A beginner’s guide to Cleansing

a beginners guide to cleansing

One of the best things about starting a beauty blog for me, has been the drastic change in my skincare routine. Or actually making a skincare routine at all! At the very start of 2014 one of my goals was to make a routine and stick to it – for the most part I have! ^_^ I’ve also done a lot of reading on skin, learning what’s what and what to avoid and I thought it would be useful to dedicate a post to cleansing. This is mainly aimed at people who’ve never thought about skincare before, whether you’re 12 or 20 I hope this is somewhat useful for you!

So generally there is no real rules with makeup BUT skincare does have some DOS and DON’Ts. Let us start with the stuff you should avoid.

DON’Ts

Don’t -Use soap to wash your face:
I don’t know about you, but as a child I was always asked to wash my face and hands with soap – not a good idea! Soap strips the skin of it’s natural oils, which leave it feeling uncomfortably tight and dry. It’s said to be as harsh as using a detergent on your facial skin! (which is the most delicate obviously) and so it’s great for cleaning the body but it does absolutely nothing to protect the body. Bottom line – soap isn’t suitable for facial use.

Don’t - Purchase a Cleanser that contains Parabens
I’m not going to pretend I’m all clued up on chemicals and preservatives and that everything I use on my skin is chemical free – not true (and technically almost impossible). However I do try and steer clear of parabens within my skincare. What exactly are parabens? They are preservatives that prolong the shelf limit of cosmetics, skincare, shampoos etc.; Ok so here is the thing, there is a lot of anguish and hatred towards these parabens, however I have found an interesting article on this all being a MYTH or at least somewhat exaggerated by the media: read it here. For this reason, I don’t mind using makeup that contains parabens because makeup is put on the face, and later thoroughly removed. It is not permanent or rubbed in, and if you imagine the TINY proportion of parabens per ‘pump’ or ‘sweep of an eyeshadow’ you can understand why I don’t really think of them as being dangerous or harmful to the skin.

However some people believe that Parabens can be a cause for cancerous tumours, whereas the FDA have approved them to be safe thus far. Lets just say this will be a always be a debate and some people choose to go all natural in everything, others like myself take it with a pinch of salt. That being said I do prefer to buy skincare that contains as little chemicals as possible because with moisturisers and lotions you’re rubbing them into the skin and the less chemicals rubbed in the better. So in short, it’s probably better to purchase a cleanser that is paraben free, or from a brand that strictly regulates the amount of parabens used. Some of my favourites include REN Skincare,LUSH and a new one: Green People Organic Lifestyle Gentle Cleanse & Make-up Remover* which I took with me on a weekend away and was thoroughly impressed with how well it dissolved the make-up from my skin and left it feeling very clean and equally as soft.

Don’t - Over-cleanse

It can be quite easy to become slightly obsessed with removing all dirt and grime from the face if you start reading about the types of bacteria our skin encounters on a daily basis! However over-cleansing is the biggest cause of sensitive skin as it completely strips the skin’s underlayers of its natural protective properties – so yeah cleansing is important but try not to over-do it!

OK now enough of the don’ts, lets get to what you SHOULD be doing!

DO’S OF CLEANSING

Do - Determine your skin type
Make sure you know which category your skin lies in. Is it oily, normal, sensitive, dry or combination? If you understand what skin-type you have, you can look into products that will be best suited to you. Since starting and sticking to a skincare routine my skin which was more on the dry side has become normal-dry which just goes to show giving you face some tlc can really pay off! Also if you know your skintype you can select a cleanser that will work well (gel cleansers are best to void if you have dry skin as they do tend to leave the skin feeling tight, on the other hand oil and balm cleansers can be amazing because even when you’ve washed your face, your skin is left soft and feeling nourished.
This website here is a fantastic tool to help you with determining your skin type if you’re unsure!

Do - Stick to water soluble cleansers
Micellar cleaning waters have taken the world by storm, and yes they are pretty awesome for removing makeup gently and effectively. However they should always be used as part of a double cleanse, with your second cleanser being a facial wash or other type of cleanser that involves giving you face a good wash and getting rid of all remaining dirt, makeup and micellar solution.

Do - Exfoliate at least once a week
Everyday we ‘shed’ skin cells and the build up of these can cause clogged pores, which in turn can lead to breakouts and other blemishes. If you have dry skin, weekly exfoliation will help to smooth out the skin and reduce dry patches. You can buy exfoliating scrubs for a couple of quid, and as long as they aren't too harsh and you are massaging it into the skin GENTLY you will notice a great difference from the first exfoliation. I used to use St Ives peaches very often, but over time I found it because a bit too harsh for my skin, so then I switched to clean and clear which has smaller granules and I was very impressed with how soft my face felt afterwards! Not to mention how squeaky clean it looked too!

Those are just a few pointed that I think EVERYONE should know, and try to follow through. Whether you wear makeup everyday, once a week or once in a blue moon – skincare is always worth taking the time out to do – and if you make it into a routine, by cleansing your skin properly you could notice a real difference :)

Thanks for reading!

