the Collection Fast Stroke in Brown AND Black - £2.50 The brush is perfect for thick and thin, its easy to control and the brown liner is just excellent for school or work situations because it still defines the eyes but isn’t as full on as black can appear to be.

As for eyeshadow, make sure you pick up the MUA undressed palette - £4. Its supposedly a dupe for the Urban Decay Naked palette and its the main palette I used throughout 2013. It has all the shades you could need for basic day-to-day looks and also for night looks. If you’re looking to spend a couple more pounds go for the I heart chocolate makeup palette (available here). But the MUA one is available from any Superdrug store and perfect for starters in makeup.

I hope this post was beneficial for you all ^_^ what products would you fellow makeup lovers recommend to any newbies?

Drugstore Makeup Starter Kit

drugstore makeup starter kit

Hello ladies, I’ve watched quite a few of these makeup starter kits on YouTube and when I was asked to recommend some products for a beginner in makeup I thought I would put together a post (thanks Rebekah!). Today I am going to share with you the items I would tell myself to buy a couple of years back when I first got into makeup.

Whats in my travel makeup bag?

travel makeup bag

Hello everybody! Today I am going to share with you what I took along with me when I went to London for a few days. Personally when I am away from home, the range of makeup I take with me is not important because 1. I’m going away to spend time with family/visit new places and 2. I have to lug it all around, no tank u

On that note, the things that I do choose to take with me need to be reliable and non-faff!
IMG_6601

This is my travel makeup bag – its really cute if I do say so myself! By the brand ThursdayFriday,  I bought it from asos and you can find the same/similar right here (currently on sale!). I was pleasantly surprised about how much I got into it, and actually I didn’t need to take my RT brush holder (which you get with the core collection and starter eye kit) because I was only taking 4 brushes, and they fitted snuggly inside too!

IMG_6640

The base I opted for, has been one that I am continuously impressed with whenever I apply it - the Bourjois 123 Perfect CC cream. Firstly it provides a light-medium coverage, and effectively covers up redness, whilst still giving natural finish. I love love love the finish and the SPF which is something my other bases actually lack. I think another reason why I adore this is how blend-able it is with my fingers! I mean sure you can use a brush, but I prefer le fingers because its quick, simple and great coverage for a CC cream.

Blush wise I went for a shimmery one Sleek Rose Gold blush and a matte one Natural Collection – Peach Melba. I opted for these because they are small, and if they do end up being broken due to travel it won’t be the end of the world (won’t catch me saying the same about thing for my NARS ones being broken!). Also I’m trying to use the NC ones up as I don’t really have room in my collection for them anymore, and their lasting power isn’t fabulous. However the two mixed gave a beautiful pink glow, which stayed put for a decent amount of time.

Highlight, I went for the super versatile MUA shimmer kisses bronzer, which I’m considering doing a full review for because for it’s price, I really think it should be in everyone’s collection!

IMG_6620

My normal concealer routine consists of these three products, so how could I leave them behind?! The Benefit Erase Paste – shade 3 as my corrector, the collection lasting perfection – shade 3 as my concealer and all set with the Ben Nye Banana Powder. My two every-day under-eye essential brushes are the RT detailer brush, for applying the corrector and the RT setting brush for the Ben Nye.

IMG_6642

For the eyes I kept it really simple, with the MUA Undress me too palette, which is basically the perfect drugstore palette along side its elder sister. I mean for under a fiver could you ask for anything more? A matte base, a matte black, lots of golden, bronzes and taupes!  I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be without this in my collection ^_^ I decided to skip on liner, and just add some darker shadow if I wanted more definition.  For brows I took my ABH Brow Wiz in the shade Brunette, which has the perfect spoolie!

Lips wise was a random selection that was already in my handbag – MAC’s Peach Blossom and the MUA Power Pout in Rendezvous.

I know it might seem like a lot for some people, but it was a toughie to narrow my collection down to a couple of things! I mean I didn’t even put in a contour, eyeliner or mascara (shock horror!). Actually I quite enjoyed not having all that choice, it reminded me of during my spending ban time when I restricted myself to a few products for the whole week – I feel like that’s how you really get a feel for the products and how to best use them y’know?

What are your must haves when travelling?

