Oh sleek. How I adore thee. One of my favourite drugstore brands without a doubt, they never fail to deliver when it comes to the cheeks. I purchased this blush palette a while ago, but I’ve only got around to playing with it recently as I’ve not been the biggest cream blush fan –too much pigment and always too thick//too runny in my experience... That is until now!

Oh sleek. How I adore thee. One of my favourite drugstore brands without a doubt, they never fail to deliver when it comes to the cheeks. I purchased this blush palette a while ago, but I’ve only got around to playing with it recently as I’ve not been the biggest cream blush fan –too much pigment and always too thick//too runny in my experience... That is until now!

The CALIFORN.I.A palette is the singular blush by 3 that contains only cream blushers. They cost £9.99 (superdrug) which is a bargain considering you get 3 blushers and it works out at costing you £3.33 each! wow. The total weight is 13g so you have around 4g of each blush, again making it very very reasonable! The formula is wonderfully soft and creamy without being too squishy or too liquidish which was always something that put me off about cream blush before this. It is a happy medium, so well done Sleek - formula is on point.

The finish is what both surprised and pleased me, as it looks very natural and effortless but without being over the top dewy/shiny. It dries down to a stain like finish which not only enhances the longevity but also contributes to the blush looking au natural. I love how easy it is to apply with your fingers! As you might be able to see I did try and apply it with an ebay stippling brush and the amount of pigment it picked up scared me off totally. However with the fingers, if you dab a little onto the cheeks you have total control over the amount of colour being distributed –  which is so important when it comes to blush!

You can use these as a light wash of colour, or build it up a little more for a pop. Also cream blush works wonderfully for dry skin tones as it doesn't accentuate dry patches, nor does it look powdery.

The packaging is the standard black sleek and sturdy rectangle, with a handy full sized mirror on the inside lid. This size packaging is really handy for travelling as you can clearly see your whole face within the mirror and it’s light enough to hold up while you do your eyes, cheeks etc. I ALWAYS have a blush palette or the face form kit with me when I’m staying away anywhere. The shade names are written on the back clearly.

As the name might suggest, this is most definitely a summer palette. The shades are as follows:

OC: The pinkest toned coral I own. This shade looks absolutely stunning on anyone who is around NC30 plus, or with olive skintones/a tan because boy oh boy does it compliment us well! I think pinks can be tricky when you have a warmer skintone as sometimes they clash quite drastically with the amount of warmth in our skintone - and it can be enough to put people off pinks.  But this one is different – as long as you start off gently and add more if you feel necessary. The balance between cool and warmth in the pink, and also the ability to sheer it would is just wonderful.

The Surf: A light peach shade with golden shimmer. On my skintone this doesn’t show up the greatest and is my least used shade. However I do like layering this up with Newport Peach because they compliment each other beautiful and the slight shimmer gives a bronzy/summer makeup look that extra pizazz. This would look gorgeous on lighter skintones, and it would make a stunning, yet subtle, cream highlighter for deeper skintones.

Newport Peach: My favourite shade of the trio, this is a failproof true coral which leans ever so slightly more on the orange side. Again a shade that would be flattering for all skintones, I love how this looks applied just over the contour line, it gives a stunning sculpting effect whilst still adding colour to the cheeks (a different way of applying blush if you’re bored of your usual swirling on the apples of the cheeks!)

Final Verdict:

Product rating: 9

Pros: It’s the perfect summer cheek palette and great for beginners with cream blush too! The formula is perfect, they’re easy to apply with fingers and you can layer them up without fuss, you can get a very natural looking flush of colour that lasts a decent amount of time!

Cons: The Surf isn’t the most versatile colour for medium skintones.

Repurchase? When I finally do finish it off I probably will because the shades,formula and price of this palette are so on point!

Review | Sleek Blush by 3 in Pumpkin

Hi ladies! Today I am reviewing another one of Sleek’s blush-by-3’s in ‘Pumpkin’.

