Review | Colourpop Shadows in Get Lucky, Mooning, Shop & To-A-T

Colourpop super shock shadows in get lucky, shop, mooning, to-a-t and Blusher in Between The Sheets review and swatch

Hello everyone, today I'll be reviewing the eyeshadows and blusher I purchased a year ago in this haul. I've had plenty of time to play with them, get a feel for them and try out the hype that is colourpop! I have since placed two more orders, one which is on the way  (they had a huge 20% off sitewide sale, which knocked them backwards). Anyway I wanted to review these things for you all and to let you know what I think is worth purchasing, especially as in the UK it's such a struggle to get a hold of this brand. You either have to buy in bulk and spend a lot of money on shipping and customs, or you have to resort to paying five times the amount you'd have to pay, if you were in the U.S. In my first haul, I decided to purchase four shadows to get a feel for the different types of shadows and how well they applied. I'm going to go through each shade individually, then at the end give you a run down of my final thoughts.

colourpop get lucky shadow review and swatch

This was the first shade that I put into my basket 'Get Lucky', which is of an ultra-metallic formula and it is by far my most used eyeshadow from the four. Colourpop describe this shade as a 'true gold' and I agree. It is a gorgeous extremely pigmented, gold shade with not a lot of warmth to it. In fact I would say it does look like a duo chrome with silver in some lights, and though it's definitely a gold shade, there is a hint of silver/coolness. For most of summer 2015 I was using my bronzer in the crease and then applying this all over the lid - good to go. Super effortless yet very put together at the same time. I always apply this with my finger, for maximum pigmentation and I do really like having this shade in my collection. Sometimes gold can be a little too much for everyday, especially as this does have a very metallic finish, but I do find it to be versatile.

Rating: 5/5
Repurchase? I actually didn't pick any of these shades up again in my 2016 orders, however I would repurchase this in the future!

colourpop to-a-t shadow review and swatch

To-A-T is essentially a great transition shade and again aptly named. A mid-toned brown, which works well for every single day. You may know that the texture of the super shock shadows are very unique, they aren't creamy, but they aren't powder either - very much an in-between kind of squishy texture. I do like this shade and find it works well with other colours, but I don't pick it up enough. The colour isn't quite unique enough for me to actively search for it in my stash and usually I'll just grab my bronzer and buff that into the crease instead.

Rating: 3/5

Repurchase: No. I'd recommend this if you don't own many palettes or eyeshadows, and you're just looking for a couple of shades from colourpop. In that case it is very versatile, however I'm sure the majority of us have a similar shade already!

The next shade that I picked up is Shop and I'm sure I must have seen it in a few tutorials on youtube and been inspired because it's really not the typical kind of colour I'd go for! Shop is described as a rusty coral and it is a matte formula. Although it looks quite bright in the pan, it translates as more of a softer shade. I again agree with their description of the shade, however their mattes are not actually true matte shades. They all have a bit of sheen to them, and shop even has the faintest golden shimmers which don't really show on the eyes, but do when swatched once or twice. Although I was intimidated by it for a long time, applied with a small blending brush right into the crease and WOW, it is gorgeous! The perfect hint of a pop of colour, for those like me who tend to gravitate towards neutrals day in day out. I have a feeling I'll be getting a lot more use out of this over the next few weeks. Also shop and to-a-t go together beautifully well!

Rating: 4/5

Repurchase? Since picking this shade up I have purchased quite a few similar colours which work in a similar way, so although I am loving using these it's not on my repurchase list.
colourpop shadow in mooning review and swatch

The final shade is Mooning, a GORGEOUS buttery dark rich chocolate shade. It is extremely pigmented, one swipe and I have more than enough to pack the shade all over my lid. There are some shimmers/glitters in this shadow, lighter brown and red sparkles but they only show up when swatched. I did try packing this on with a small brush in the crease to see if the shimmers would show, but I didn't have much luck. Anyway this is another shade which, like 'to-a-t' is a perfectly good shade but I just don't reach for it enough. I think I'll be keeping this with my general palettes, so when I'm doing more of a smokey eye I can pop some of this into the look. It's not an everyday kind of shade for me at all and as lovely as it is, I just haven't really gotten my moneys worth unfortunately.