Spring Picks | Nails

spring picks nails the blushing giraffe
Hello! Since I’ve been switching up my makeup recently, as Spring has FINALLY sprung here in the UK, I thought I’d share what I’ll be using, and what I’m liking the look of for this spring!
So nails wise, I know pastels are ALWAYS in for spring time, and I love the look of milky colours, or ‘off-white colours’. Personally I don’t think many shades suit my own skintone…especially lighter shades, but here are a few that look perfect for spring and hopefully I’ll be a bit more brave with my choices, rather than sticking to my typical dark purple shades!
topshop easy breezy ciate sugar plum ciate ferris wheel review swatch spring nail polish ciate amazing gracie mua lush lilac barry m blush moon
L-R : Ciate Amazing Gracie, MUA Lush Lilac, Barry M Blue Moon, Ciate Ferris Wheel, Ciate Sugar Plum, Topshop Easy Breezy

All of my Ciate polishes are their mini paint pots which I purchased at a discounted price from fragrance direct. I’m not sure if they are still available, but they’re worth checking out if you can get your hands on them because they’re the perfect way to try different shades from a high end nail brand, without splashing a lot of cash! Although they’re minis, the full size is available online too :)

So staring off with the more vibrant shades..

Topshop – Easy Breezy: I bought this polish YEARS ago (do polishes have an expiry date??) and because I didn’t like the way it look against my skintone I’ve hardly used the stuff which is a shame, because I was impressed to see that with one coat this was almost fully opaque! I will be braver and use easy breezy this spring because its a gorgeous light teal shade, which matches a few silver rings that I own.

Ciate Sugar Plum: A beautiful cross between a lilac and a purple, this is where my comfort zone is at. I’m not sure why but I am drawn to purples polishes – and this is no exception. I love how its slightly muted tone means it’s really spring appropriate (not too bright like summer shades seems to be)

Ciate Ferris Wheel: The bluest on the bunch! This is a clear baby blue shade and there isn’t much else to say about it really! It has no hint of green, yellow or any other funkiness and I love how fresh this shade is despite being a light blue.

ciate amazing gracie MUA lush lilac Barry m blue moon swatch nail polish review spring

Ciate Amazing Gracie: How beautiful is this pinkish white shade?! It reminds me of a well loved Essie shade that is similar, but I adore this nude/neutral colour that has a hint of girliness about it. I think white nails can look very classy, but sometimes a little TOO stark? This however is a beautiful mix of pink and white, and a full sized bottle will be replacing the mini once I’m all out!

MUA Lush Lilac: Another beautiful shade, a lot more muted than Sugar Plum, I really like the way this can look lilac in some lights and pink in others! For £1 MUA allow you to experiment with all sorts of colours (I know they’ve just released a new batch) and I have my eye on some more of these lighter shades because they have got the colour so right!

Barry M Blue Moon: I left Ciate’s swatch on there (far right) to show you that these could almost be mistaken for a dupe! However up close blue moon has a ever so slight undertone of green, making the shade a washed out blue, leaning on the teal spectrum of colours. That sounded a lot fancier than it was supposed too, but basically, though blue moon is not as true of a blue as Ferris Wheel, I love the more washed out colour it is, and will probably be pairing this with some silver jewellery!

Which shade is your favourite? ^_^

March Favourites

march favourites the blushing giraffe

Hello Lovely People!

I don’t feel like a tonne of products have stood out to me over March because as explained in the March Update its been quite a hectic month, and a rollercoaster without a doubt. However I do want to share with you the things that did stand out to me ^_^

IMG_0265

This month quite a few of my faves have been brushes! This is because I attended two weddings, and as it had been a while since I’d been to a wedding I spent any spare time practising! Bearing in mind I didn’t have a whole heap of time, when I was able to hit the YouTube, I’ve gotta say these three have just stood out to me enormously.

IMG_0270

Two of them are from the E.L.F studio line, and honestly ladies if you’re on a budget or not, there are brushes from this line that NEED to be in your collection. I am definitely going to a TOP E.L.F Brushes post soon because when bought with one of their amazing sales you are getting a bargain and a half! Anyway the first one is the stipple brush, its light, fluffy and blends makeup like a dream.  I wouldn’t ever apply my base makeup with this because it isn’t anywhere near dense enough, however when you’ve been a little heavy handed with the blusher or highlighter, turn to this thing because in a couple of seconds it will have have sorted out the clown cheeks. Especially with sleek blushes, I ADORE them but core do they pack a punch! Next a slightly newer brush from the e.l.f studio line collection and fast becoming one of my favourites its the flawless concealer brush. I mean the name says it all, I need to say no more ladies, this blends concealer in BEAUTIFULLY. I will be buying one ore two backups for that I think!

