NOTD– dotty for dots

Hello! This is just a quick little NOTD, featuring Barry M’s matte polish in Vanilla, which is strangely more of an off-white/lilac shade than anything remotely vanilla. I am a huggggge fan of Barry M so I was ultra excited to try these out. However when I painted my nails using just this polish they looked like this:
barry m vanilla matte nail polish
(As always do excuse my manly hands, rough cuticles and uneven nails..what can I say..I have little patience for pampering my hands ._. plus..it’s winter ok)

hmm. Slightly TOO plain and…flat you know? I dug out my wonderful ‘dotting tools’ purchased from Amazon: Set of 5 Multi Coloured Swirl Double Ended Nail Art Dotting/Marbleizing tools

for a ridiculously affordable price(LESS THAN £1.20!!), and I took out my most favourite shade of Nail polish EVER Barry M’s ‘cappuccino’ and got to work.

I say got to work as if this took my longer than 5 minutes, it’s the easiest thing to do! put a dollop of polish onto a card and dip the chosen dotter in..and get to dotting! I can’t think of a simpler way to jazz up your nails a little yourself, and really cannot recommend these tools enough.

I know I’m not at all creative enough to buy a nail brush set, but these 5,  between them provide more than enough for anyone to get creative (check out my summer roses!)

Also the contrast between the matte and the normal looks sooo chic, I don’t think the camera QUITE picked up how chic it looks, but I assure you it looks a lot more professional than using two normal polishes haha.

When was the last time you jazzed up your mani?

(I’m seriously resisting the temptation to dollop glitter polish all over them…clearly I don’t do minimalism well)

Review | Fashionista Eyeshadows #3 Chocolate Dream, Bliss, Berry Brown, and Brave

I won’t even talk about how long I’ve had these on my ‘to-blog list’ (which by the way is a list longer than my arm!) So today I' m going to be reviewing the next four shades of shadows from my Fashionista collection, and I hope this post is useful to anyone looking to buy them! To check out the first post where I go into lots of detail about prices, places to buy etc.; click HERE and for the second batch of swatches click HERE

fashionista eyeshadows bliss chocolate dream brave berry brown

So from the four that I’ll be talking about today, brave is the only matte shade (or as close to a matte as fashionista will venture) and I should point out that my camera kindly made chocolate dream appear silver..it’s far more brown!

fashionista eyeshadows bliss chocolate dream brave berry brown

These swatches above were done with only one swipe, and as you can see they packed a punch! I have however used two swipes for the below swatches because you can see the colour a little clearer, but I honestly have no complaints with pigmentation from any of these.

fashionista eyeshadow swatches berry brown and chocolate dream
fashionista eyeshadow swatches berry brown and chocolate dream

Starting with the two browns from this quad I need to first point out how wrong they've got with the names of both the browns- the darkest brown is no where near a chocolate colour, more like a deep grey with a hint of brown. It's not quite as pigmented as some of the others but this works to my advantage when creating a smoky eye for example as it's easier to blend and build up. It's a nice colour to add to my neutrals palette but I'm not blown away by this one as you can still see little silver speckles in the shadow and it's a shade you could probably find in another palette. Overall i rate this a 3/5 it does it's job well, but it's not stunning. However it will be a shade that I'll end up using quite a lot I can imagine so no regrets for blindly picking this one! (Though I was slightly hoping for a rich matte chocolate colour ._.)

fashionista eyeshadow swatches berry brown

Next up is my favourite of this group berry brown. I swatches this on my arm and couldn't stop admiring it, honestly it's stunning but again the name is very misleading (ain't no berry here yo!) it is best described as a deeper copper shade, with some of the softest and creamiest formulation I have come across. You only need one swipe for stunning pigmentation and it's the kind of shade that would complement brown, green and blue eyes a real shade that everyone should own and one of my most favourite shadows from my fashionista collection. The subtle yet gorgeous gold undertone looks soo very pretty and its definitely one that I'll be introducing to my daily makeup! I rate this one 5/5 in terms of colour, pigmentation, ease of blending and versatility!