Rating: 4/5

Repurchase: No. It's too dark for all over the lid (for me anyways!) and like I said I've not worn it enough since its been in my stash.
Colourpop super shock shadows in get lucky, shop, mooning, to-a-t and Blusher in Between The Sheets review and swatch

Swatches: Get Lucky, To-a-T, Shop, Mooning, Between The Sheets

And finally we have the only blusher I purchased called 'between the sheets'. As you can see from the swatch above, it's lovely everyday kind of blush shade. The formula is that same cream type of squishy one that the eyeshadows are made with. I apply the blush with the E.L.F Small Stipple Brush which I love, or I simply use my fingers to pop a little onto the apples of my cheeks. Overall though I go through phases of really liking this and then feeling pretty eh about it...it's great for the days where I just need a simple colour on the cheeks but I'm not crazy about it. I don't find the lasting power to match my absolute favourite (NARS) and of course it's not really going to compare at its price point, but I feel like I've just been spoilt and it's hard for other blushers to really impress me D:

Rating: 3/5

Repurchase: No I won't be picking this up again, nor will I be purchasing any other blushers from the colourpop range, there are too many other stand out products for me to want to try ^_^

All in all, my personal opinion is that as lovely as the colourpop super shock shadows are, you should be picky when choosing from the extensive range. Personally I'm only going to be purchasing either the shades that'll make my eyeshadow look pop (vivid golds, glittery shades for packing onto the middle of the lid, bronzes etc) OR shades I'd use everyday, but that are unique. I now own a tonne of of Makeup Geek shadows, so I don't really want to be picking up more shadows from colourpop that are super pretty...because there are far too many! So I really recommend watching youtube tutorials, googling shades and thinking carefully about how often you'll use that shade and if you really need it.

Another thing is that the formula of these means they have to be closed really tightly. So I don't know if its just because I'm a little lazy, but having loads of pots to open and close over and over gets a little tedious to me! Plus they're quite bulky in size, and although they do fit into muji drawers, I really don't have the space to have loads and loads of these in my collection.

I do have one or two hauls coming up soon from colourpop, which is exciting. I'll also be updating my post on how to ship colourpop to the UK, as the site I used this time is a lot cheaper than the last yaaaaaaaay!

Have you got any favourite super shock shadows? What are your thoughts?

I'm going to go through each shade individually, then at the end give you a run down of my final thoughts.

What being on a 7 month makeup spending ban taught me

Hello everyone, I hope you're all well. Today isn't a review or a haul, its more of a reflective post that I wanted to share with you all, on what I learnt from not buying makeup for a total of seven months. In some ways it sounds so over-dramatic, it's not like I went 4 years without buying it (ha! as if!), but for someone who keeps up with blogs and youtube, not to mention runs her own beauty blog I have to say its an achievement I am proud about! I explained in this post why I chose to stop buying makeup for a while, it was initially meant to be till I turned 21, but I did end it one month early. Needless to say I learnt a couple of lessons over the many weeks, that have certainly impacted my buying decision for now and the future.

1. Regularly rotating your stash is the ONLY way to get the most out of all your makeup.

Whether you have 4 foundations or 14, if you just stick to the same one or two you're going to end up wasting money and product. Rotating products around not only gives you some variation, it also means that you can pass on products which don't work well for you! Plus rediscovering that palette you were obsessed with last year is always a great feeling, in fact it's almost like buying a brand new item of makeup (without your bank balance hating you haha) ^_^