Finally its one of the brushes from that super cheap eBay set that I reviewed HERE I’ve been enjoying all of them for blending, but this one was been a dream to work with when applying cream contour. I made a insta video demonstrating it and although the lighting is horrendous, you can see have fabulously it blends product in. I’m amazed that not a single one of those brushes have shedded, and a backup set will probably be purchased soon in the future!

This month I fell head over heels for Benefit’s erase paste in 3. The near perfect corrector shade, its creamy consistency yet amazing coverage just makes me wish they had a much larger shade range! I adore the stuff, and applied with the smallest brush from the RT core collection, it is flawless!

IMG_0281

Moving onto eyes, my first ever pigment Ore by Illamasqua has been a firm favourite. Since trying it with some MAC fix+ I have been fascinated by the colour, a deep bronze with particles of gold and just the pigmentation! wow! I think I would like to invest in some neutral pigments for special occasions because I really noticed the difference between this and a standard eyeshadow!

IMG_0259

Palettes wise Sleek’s storm and MUA’s undressed two were both getting big thumbs up from my, adore the neutrals in the MUA one (and if you’ve read my top products of 2013 you’ll know undressed one was hands down my favourite palette of the year). I don’t know how they do it, for just £4 but I am obsessed! Sleek’s palettes never do disappoint, right from my first one back when I was 16, I have quite the collection now and storm was fantastic for wedding eyes. I’ll be trying a pictorial in a few days or so of my makeup from Sunday’s wedding so keep your eye out for that!

Lastly good old hand food, I bought this back in December and its been pretty neglected for a month or two as it’s been away in storage. I’m slowly getting my new room on track and have loved applying this every time I sit down at my desk! Smells good, leaves my hands feeling pampered and I love the pump!

If you’ve done a favourites post, feel free to link it below ^_^

On My Face This Week (OMFTW) #1 | #JANBLOG 20

OMFTW1

Hello! I’ve realised that since blogging about a certain topic and committing to it on here, my little website, I am much more motivated to keep at it! So I’ve decided to start a mini series type thing, in an effort to switch up my makeup a lot more often (as I am on a spending ban..97 days to go! heh). One of the main reasons I put myself on a ban was to really make the most of the makeup I do own, so I’m hoping that each Monday I’ll post a fairly brief roundup of ‘what's on my face for the following week’ and then hopefully next week I can give you guys a mini report on what I choose to use last week! If this is confusing, hopefully it’ll make more sense as time goes on!

Also some of this stuff I’ve used once ._. and you all know how I love to do my reviews, but using a product ONCE…not good enough Iqra! I’m hoping that by using it continuously for a week or two I’ll be able to give a real feel for the stuff y’know?!

IMG_7034IMG_7038IMG_7033

For week 1 I have:

  • E.L.F HD Blush in Superstar
  • E.L.F Warm Bronzer
  • MUA Shimmer Kisses Bronzer
  • Anastasia Dip-Brow Pomade in Chocolate
  • Natural Collection Blush in Sweet Cheeks
  • Bourjois 16hr Linear Pinceau Liquid Liner in Black

The rest is pretty much standard so shouldn’t have really been in there, but as you can see I've moved this weeks stash to the top of my muji system so it’s easily accessible. Now I would normally just do one blush but I know the HD stuff can be super messy and on days where I have limited time to do my face that’s not helpful! I was going to throw in a palette too but I have another separate idea for that (aren’t I full of them these days?! o_0) soo yeah, stay tuned for next Monday to hopefully read a mini verdict!

And I’d love to know how you’ve got on with any of these if you’ve used them ^_^

The ‘I’ve had a full night’s sleep’ (but not really) essentials | #JANBLOG 13

makeup

Whilst a little bit of worrying isn’t terrible, a lot of worrying is not good news for your health. Neither is it great for your sleeping routine. I have quite a few deadlines approaching and last night I must have had about three and a half hour’s undisturbed sleep worrying about it all! Needless to say I woke up looking like a zombie and feeling much worse....thank goodness this is where make-up comes in and works it’s magic!