fashionista eyeshadow swatches bliss

Bliss which is shade 27 is by far my least favourite shade. It's a frosty pink which in all honesty will get little use from me. As mentioned several times the little squares they give for swatches are extremely hard to judge by, and I'd have left this one is seeing them in store, however if you're looking for a shimmery  pink shade then this is the one for you! The more you build it up the more pink comes through but I still find due to its silver under/overtones that it's a tough one to get a lot of use out of and ultimately that's what everyone wants from their makeup so I'd have to score this for me personally a 1.5 (no complaints on the formula at all I have I add and it's one of the creamier ones- think urban decay quality)

fashionista eyeshadow swatches brave

And finally we have brave a name which they have actually got right because it is a the brightest mattest pink eyeshadow I own! Not quite as creamy as the others but this is completely expected as it's the most mattest shade I own from the fashionista range and I'm impressed! I wish there was some distinction on the site between the mattes, shimmer and pearlescent shades as I'd love to get my mits on more of the mattes but alas no such luck... Anyways it is a stunning pink shade, which I feel is comparable to higher end brands because of its pigmentation, without a primer or a base this goes on so bright and although I won't get a ton of use out of such a bright colour I don't regret picking this up because it could be mighty useful in the future (think Asian wedding and bright bright colours) I rate this a 3.5/5

bottom line is: to any girl out there who applies eyeshadow ever, you’re missing out big time if you don’t go ahead and make yourself on of these palettes, the price and QUALITY is phenomenal for drugstore!! The shadows are £1.65 each and the palettes are super affordable too – do check out my first two fashionista posts for more colours and a fuller overview :)

Review | Seventeen Phwoarr Paint in Medium

phwoarr paint

Now being a beauty blogger I believe it is my duty to tell people about all the cosmetics and beauty products I’ve used, the great, the good and the not so brilliant. I’m the type of girl who reads reviews for 90% of the makeup I’m deciding to buy before I go ahead and purchase it. So I rely on those reviews that talk honestly about the not so great products! (ok this intro is far too long now..)

ANYWAYS so a few weeks ago I picked up this concealer. There wasn’t a massive buzz about it, but the reviews that I had read from some of my favourite bloggers promised great things and I’m always on the hunt for dark-circle banishing concealers.

seventeen Phwoarr Paint Medium

Unfortunately the first thing that let’s this down is the shade selection – there are only TWO. I just cannot understand why drugstore brands do not take into account the large variety of skin tones! Furthermore, the medium shade which I picked up is great if you’re an NC25 perhaps, but far too light for my NC35-NC37 skin tone.

seventeen Phwoarr Paint Medium

I’m quite absent minded when it comes to paying attention with what brands claim their products can and will do, but because I was quite looking forwards to trying this and there aren't many drugstore concealers just for dark circles, I read all the great stuff and now I want to tell you how I feel this product lives up to it’s claims.

seventeen Phwoarr Paint Medium swatch

So it claims to ‘Wage war on under eye circles’ and as you can see from the above swatch it is salmon in colour. Because my main skin issue is my dark circles I’m constantly reading up on ways to get rid of the darkness, and many of you will know that correctors in peach or salmon tones are perfect for correcting the darkness. Salmon however does nothing for my darker circles and I am currently using a dark orange/peach tone from benefit. So yes this could work for you if you’re lighter in skin tone and your dark under eye circles aren’t a huge issue, but what frustrated me is the ‘light’ version of this should have been salmon and the ‘medium’ should be peach, as most people with medium skin tones have more yellow undertones and therefore salmon is pretty useless!

seventeen Phwoarr Paint Medium

Instead of waging war on dark circles, it makes the area look ashy and highlights it so much so that I have to put a darker powder ontop to get rid of the white/ashy tone. Next this stuff is THICK. It’s creamy to touch in the pan, but far too easy to pick up too much and then struggle with the thickness of it under the eyes.  It isn’t easy to blend as seventeen claims, and I sometimes find myself tugging around my eyes to move the concealer about. Next issue is because of the consistency, putting any type of powder ontop will instantly cake and crease! Who wants that under their eyes?!