Review | REN Rosa Centifolia Cleansing Gel

REN Rosa Centifolia Cleansing Gel | LINK | £14.00

Hello lovely people! I didn’t do a weekly round up, because most of the things I’ve been wearing whilst having a cold are on my last post. Instead I wanted to talk to you about this cleanser that I have been using on and off for a good couple of weeks now :)
ren centifolia cleansing gel review

I purchased this from ASOS (using the student discount of course) and the RRP is £17. Now this isn’t exactly drugstore price, but I had read a couple of reviews to do with REN skincare and not one bad word did I come across! You get 150ml, and it has a pump, making it convenient. The packaging is very minimal and I’m sure that is to do with the brands policy of clean skincare.

Essentially it contains no parabens, sulphates, mineral oil, petrolatum…etc. All REN skincare is formulated with floral extracts and rich essential oils. Whilst I am no expert in what to avoid when it comes to skincare, I do know that when I read the brand’s ethos I was very happy!

This cleanser is VERY light weight and the way to apply is to rub the cleanser between hands, massage onto the face and then rinse off. Quite a lot of product does come out with one pump. As it is so lightweight, it’s not the most deep cleansing and so if you only used this at the end of the day, your makeup probably wouldn’t be 100% off and you wouldn’t be getting a thorough clean that leave skin feeling squeaky clean. I was sort of disappointed with this at first because when skincare wasn’t a priority, I expected this to work wonders. However since using a micellar water regularly (this one right here) which removes a load of my makeup this cleanser is much better at doing its job. Having said that, because it is so lightweight in texture, I prefer using this one in the morning occasionally rather than adding it in as a THIRD step after the MCW and cream/balm cleanser.

At night I like my skin to feel thoroughly nourished, something which is only really achievable with a hot cloth cleanser, cream cleanser or balm cleanser. I also find that it can be a tad drying to the skin, as it’s aimed at normal skin types. However I have been using this for a while and have at least 70% of the product left so it does last a while!

All in all, I love this for a refreshing cleanse, and I use it either in the morning, or on no-makeup days when I just want a fuss free quick cleanse of the skin. Sometimes you just don’t have the time or energy to be faffing around with flannels and massaging products into the skin, so on days like those this works a treat. I have enjoyed it as my first every REN cleanser, but I think next up I will be trying the cream version of this, and also more of the products that are for dryer skin :)

Final Verdict:
Product rating: 7.5
Pros: Cleanses quickly, is lightweight, has a pump, fragrance free, free from lots of harmful chemicals.
Cons: Can be a little drying
Repurchase? I probably won’t repurchase this particular one, but I am going to be buying more REN in the future! In my opinion to steeper price tag is justified because of the lack of harmful products within the cleanser.

Thankyou for reading! I hope this was helpful ^_^

Review | Boots Botanics Hot Cloth Cleansing Balm | #JANBLOG 10

Boots botanics hot cloth cleansing balm review swatch

Hello beautiful people!

So a while back I picked up this hot cloth cleanser, partly because I was curious if it would be as effective as the superdrug own brand one (reviewed here) and mainly because I needed a proper cleanser - I had gotten into the habit of just using micellar water which is almost the same as using a makeup wipe one and certainly not the best thing for your skin (but better than nothing I suppose..D:) The beautiful Amelia from liana-beauty.com had also recommended this during her skincare work shop at the smoky-not-smudgy event and I’d made a note of it on my phone, so when I saw it on sale a few weeks later I was pretty chuffed to pick it up!

It is currently £6.49 (usually around £9) but I also picked this up when it was on special offer so keep an eye out! The Botanics range from boots is centred around ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ products. Now I’m not massively fussed over natural cosmetics and skincare, but do know that where possible if it works well for me I’d rather use the less chemical filled stuff and go gentler on my skin. I was also very excited to try a balm as they seem to have become all the rage within the beauty world (the Clique take the day off balm is loved by thousands!). However as high-end products tend to be ridiculously priced, with some balms costing you around the £40 mark it’s fantastic to see high-street brands making GOOD yet affordable versions!

Reading the back of the box and seeing the wonderful ingredients such as ‘shea butter; and ‘jojoba oil’ you’d expect to be left with skin feeling soft and smooth. I have normal/dry skin anyway but during these colder months, I start to get dry patches on my cheeks and around my eyes and it’s really not pleasant in the slightest. So anything oil based or richer in formula is welcomed with open arms. I’ll get down to my experience in due course but first of all I must warn you that this does have quite a distinct herbal smell. When I first used it I was a little taken aback, for some reason expecting it to be fragrance free, but it’s not a BAD smell as such, just a distinctive one. Some people find it relaxing, other (like myself) could do without it, but from my experience with this so far the pros outweigh the smell!

The cloth included isn’t brilliant, and for anyone with even slightly sensitive skin I’d advise against using it. I find muslin cloths in general to be quite abrasive for the skin, and considering the amount we put it through already, using a less than gentle cloth to cleanse probably doesn’t do it much favours.