I thought I’d share my makeup essentials for nights which have been far from soothing -
IMG_6845

Eye’s are the tell-tell signs of lack of sleep..or vica versa! So these are the area one must attend too first.

1. A Corrector Of Some Sort. As you can see I have hit MAJOR pan on my benefit boi-ing concealer in a shade far too dark for my skin colour, but great at balancing out dark circles. It is light weight, but covers effectively and doesn't tend to cake up at all – an essential for under the eyes. Of course concealer is always used on top but without a corrector I may as well not even bother.

2. Light, Shimmery eyeshadows. My ‘go-to’ eye look is always number 1 and number 3 from the MUA undressed palette, with some of number 5 blended in the crease. By mixing a very shimmery colour with a matte nude you have a wonderful base. I of course apply a generous amount into the inner corner which reflects light away from the eyes, thus making them appear brighter, and the darker matter brown adds a tiny bit of definition! My eyelids (much like my dark circles) are pretty pigmented any way so by adding a light, bright colour it' instantly takes away the darkness and gives the illusion of wider awake eyes.

3. Rimmel Scandal’eyes liner in Nude: if you don’t own this by now, you should be asking yourself WHY NOT? It is PERFECT for making bloodshot, tired and dark eyes appear well rested. Whilst this doesn’t last longer than a couple of hours, the immediate effect it has upon the eyes and WHOLE FACE in general is amazing, and it’s cheap enough to carry around for top-ups should you wish, as losing it won’t be the end of the world!

The face can also look a little worse for wear when its sleep deprived so;

I distribute Mary Lou-Manizer (reviewed) over the tops of my cheekbones and slightly across my nose which accentuates the glowing skin and radiant look – disguising fatigue quite well.
The rest of the stuff like bronzer, blush, liquid/gel liner is generally mixed up to whatever I can reach, and usually if I'm that sleep deprived I don’t bother!

What are your staples after a late night?

Brush Series | Favourite Makeup Brushes Of All Time JANBLOG #3

Hello! A big welcome to my brush series here on The Blushing Giraffe! Make Up Brushes are an important investment, but can be incredibly dear to your bank account, so I’m doing this series in a hope to share some of my favourites and hopefully save you some money! I’ll also be doing a ‘how I clean my makeup brushes’ post as well as a ‘Top E.L.F makeup brushes’ post. Do let me know if you would like to see anything else in particular, by commenting bellow or tweeting me @blushinggiraffe.

A few decent brushes make all the difference when applying makeup, so to kick off my brush series, I’m going to share my absolute favourite brushes of all time! Now be warned, the majority of these ARE Real Techniques because they’re hard to fault! However there are some others that have made this post from cheaper and more pricier brands. I would recommend checking out THIS POST HERE in which I review several RT brushes from the limited edition collection, but I also talk about where I purchased the majority of my brushes from for a cheaper price – and what to watch out for!

Starting with the BASE here are my top favourites;

DSCN6400

I haven’t been able to take individual photos for each brush because of lack of time, but I hope you get the general idea from the above photos! Also yes they’re dirty D: I’ll be washing them as soon as there is daylight so I can photograph the procedure too.

DSCN9931DSCN9932

My favourite base brush: Real Techniques Buffing Brush the most ‘hyped’ brush in the beauty world, this is one each and every girl should invest in. It is only available to buy with the core collection (which is currently on sale for £5 off) OR whilst stocks last the limited edition kit ‘Sam’s Picks’ (reviewed here). It bristles are dense, not as much as the expert face brush, but thick enough so the product can be distributed evenly across the face. It’s rounded head means there are no foundation brush streaks down the face, and actually it feels like a mini massage when buffing it into the skin. I love the size of this brush, small enough to fit around the contours of the face, but big enough to blend the product in within a few minutes achieving a flawless base. All RT brushes are made from cruelty free synthetic hair which is ridiculously soft to touch and easy to wash. They dry faster than other brushes and I’ve experienced NO shedding – good quality or what?! The last thing to say about this brush is essentially it can be used for anything, bronzer, blusher, powder, cream and liquid which makes it SO versatile!