2. No more buying budget eyeshadow palettes for me.

When I first started my blog I was smitten with drugstore products and determined to find the best ones out there. However over the last couple of years, especially when I began boycotting brands who fund zionism, my focus shifted to higher end brands. I began to realise that sometimes you really do get what you pay for and although I still LOVE certain budget products, I have definitely becoming more of a high end girl. Looking through my collection of makeup, I've realised how many budget eyeshadow palettes I own, especially from the brand revolution. Although I still adore Sleek makeup (which was the first brand of palettes I got into), I've decided to stop buying drugstore eyeshadow palettes unless I am TOTALLY in love with most of the shades there..and even then it would have to be major 😍😍😍. This is because I've invested quite a bit of money in my MUG and ABH palettes, and I have a nice collection of Too Faced palettes too. I have used palettes and shadows of very high quality and I absolutely love that they last all day, don't crease and don't fade, unlike a lot of budget brands. So as far as eyeshadow palettes are concerned, I'm no longer going to be spontaneously picking up random ones here and there, because I've realised I just prefer the quality of high end better.

3. It is totally worth waiting at least a month, before purchasing something that has caught my eye.

I admit it. I am an impulse buyer. Before this long long break of not buying makeup, I would buy almost anything that I wanted. Not super pricy stuff, like the £60+ zoeva eyebrush kit, but pretty much most things that caught my eye. And when one reads blogs on an almost daily basis, this becomes an expensive impulsive habit! So when I was on my seven month ban, there were multiple times where I read, watched or saw something and literally reached for my purse or felt my fingers itch to order it ASAP. But then I remembered that I had declared upon ze blog that I would not be buying makeup and I quickly, if a little reluctantly exited the window and got on with my day. And within a week or two I ended up realising that actually I didn't really need, nor want the product which I was so close to impulsively purchasing!

4. Look through your collection and figure out what you actually want, rather than blindly purchasing products that just look good.

This is very much related to the point above and it's something that I just wasn't doing enough. Most people won't have this issue, but I'm sure my fellow bloggers can relate that before long you have a tonne of products, and to be honest being overwhelmed by my collection was one of the reasons I decided to go on the ban in the first place! However that doesn't stop the love or need for purchasing and trying new products. So the solution to this dilemma? Go through your collection, note down what you own, declutter and get rid of the things that you bought too long ago. This will help you keep control of what you own and then you can make a mental note of what you're actually lacking, or what you would like to try more of. For example, I have decided I've tried more than enough budget concealers to know what works and what doesn't, however I'm still yet to find my perfect under-eye corrector. So that is what I'll be on the hunt for!

5. No more buying lipstick shades just because they're on a great offer..or because maybe one day you'll reach for that shade.

Oh my goodness, the amount of lipsticks I own is shocking for someone who gravitates to towards the same shades all the time. I have a shocking amount and the love for liquid lipsticks that I have, means there is NO sign of my collection stopping its growth. In the past I have taken advantage of lots of offers, just because they were a good deal and I've ended up with shades I literally just swatch. I'd never wear them out of the house, but I picked them up thinking 'yippee, I got such a great deal!'. I'm not saying that I'm going to stop hunting for great deals, definitely not! However I am going to be a lot more careful about what I pick up now. In the past couple of months, whilst I've not been buying makeup, I've actually been looking into shades I really want to get my hands on. Like the point above, if I keep thinking about that shade I know I actually want it, so I write it down onto a wishlist. Since the ban has been over, I've had the opportunity to purchase a couple of them (for example 'committed' from The Balm) and I have been over the moon with it ^_^ So aside from my large colourpop order, I am no longer going to purchase shades that I'll rarely pick up, like purples, blues, greens etc. They might be fun to mess about with, but they're kinda a big waste of money and space ._.

6. Be weary of 3for2 deals - yes they're awesome, but don't rush into buying stuff just because.

I LOVE me a good 3for2 and boots do it best! However I realised whilst on my ban and when going through my collection, that the products which I disliked or felt eh about, were the ones added spontaneously to the basket during one of these offers. So again, very much linked into my new kind of attitude around buying makeup, I've decided to start writing things down that catch my attention. If there is a special offer on, such as a 3for2 involving something I've written down, then I'll take advantage of the offer...if not, then keep in mind there will always be more in the future. I don't know what it is about a special offer which causes me to lose my common sense and pick up things just because they're on a great deal - but it has to stop and I think I've finally curbed this issue!