seventeen Phwoarr Paint Medium

The good stuff is the packaging, they at least got this part right. It comes in a sleek little round circular pot, and I the little mirror inside is pretty useful for on the go touch-ups. There is a fairly sturdy clasp like system on the pot which is secure enough to not have to worry about coming undone.

seventeen Phwoarr Paint Medium

You get 12g for £5.49 so the price is great, but I won’t ever be repurchasing this and struggled to find a use for it as I just cannot make it work for me. If you’re darker than NC35 or that skin tone, I’d advise you to save your money and go for the collection lasting perfection concealer, which is really creamy, heavy duty yet flawless looking for under the eyes if you have super dark circles! It also isn’t so thick that it couldn’t be used with a corrector shade underneath – something phwoarr paint struggled with. If dark circles aren’t a huge issue go for something even lighter!

I’m waiting patiently for the day when high-street brands open their eyes and realise that there are more skin tones than white and slightly tan, and hopefully they can start catering for all women of colour (take a leaf out of Sleek’s book!) I’m also in no way dismissing this brand, their ‘mirror shine’ lippies are a firm favourite of mine, but this just did not and can not work for me.

What are your favourite undereye circle saviours?

E.L.F Haul

e.l.f haul

I just could not resist a 50% off haul from e.l.f…mainly because in their last one a lot of the things I wanted were out of stock, and I always rave about their 50% off because everything is such brilliant value! Yes some things can be a little hit and miss but the majority of the time I do a quick google search of fellow blogger’s reviews and if a particular item is consistently being rated negatively…clearly I’d not waste monies on it :) My favourite line is the studio one without a doubt, but I adore the mineral line’s lip products – they can do little wrong!

DSCN8734

Starting with brushes (all £3.75 full price), I picked up two that I already own the angled eyeliner brush and the small angled brush both two essentials. I adore the latter for brows as the only other brow brush I own is the real technique ones and unless you’ve got amazingly thick ‘uns it’s tricky to them filled in without going over the top/making them look unnatural. The two new brushes in my collection are the eyeshadow C brush which I really like the look of, it seems like an awesome shader brush. I also bought the complexion brush which was the one that’s been on my list for the longest time so I'm looking forwards to giving it a whirl!

DSCN8742

With lips I went slightly doo-lalay over the Mineral line lipsticks (£5 full price)..I already own the shades Rosy Raisin and Party Pink and the pigmentation, quality and feel on the lips for a mere £2.50 (with 50% of course) makes them some of the bestest drugstore lippies around. As ever I am always on the hunt for beautiful nude shades so I picked up the lighter pinks in nicely nude and runaway pink. I then proceeded to add a bit more colour, especially for the current season so I bought cheerful cherry and beautiful berry (yay for rhyming). I plan to do a whole post dedicated to these beauties as I really do think they’re under-rated on the blogosphere!

I adore these Mineral Lip Tints (£3.50 full price), not least because they include an spf and beautiful pigmentation! I bought a back up for one of my favourite nude/lighter shades ever – guava and I also bought berry. Finally I THINK I saw this on a youtuber and loved how it looked on here, so I picked up on the of the conditioning lip balms (£3.75 full price) and with an even higher SPF of 15 in the shade nice and natural.

DSCN8744

For the face I picked up this warm bronzer (£3.75) which is one of their oldest studio line products I believe, and it probably wasn’t a necessary purchase, but recently I just cannot stop buying bronzers (somebody help me!!) I then popped the contouring blush and bronzing cream (£3.75) into my basket because the idea of layering your contour for special occasions was too prominent in my mind to ignore. Plus, though I’m sure this one isn’t mooseish in texture, the bourjois bronzing primer is such a nifty and natural looking product for contouring I couldn’t resist this offer.

DSCN8747

I bought this eyebrow kit in medium (£3.75), mainly because I’ve heard such good things about it, and also because at less than £2 with the discount it would have been rude not too!