Sleek Blush-By-3 in Pumpkin | £9.99

Sleek are famous for their blushers, i’m pretty sure their cheek products and their eyeshadows are the first thing that pop’s to most people’s minds. As a brand they have just gone from strength to strength through the years. I think price point their blush-by-3s are phenomenal! A tenner for one, which means each shade costs £3.33 - insane value for money. I love that Sleek started as a drugstore (actually marketplace) brand to cater for women of colour, and lets start by saying that this PUMPKIN blush by three is a must for women of NC40+.

This trio has a matte, satin and slight shimmer blush and all three colours are completely different. The bright and loud and frankly unique colours really intrigued me, you would probably find it very hard to find that orange or red shade from any other drugstore brand! Although it’s not a fool

-proof blush palette in the slightest, it’s a really fun one to have in your collection.

The packaging is your standard black sleek rectangle. I love that it has a full sized mirror inside it, very handy for when travelling (as is the range of colours!). You also get a decent 6.66g of each blush and trust me this palette in particular will last you a looooong while, you have no worries there! If I’m honest I would have preferred to have something on the outer packaging to distinguish this trio from the others, but since there is non I have decided to keep it in it’s packaging when it’s chilling out in my muji, and not in my current ‘rota’.

However I personally wouldn’t recommend this for very fair skintones who are newbies to blush! I am of a medium skintone myself and I found this trio was pretty challenging to work with. The bright bold colours come on very strong so I was glad to have two full weeks to really experiment with different brushes and different techniques. I have found that a gentle brush against the blush and then dabbing it onto my arm first to sheer the pigmentation, works best. I thought I had become pretty good with using a light hand...needless to say after resembling a clown I was proven wrong! I’m going to go through each shade; (I really do like how they have named each shade!)

P.PIE: This red shade is my favourite of the trio. It has a slight sheen to it which looks beautiful as it catches the light and I think its a very flattering shade when worn correctly. My favourite way to apply this shade is using the Real Techniques Duo-Fibre Contour Brush. Once I have tapped it into the blush pan and dabbed it against my arm, I gently pat this directly over my contour line and blend upwards ever so slightly. It looks amazing when I have bronzed up skin, but I think it would also look stunning against fair skin-tones if used VERY sparsely. It also makes a wonderful difference to your typical pinks and peaches. It has a very subtle golden shimmer to it, when swatched on my hand you can see the little glimmers but because I apply it with such a light hand (and after the pigmentation has sheered out on the back of my hand) you can’t see the shimmer, it’s just more of a glow.

Squash: This is a shade which I would normally run a mile from, which is odd considering the two shades either side of it right? But I’ve just never enjoyed this bright pink against an olive skintone. However when sheered out it looks alright, a little like I’ve been out for a jog. I only wore this shade alone once, and then decided to add a tiny bit of the orange shade and I did prefer those two together over the pink alone. Perhaps I would prefer this if it was a matte shade? It’s just not my type of pink y’know?

Lantern: The only matte shade of the bunch, this is an orange pop of colour that without a doubt drew me to the palette. Sleek weren’t kidding by calling them ‘intense pigments’! I can picture this shade looking absolutely gorgeous on deeper skintones (in fact all three would!). Personally I love to wear lantern very lightly and then add a tiny bit of P.PIE over the top. The layering of the two colours are so unique and refreshing at the same time! I also love that this is a true matte shade ^_^

As you can see from the ends of these swatches when slightly sheered out the shades do look less intimidating than with a heavy swatch!

Also given the range of colours in this trio alone, there must be a shade from the three that would work well for just about anyone. Remember its more about the technique of applying these, and once you get the to work - they can work a treat!

However the tiny amount that I use each time I open the palette means that this is going to be in my collection for a very very very long time! You really do get your money’s value when it comes to their blushers!

All in all I think this is a beautiful transition blush palette from summer-autumn. I wouldn't reach for these shades in the winter, and they’re a little too bright for the spring but I have thoroughly enjoyed the past fortnight just forcing myself to embrace other blush colours! I would highly recommend this to those of you with deeper skintones as the shades are just phenomenal. Again for ladies of a light-medium tone complexion, tread carefully as this stuff shows little mercy!