The largest brush in the cute little Ikea candleholder is the Real Techniques Powder Brush. It is my bronzer and overall setting brush of choice. It is HUGE and so takes all of 5 seconds to set your makeup which is brilliant for the morning! As I have normal/dry skin I rarely choose to set my makeup with a powder (unless it’s going through a random oily phase). So for me this is perfect for bronzing, doing a loose three motion on either side of the face and finishing with a little ‘bop’ on my nose, gives me a perfectly sunkissed glow and adds colour and life to my face. Because it is so big, fluffy and not dense it doesn’t apply a concentrated amount to any area of the face, making it great for distributing powder evenly.

Next is the Real Techniques Setting Brush which has also made my ultimate beauty favourites of 2013 post. It is wonderful for blending in concealer, due to it’s tapered point which fits right in edges corners and awkward sides in the face. I personally use this on the daily with my Ben Nye Banana Powder (reviewed here) rather than using a damp sponge, because I find it doesn’t PACK powder on, it instead manages to apply the perfect amount needed (not causing cakiness!).  The Multi-task Brush is probably one of the most useful brushes one could own (for obvious reasons). I personally use this consistently for blusher, as it isn’t too round/wide and it’s elongated shape means you can sweep this above the contour liner for a precise application of colour. However it’s similar to the buffing brush, because you could use this for highlighting, bronzing, cream products etc. The main difference being the shape. A great travelling brush to have for sure!

DSCN6412

Now on to the eye brushes, and you can see it’s not a Real Techniques party over here..
So starting with the left and moving clockwise we have the Real Techniques Base Shadow Brush which is included in the starter kit collection and is one of the good ‘uns. It’s soft and easy to apply colour all over the lid with this because of its little point so you can reach the inner corners and even brush some shadow under the lower lash line if its not too much of a dark shade!

Next we have a spoolie from MUA, which I never really thought was essential,  but I picked this up for next to nothing and now I love using it those days I’ve done a little over the top with the brow gel! A few quick brushes through and your brows are looking filled in but much more natural – not scary and overpowering!!

The middle needs NO introduction! It’s the 217 and honestly it has changed the way I do my eye makeup! It’s the perfect brush, and a travel and daily essential. You can use it to put colour in the lid, to blend out harsh lines, to merge colours together. It really is a fantastic brush and I 100% understand why so many people rave about this. There are plenty of dupes (some good, some awful) but little comes close to this brush, and I find it washes extremely well too.

The E.L.F Small Angled Brush is the best brush I have ever used on my brows. It is small enough to fill in the gaps precisely (not like that thick RT brush!) but can also spread colour through the brows and keep them looking natural and neat. Having a decent brow brush is especially important for people who don’t shape their brows using tweezers, threading etc. as filling in the brows is the only thing that keeps them looking in order!

And finally I have the E.L.F Angled Eyeliner Brush (I have two of this and the above brush). It is the BEST brush ever for applying gel eyeliner, especially if you’re a bit weary of liner. The ‘angle’ of this brush means that it is simple to apply the liner and you don’t have to twist your arms in awkward angles to get a consistent line. I also think the amount of bristle and the length of bristles in this brush are just right (that probably sounds a little odd but if you’ve tried to use a flimsy brush for eyeliner before you’ll understand!

That concludes my all time favourites for the start of 2014! These brushes are used almost every-time I apply makeup, and if I was forced to give up the majority of my brushes, those would be the ones I’d keep!

Review | MUA – 'Ever After' Matte Palette

mua matte palette

Hello lovelies!

I’ve been meaning to post this review for a while, but I’ve been so disorganised with taking photos and what with the clocks going back and less sunlight I need to start planning ahead more! Not complaining about the cooler weather though - sweater weather is better weather tehe

Anyways, this is another one of MUA’s fantastic palettes available at ridiculously affordable prices – costing you a mere £4. It consists of 10 shades, all of which are matte which is very rare in most palettes, but I’m pretty sure it’s the only one of it’s kind in the drugstore world (bar one or two of the Sleek ones). I was verrrrrry excited when I got the e-mail about it’s launch and as they had another promo on, I bought myself this palette and a second for the giveaway! (keep your eyes peeled for the next few days).

So packaging wise, instead of having round circular pots you have larger squares, but other than that it is the standard plastic packaging with a clear lid so you can see all the shades. You get 1g of each shade, and it is mainly a neutrals palette with a dusky pink and a ‘foggy’ blue included aswell. It actually looks pretty similar to the ‘undressed’ palette but of course with no shimmer to it.