DSCN8746

I also managed to get one of these gorgeous HD blushers (£3.75), which look MESSY! but I've been wanting to try them for months, so hopefully the shade superstar will turn out good – it did seem like the best me shade of the bunch but we shall put it through it’s paces before a detailed review!

So that was my splurge of an e.l.f haul! A couple of things probably didn’t NEED to be in the basket but these 50% off sales are too good to miss, although I’ve put all the prices in full above – HALF PRICE is just phenomenal to try out these goodies, a lot of which are probably worth a good deal more!

I know I wasn’t the only blogger out there jumping to eyelipsface.co.uk so please link your e.l.f haul below I’d love to have a read! What are your favourite e.l.f products?

Review | MUA – 'Ever After' Matte Palette

mua matte palette

Hello lovelies!

I’ve been meaning to post this review for a while, but I’ve been so disorganised with taking photos and what with the clocks going back and less sunlight I need to start planning ahead more! Not complaining about the cooler weather though - sweater weather is better weather tehe

Anyways, this is another one of MUA’s fantastic palettes available at ridiculously affordable prices – costing you a mere £4. It consists of 10 shades, all of which are matte which is very rare in most palettes, but I’m pretty sure it’s the only one of it’s kind in the drugstore world (bar one or two of the Sleek ones). I was verrrrrry excited when I got the e-mail about it’s launch and as they had another promo on, I bought myself this palette and a second for the giveaway! (keep your eyes peeled for the next few days).

MUA Matte Palette

So packaging wise, instead of having round circular pots you have larger squares, but other than that it is the standard plastic packaging with a clear lid so you can see all the shades. You get 1g of each shade, and it is mainly a neutrals palette with a dusky pink and a ‘foggy’ blue included aswell. It actually looks pretty similar to the ‘undressed’ palette but of course with no shimmer to it.

MUA MATTE PALETTE labelled

I find the shades to be soft and easy to apply. One slight disappointment is that the top row is a little less pigmented than the bottom row, as you can see from the swatches -  it seemed nothing I could do would make the shades appear on my arm! On my eye however the top shades work perfectly as bases, I especially love unwrap as a under the brow highlight (who wants sparkly under brow highlight for a work/uni look?? not me!)

I adore fade because a decent matte brown as the transition  colour is essential in pulling any eye makeup look together, but from experience I find matte browns to be either too pigmented meaning it takes too long to blend when in a rush, or very very faint. This shade seems to hit the nail right on the head and I’m loving it.

Mua matte palette swatches
Did I even swatch FADE?? I think I forgot silly me ._. sorry for the bad lighting here!
Please don't let the top swatches fool you, on my lids they show up fine (perhaps its because I use a decent base/primer?) and if they showed up on my lids as they are in the swatches (i.e if they didn't show up at all!) I wouldn't be impressed at all with this palette!

The swatches do all the talking as far as the bottom row is concerned, they’re all outstanding in pigmentation (I only swiped once or twice with the bottom row) and help to create subtle smoky eye, or just add more definition in the crease. I love using darker shadows lightly under the lash line because I find black liner on the bottom to be too full-on for day-to-day but by using shadows it softens the look.

All in all I really do think this is a palette every girl should have in her collection, simply because soo many palettes out there lack some decent matte shades and this has around four browns alone and lots of lovely neutral shades – for only four quid! I like to keep this palette beside the one i’m currently using and I find it great for adding that extra bit of detail. Or a super simple look with one of the lighter shades washed over the lid, a smidgen of one of the browns in the crease and some liner and I’m good to go!

You can purchase this from superdrug, via the superdrug website or of course the MUA website (HERE)

Do you like mattes on the lids?

Review | Ben Nye Banana Powder

ben nye

This has been a favourite of mine for quite a few months now, infact it’s become the kind of product that I find myself thinking ‘how did I manage without this before when doing my makeup??’ and most certainly if I had to pick 5 items from my collection to keep forever, this would be on that list!