7. Stop falling for the 'free delivery if you spend X amount'

I am always up for online shopping when I read the words 'free delivery' and to be honest there is not much more that irritates me than being charged more than £2 for post and packaging. For example, guru makeup emporium charge around £4.50 for a light delivery, which upsets me very much. But as much as this upsets me, I've come to the harsh reality that a lot of the things which I don't care for in my stash, that are pretty much just gathering dust are things I picked up for the sake of getting to the free delivery criteria. Not to mention that I start off my online shopping 'trip' with the intention to purchase one or two items, but end up getting a lot more and spending £30 here, £30 there...it adds up. The result is an angry bank account, a lack of savings and to be quite honest a bunch of things I never needed or wanted. It took a long break from buying makeup to bring me to this realisation, so from now on, if I really want something I'll just pay the postage and purchase that alone. In the long run, this will keep my spending on track and my collection of makeup under control. Win-win!

So to conclude, going on this extensive seven month ban from buying makeup has taught me so much! It has allowed me to see the mistakes I was making when shopping online and also how to save more money whilst still being able to try new products too ^_^ I don't feel the need to put myself on bans anymore, which is a change as when I've looked through my previous blog posts over the years I've always had a pretty negative way of thinking when treating myself. Thats because I had no idea how to get a good balance, but this ban has helped me to get that totally under control. I feel good about purchasing new makeup, knowing that I'm a lot more careful with the products I actually choose to pick up!

What are your thoughts on going on a makeup buying ban? Are they successful for you?

May 2016 Favourites

Hello everyone, it feels so great to be writing a monthly favourites again ^_^ This month the majority of my favourites have been new purchases and there is nothing like new makeup to make me feel excited!

freedom pro studio priming water dupe smashbox priming water, blistex relief cream liquid lipstick prep

I'm going to start off with the least swoon-worthy items, but these are the products that have been helping my makeup game stay relatively strong, so they're just as important! The Freedom Priming Water (£6.00) is supposedly an exact dupe for the smashbox version, which is an unethical brand so I never had any intention of picking it up. Anyway, the freedom brand in general are known for creating cheeky dupes, I know there are mixed opinions on this but personally I think it’s great to have a brand that creates budget alternatives. I DIGRESS. This water contains a high amount of glycerin, which is also a concentrated ingredient in the much talked about Nivea post shave balm. It is the glycerin which helps the makeup stick to the skin and I find this priming water works well. I spray some on just after moisturising, let it set into the skin for 30 seconds and continue with my makeup. When I’ve finished my makeup, I spritz this over the top and my makeup lasts well.  I also love this for further dampening my beauty blender before I start blending out my concealer - it actually makes a difference to the amount of creasing under the eyes!

As I’ve mentioned now that I’m back to buying makeup, liquid lipsticks are my new best friends. However they do dry out the lips no matter how light the formula, so using the Blistex Relief Cream (£2.65) at night as a lip mask has been making all the difference. I wake up with soft plump lips and without this gem of a product, I wouldn't be able to enjoy the Liquid Lipsticks I own! It’s also one of the first products I spoke about on my blog back in 2013, which shows it has stood the test of time.

Gerard Cosmetics Hydra Matte Lipstick in Everything Nice the balm liquid lipstick in committed

Talking about Liquid Lipsticks, the two that have been floating my boat in May are offerings from Gerard Cosmetics and The Balm. I reviewed the Gerard Cosmetics Hydra Matte Lipstick in Everything Nice (£9.50) here, which is a beautiful muted orange toned nude colour. When I say orange, I mean it in the most flattering way and there is just a tiny hint. It’s also one of the only shades I like to wear alone, as most ‘nude’ shades just look a little off on me.  I won't waffle on too much as I have a whole review up already, but great shade and an awesome formula!