I find the shades to be soft and easy to apply. One slight disappointment is that the top row is a little less pigmented than the bottom row, as you can see from the swatches -  it seemed nothing I could do would make the shades appear on my arm! On my eye however the top shades work perfectly as bases, I especially love unwrap as a under the brow highlight (who wants sparkly under brow highlight for a work/uni look?? not me!)

I adore fade because a decent matte brown as the transition  colour is essential in pulling any eye makeup look together, but from experience I find matte browns to be either too pigmented meaning it takes too long to blend when in a rush, or very very faint. This shade seems to hit the nail right on the head and I’m loving it.

Did I even swatch FADE?? I think I forgot silly me ._. sorry for the bad lighting here!
Please don't let the top swatches fool you, on my lids they show up fine (perhaps its because I use a decent base/primer?) and if they showed up on my lids as they are in the swatches (i.e if they didn't show up at all!) I wouldn't be impressed at all with this palette!

The swatches do all the talking as far as the bottom row is concerned, they’re all outstanding in pigmentation (I only swiped once or twice with the bottom row) and help to create subtle smoky eye, or just add more definition in the crease. I love using darker shadows lightly under the lash line because I find black liner on the bottom to be too full-on for day-to-day but by using shadows it softens the look.

All in all I really do think this is a palette every girl should have in her collection, simply because soo many palettes out there lack some decent matte shades and this has around four browns alone and lots of lovely neutral shades – for only four quid! I like to keep this palette beside the one i’m currently using and I find it great for adding that extra bit of detail. Or a super simple look with one of the lighter shades washed over the lid, a smidgen of one of the browns in the crease and some liner and I’m good to go!

You can purchase this from superdrug, via the superdrug website or of course the MUA website (HERE)

Do you like mattes on the lids?

Review | MUA Blusher ‘bonbon’

bon bon blusher MUA
Hello!
I’m sure many of you have heard of MUA’s Blusher range, and maybe some of you may have been uncertain on whether it’s worth buying such a cheap product, like I was too. A few months ago I picked up this shade (one from their newest range) partly because the name was so adorable bonbon and partly because I was curious as to if they’re any good and I loved it so much I went ahead and added candyfloss and cupcake to my collection too!

MUA BON BON BLUSHER REVIEW

The packaging is a simple rectangular plastic pan, with a clear lid ideal for storage to pick the right colour out straight away, but certainly nothing special. ‘MUA’ is imprinted into the blush itself, and it has a small clip like contraption (you can see the hole bit) to keep it secure which makes popping one of these in your makeup bag that little bit easier as the chance of it opening and smoshing against everything else is a lot less (TAKES A DEEP BREATH) The cost is £1 and there are 12 shades in the range (six new ones for 2013) which I think is phenomenal for a drugstore brand! There must be a colour for every single skin tone out there and at one pound a pop and 2.4g of product, they’re more than affordable.

MUA BON BON BLUSHER REVIEW

The colour bon bon is actually darker looking in the pan that the photo has shown, and with just one sweep of your brush you have more than enough for both cheeks and a third if you’re not careful! (read – VERY PIGMENTED) I find this easiest to apply with a fluffy brush, concentrating the first sweepmid cheek rather than on the apples of my cheeks because the colour can look too intense too quickly! It’s a lovely middlish pink colour, and a nice change from the more peachy tones that I tend to favour. WHICH is another reason why these are brilliant, if you want to invest in a high-end blush but aren’t sure about the tone why not pick up the closest swatch are try it out?

MUA BON BON BLUSHER REVIEW

As you can see they are easy to build up, but look beautiful blended out. The lasting power is great, I’m not one to carry around makeup for touch-ups (other than lip stuff of course) but these last nicely! So to conclude (....you can tell I’ve not written a blog post for a whole week – damn you swollen eyelids) these are perfect for anyone on a budget, the shade range is brilliant, as is the pigmentation and they are well worth your pennies! If I ever want to pick up a MAC blusher (I own none as of yet) then I’ll certainly try to find a shade from the MUA collection that matches and test it out first :) Though I’ve not tried the much loved essence blushers these are reminiscent of those at an equally bargainlicious price – chaching!

Pros:
  • huge shade selection
  • brilliant/unbeatable price!
  • soft powder
  • fantastic pigmentation
Cons:
  • cheap packaging that isn’t spectacular (but it does the job so this is a bit of an unfair con)
  • can be easy to over apply this particular shade if heavy handed