Sidenote: I would NOT recommend grabbing any of these shades when running late for work, unless you want to spend the journey desperately rubbing at your cheeks with a stippling brush of course!

Final Verdict:

Product rating: 7.5

Pros: Three extremely pigmented blushers, wide variety of colours in one palette, three different finishes, they work well layered or blended together, different from the drugstore norm, fantastic value for money, sturdy packaging, great mirror.

Cons: This isn’t a palette for beginners to blush nor is it one I would highly recommend to light skintones. You need to have a very light hand and a duo-fibre brush is recommended.

Repurchase? Let’s face it ladies, I’ll NEVER have to repurchase this because I use such a tinsy amount each time! But if it starts looking abit funky I'd have to say no because of the huge amount of blushers in my collection as it is - and the fact that I can't use this often enough to justify it.

Hi ladies! Today I am reviewing another one of Sleek’s blush-by-3’s in ‘Pumpkin’.

The Long Awaited Sleek Haul!

Hello! Another haul in the month of Feb, BUT this was actually delivered to me a month late ._. (full story here) so it’s not broken the spending ban. In fact it’s been a real treat considering I haven’t actually purchased makeup for weeks and weeks now! ahhhh the silver lining to that cloud haha.

Anyway despite the worry of having an order go missing (my first ever internet mishap might I add) I was just as excited to open the parcel as I was when I placed it. This is because Sleek is well and truly one of my favourite makeup brands ever. They consistently produce high quality makeup for affordable prices, and their blushers are on par with the likes of NARS (my high-end fave!) When I heard they were bringing out new blushers and an eyeshadow palette I followed the details carefully and placed as order as soon as I could.

Their ‘blush by 3’ are essentially  palettes, that cost £10 each for 3 highly pigmented blusher shades. In total they have released 8, with californ.i.a and pink lemonade being their newest. I already own two, and flame is not a new release but I added this to my collection. The blush by 3’s cost £10, which is AMAZING value, as each shade is therefore £3.33. Sleek also have a number of single blushers, which cost around the £5 mark and have some stunning shades available (flamingo which I reviewed here is one of my all time favourites).

The primary reason I bought Flame was because of that brilliant bright red shade in the middle. I have heard it is a near dupe for NARS’ Exhibit A and whilst I couldn’t justify splurging alot for a shade I wasn’t sure on with NARS, coming in at £3.33 this palette was well worth buying for this shade! All three blushers are powder, and two of them are matte. 

I didn’t know that the Californ.i.a blush palette was their first consisting of ONLY cream blushers and was a little apprehensive about the quality. I’ve only  tried it once so far, and as you might have expected there was nothing to worry about, the pigmentation is plenty and the consistency is simply dreamy. A review with swatches will no doubt be coming out soon for this one as the colours are pretty much universal (unlike perhaps flame which would suit the more medium/deeper skin tones in my opinion.) 

Pink Lemonade was probably the one that I was most underwhelmed by as that purplish/pink hue isn’t something I reach for often when browsing. There is one cream blush in the middle, and two shimmer/satin shades. Having said that I know its very important not to judge a blush by its pan, and I’ve got a feeling they’re going to surprise me.

And the eyeshadow palette to rival all recent palettes to my collection *takes a moment to appreciate the gorgeousness*. It was actually this palette called Garden of Eden which confirmed that I NEEDED the new Sleek stuff! Filled with purples and greens, this is the perfect palette for all of us brown eyed girls out there, though I’m sure it would be stunning with green eyed/hazels too. What I love most is that all the greens in this palette are wearable, nothing neon or pea green, and I am so excited to start playing around with beauty. I have a growing collection of their palettes too, and although this doesn’t have any safe browns and creams I am very happy such a variety of shades has joined my stash!