The most recent addition to my LL stash is The Balm’s Meet Matt(e) Hughes Long-Lasting liquid lipstick in Committed (£13.50) which I first saw on Katy's snap months ago. This is another everyday kind of shade, although its more pink than I usually go for. It's probably the only sort of colour that I think is appropriate for work from my collection of LLs so far...and the formula is AMAZING. It has an odd cooling effect on the lips and a vanilla scent, dries down fairly quickly and lasts well throughout the day. It does fade in the inner part of the lips after eating oily food, but the fact that this formula doesn't dry my lips out much at all means it's landed a spot in my favourites.

coty airspun loose powder, kat von d shade and light palette, la girl pro conceal HD concealer in pure beige

The Coty airspun powder loose powder in translucent ($8.99) has been a firm favourite this month, as has the technique known as 'baking'. Only I don't like to leave the powder on for too long, or else it just looks a little too matte and feels a lot drier than it needs to be. I own the NARS loose powder too, however I much prefer the Coty one for baking, its affordable and does the job well. Plus it really is translucent, at first it looks a little too light but it ends up almost undetectable. There is a LOT less creasing under the eyes and the oily areas are kept under control too! Couldn't ask for a whole lot more really ^_^

The L.A Girl Pro HD Concealer in Pure Beige (£5.00) is my perfect match and I have been using it a tonne this month thanks to those pesky blemishes on my face. The formula of this concealer, as well as the extensive shade range, is what has me coming back to it time and time again!

And finally on the powder front, back to an oldie but an absolute goodie the Kat Von D Shade + Light Contour Palette ($46.00) has been popping up all over my social media accounts because I can't stop adoring it, the love for this runs DEEP. I use every single shade, although the yellow shade is clearly the most frequently tapped into. If I only have 5 minutes to do my makeup, this palette is one of the only things I reach for because I can set, bronze, contour and eyeshadow my face in a matter of minutes.

becca champagne pop highlighter UK Topshop mohawk bronzer

YES THAT IS CHAMPAGNE POP *squeals* one of the best birthday presents I have ever received in my whole entire life (thank-you Ayesha🙊). I finally have the most coveted highlighter on this planet and it is absolutely stunning, no other highlight has been on my face since I received this beauty. The only thing I want to note is, if you have texture on your face, this does highlight them, so either go in with a light hand or wait for the 'poured'/ cream version to be released in the UK. I'm definitely planning on getting my hands on the liquid version and I'm thrilled that its permanent.

The bronzer that I have not been able to put down this month is Topshop's Mohawk (£9.00). I've had it for a while, but always opted for highend bronzers and totally overlooked this gem in my stash! It's a couple of shades deeper then my skintone, so not too red nor grey toned. Just the perfect bronzer shade which warms my complexion up beautifully! I typically do the '3' bronzer motion on the sides of my face and dust some on my nose, which gives me a lovely warmth to my face. It also blends really nicely, resulting in an actually natural look - I am smitten!

morphe M330, morphe M139, Illamasqua Ore pigment

As you may know, I've picked up quite a few Morphe eyeshadow brushes lately, however the two that have been most used are the M330 and the M139. The first M330 Blending Crease brush (£4.95) is a brilliant blending brush, for that transition shade, for merging colours together and for everything in between. Its basic but very much an essential and priced at less than a fiver, I need a couple more! The M139 Tapered Crease Blender Brush (£2.50)  is just as amazing, especially if you have a smaller lid space. This brush is like the little sister to the M330 and I love how its half the price too ^_^ another brush that I need to restock on, it's wonderful for the crease too!

A product I've had in my stash for a couple of years now, which I always whip out for every special occasion is the Illamasqua pigment in 'Ore' (£17.00). It is very hard to describe but I'll have a go...a bronzy/gold with flecks of silver and a tiny hint of khaki. Google the shade and you'll hopefully see what I mean from the swatches available online. Anyway I adore this pigment, it's very versatile depending on what colour base you apply underneath and how you apply it too. For my 21st birthday I did a smokey eye, with this packed all over the lid and I was obsessed with how it turned out. It's a pricy little investment, but so worth it for how it adds a gorgeous touch to my eye makeup.

Those are all my favourites of May! Have you tried any of these products?

Thank-you for reading ♥