DSCN0047

Now on to my experience, as it is a balm it comes in a solid form. I was also slightly taken aback by the colour, which you will see in the photo below looks somewhat daunting! However it is all about the organic so I just went with it! You take a little of the balm out and I liked to ever so slightly warm it up between my fingers, before applying onto my skin. Now 7/10 times I will have removed my makeup already using the L'Oreal micellar water, however this works fine over makeup too if you cannot be bothered to double cleanse. As you massage it into your skin, you’ll feel the balm melt and start working its organic goodness all over the face. It’s actually a really relaxing feeling! I have gotten over the scent and started looking forwards to this aspect of my evening when I get to give myself a little pampering!

DSCN0050

edit, the lighting in this photo is HORRENDOUS so the colour looks 10X worse!
Once my face has been covered in the melted balm, I take a flannel, soak it in hot water and gently pat/compress into my skin. Rather than washing this straight off, using the flannel will ensure that all makeup, oil and dirty is removed from the skin and it (again) feels very nice! It also clears the pores, something I don’t have too big odd an issue with just yet, but noticed! Then I squeeze the flannel out and run it under slightly cooler water, and gently wipe my whole face with it which just ensures the remains of the balm is gone. My skin feels so much happier when I use this, the richer formula and without a doubt the natural ingredients are a lot kinder, help to combat dryness. It also thoroughly cleans the skin, taking away all traces of makeup without the use of several face washes, tones and goodness knows what else! I’ve not been sticking to one cleanser recently, but when I used this alone for a whole week, my face felt softer, smoother and like I mentioned before the massaging and home pamper feeling was brilliant for preparing for bed and a good nights rest!

DSCN0055

Here is the balm slightly melted. This isn’t really a morning cleanser, but for me it ticks all MY boxes for a great evening one. It removes makeup, and goodness knows what else our skin comes into contact with so thoroughly, WITHOUT drying the skin that I couldn’t ask for much else. I love the feeling of the balm on my skin, and also the feeling of buffing it out and having a squeaky clean soft face afterwards! If you are looking to try a decent hot cloth balm, but don’t want to splash out, I’d strongly recommend checking this out ^_^

Final Verdict:
Product rating: 8.5
Pros: Is a fantastic cleanser, Organic and full of skin loving ingredients, feels wonderful massaged on the skin, leaves the skin clean and NOT dry, great for winter.
Cons: The smell and the colour aren't the most appealing.
Repurchase? I do really enjoy using this and love how the ingredients are so skin friendly, so yes :)

Review | Superdrug Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser

Superdrug hot cloth cleanser review

Hi Guys!

I've been really busy today, since finding out I've got a place in Uni I've had to sort out a new student bank account, work out ways and prices to commute and next on my list is..well getting the reading list sorted out! I also have a wedding to attend tomorrow which I'm super excited about as I’ve not been to one in two years and I love an excuse to dress up and see family as much as the next girl ^_^

Today I’m going to be reviewing a skincare product from the Superdrug range (I was able to test this out thanks to my lovely auntie) The Vitamin E Hot Cloth Cleanser - link

Superdrug Hot Cloth Cleanser

Now everyone knows how important it is to remove your makeup at the end of the day, to keep the pores clear and keep skin looking at its best..but it’s not always something we look forwards too! There are a range of ways to remove za makeups (ok no more strange accents I promise) including facial wipes, foaming cleansers, bioderma and this method using a ‘hot cloth’. I think this first exploded into the beauty world through the now infamous Liz Earle’s H.C.C. My aunties and mum are all big fans of this as are many other YouTubers and bloggers! It’s a fantastic product, but the price range isn’t the most affordable for someone on a budget.

Which is where this nifty product comes in! Available online and instore, this is a superdrug own branded hot cloth cleanser. You get 200ml of the good stuff and a Muslin Cloth that is easily washed too.

Superdrug hot cloth cleanser review

It’s USP is that it is rich in Vitamin E (very moisturising, has some protection against UV rays though it cannot be classed as a sunscreen and it’s also known to heal wounds and fight against aging YAY VITAMIN E!!)

The concept of a hot cloth cleanse is you squeeze out some of the cleanser and rub it into your skin. Then run the muslin cloth under hot (but not overly hot/boiling) water and gently wipe the cleanser and all that makeup off. The benefits of hot cloth cleansing is it removes ALL the makeup, not like when you use a facial wipe or even a cotton pad because your skin can be left tacky and it doesn't always have that FRESH feel..ya feel me?!

Putting moisturiser on straight after doing a hot cloth cleanse was the BEST feeling ever, and I'm definitely going to treat my skin right and do this more often!

Superdrug hot cloth cleanser review

I love the price point of this (usually £6, currently a fiver) and the amount you get too. It is a drugstore brand so it’s not going to have ingredients as awesome as the more expensive ones, but it does the job very well and it great value for money. I would highly recommend this to everyone, budget or not as it really is a great cleanser. Also scent wise (when I COULD actually smell it) it smelt lovely, not too strong and not at all artificial, so I'm sure it would be awesome for sensitive skins as well as normal-dry.

Have you tried any hot cloth cleansers? What do you like to use to take off your makeup? I’d love to know ^_^