I’m sure many people heard about Ben Nye’s Banana Powder from Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist raving about it and let’s face it, no matter what you think of the soon to be Mrs West, she sure does manage to look flawless almost all the time - with contouring and highlighting done to perfection! This received so much hype on YouTube, and though I’m not always one to jump on the bandwagon, I am so so very pleased I did with this one!

I’m going to try and structure this review a little differently so do let me know what you think, just fancied a little change ^_^

DSCN8591

what is it?

Essentially it is a finely milled yellow powder, suitable for use all over the face, but mainly under the eyes and for highlighting. The yellow colour will not do much for those who have strong pink tones in their skin, but for people with yellow undertones who struggle with dark circles, it is a little lifesaver! I have struggled with dark circles from mid-teens till now, due to a huge range of issues (but mainly genetics and insomnia too) so for me it has worked wonders. Ben Nye has a range of colours available, and there is bound to be one to cater to your skintone, however the banana powder tends to work fine for light/medium and ever slightly deeper shades.

DSCN8602

What is so special about it?

The beautiful thing about this powder is, not only does it sets your concealer and prevents it from caking/creasing, but it also adds coverage too! It disguises the dark circles with it’s counter-acting yellow tones (much like the salmon/peach coloured correctors). The main difference between the salmon/peach colour and the yellow colour is that yellow is also brightening, so this covers and brightens rather than just disguising the dark under eye circles. I’ve tried normal powder under the eyes (Rimmel stay matte) and elf’s HD powder, but nothing beats Ben Nye’s Banana powder!

DSCN8594

Packaging

This stuff isn’t packaged in the most glamorous way imaginable, it is simply in a clear plastic bottle with a black lid and holes through the top of the bottle, similar to that of baby powder. However it is easy to sprinkle a little into the lid, and the excess powder easily goes back into the bottle. It is a little bit messy, but never an issue.

The initial purpose of this was for stage makeup! To be worn under harsh lighting conditions and therefore you can imagine the least of Ben Nye’s worries were to make his bottle look extraordinary! Does the function, and the powder pays for itself so no problem to me :)

DSCN8606

How do I apply it?

Now as I have mentioned, my dark circles are my biggest insecurity and though I don’t mind going out without concealer on, I feel a lot more comfortable with the pesky darks covered up! So because of this it is really important for me to use products that provide as much coverage as possible whilst still looking natural. I start with a peachy toned concealer (currently using Benefit’s boi-ing in shade 3 but lusting after Bobbi Brown’s corrector!!!) and pat lightly under the eyes. This instantly corrects the darkness. Then I dab a little of Collection’s lasting perfection, in whichever shade I have lying around. For some this is too thick for under the eyes, but for me it is perfect. After using my ring finger to blend/pat that in gently, I take my banana powder, and with a Real Techniques setting brush (tapping it on the side of my table so it’s not overloaded) I gently pat the brush under my eyes, and the with sweeping and patting motions set the excess powder in. Et voila! Happily covered up dark circles = happy Iqra!

Where to buy it from?
It can be a little tricky to get hold of, I know amazon sometimes have it in stock, though when checking online for this review, I have seen it being sold at extortionate prices! Having just checked my amazon order history, the seller I bought it from is no longer selling :( so I would recommend this online store (LINK) where the price is very reasonable (not too sure about delivery costs though!)

Overall:
Worth the hype? Definitely!
Essential for everyone? No. If you don’t suffer with dark circles, you’ll be fine using a normal powder to set concealer or even the translucent one they do. As I mentioned those who are very experienced with makeup use this powder as a highlighter all around the face (check YouTube for some pretty scary looking screenshots!) but personally I would only attempt that for a really special occasion, and even then I’d be hesitant!
Value for money? Without a doubt
Product rating : 10/10
Pros: Adds coverage, whilst setting concealer to last all day so no need to worry about touch ups. Doesn’t look cakey. You get a large amount for what you pay for. It is multi-functional (what’s not to love about that??) It makes covering dark circles up a lot easier!
Cons: It can be quite messy…that’s about it!