I'd also like to add that this is the first time I have seen sleek give suggestions with shades on their palette packaging! How awesome is that?! Perhaps I could follow them and show you guys in the future haha..I did also see this palette was packaged in a snakeskin carboard box, which mine did not come in. I'm not too fussed, I mean it's just a box, but the limited ed packaging does look interesting^_^

I always think to myself I should do more single reviews on Sleek, so hopefully that will be schedualed somewhere! Personally though I find getting decent quality and accurate swatches the most challenging part of photography (aside for the lack of sunshine!) so I’m never 100% happy with swatches I create. Anyways enough rambling and excuses, there will be plenty more sleek coming your way here on The Blushing Giraffe!

Review | Sleek Blush – Flamingo

Hi lovelies! Today I’m going to be talking about one of my favourite blushers ever –> Flamingo

Before I get into the review, I just wanted to say a huge well done to those of you who’ve got into Uni today! I got my first choice and my grades surprised me ^_^ glad to know I’ll be doing a course I know is right for me!

Anyways Sleek is one of my favourite makeup brands hands down. It continuously delivers in good quality, highly pigmented cosmetics which suit a range of skin tone all at a very reasonable price. They’re the only high-street makeup brand with 30 shades of foundation! Sleek really does tick all the boxes. I only own two of their blushers, but I do own a few eyeshadow palettes, the brow kit and the face form kit (contour kit)

For some reason my camera didn’t quite pick up the vividness of the blush in the pan. On my finger and in the picture below is a more accurate colour match, but basically at a first glance this blush looks pretty intimidating. Its a bright in-ya-face pink, almost florescent but not quite that highlighter shade and something I’d imagine many people would shy away from.

However when used with a light hand and a fluffy (NOT dense) brush (I love using the Real Techniques blush brush) it becomes a beautiful, natural glowing pink. The slight blue tone in the makes it a cooler blush. I do tend to favour peachy tones and warmer pinks, but I have loved popping this shade onto my cheeks recently to switch things up a little bit as I think it’s all too easy to get stuck in a rut and a change is as good as a rest (refreshing ^.^) The slight sheen gives such a beautiful healthy appearance! It’s not massively shimmery as such but wearing a highlighter isn’t necessary. It can of course be built up (the more you build up the stronger the pink), but you gotta be careful with the amount of pressure applied when brushing this on because it’s one of those shade that could easily make you look like a china doll who fell into a tub of pink paint!

Price point these blushers cost £4.49. UNDER A FIVER – WINNING! Sleek also have the blush-by-3s which are £10 each with 3 different shades pinks/red/peaches) They’re on my wish list!

It has great lasting power for a drugstore brand, and the pan contains 8g which is a very decent amount, as MAC blushes only contain 6g. I also love the sleek packaging, it’s small enough to fit comfortably into your makeup bag, and it’s shape means it’s easy to stack up together with its brothers and sisters unlike SOME brand’s packaging (I'm looking at you elf studio blushers). It also has a generously sized mirror in the pan, again increasing it’s usefulness to pop into the handbag. The two swatches above show the blush in different lights. On the left is the colour close up to a window with bright sunlight shining directly at it, and on the right in warmer lighting. Either way it’s a very pretty colour that’s fast become one of my favourites.

I’m so glad I was feeling daring and picked this up, it’s a total winner. It’s also made me more interested in looking at the other brighter or unusual blusher shades in the collection, because they usually appear completely different on the skin than in the pan!

Spring Picks | Cheeks

Hello! Another post in my little spring picks series, this time focusing on the cheeks! Now you may know that I have a rather large collection of check products (not quite catching up to the wonderful Vanessa, but i’m getting there!) and so I thought I’d share the ones that I’ll be reaching for most during the spring season!

For me spring makeup is all about keeping it fresh, light and as natural as possible. There are not many rules in make, so of course wear whatever shade you like whenever you like! But if you’re on the hunt for a pretty blush that has more of a spring time vibe, keep on reading..

Sleek Blush-by-3 in Pink Lemonade | £9.99

A rather recent purchase, this little blush palette has completely taken me by surprise. When I first saw the shades I was sure they would be too light for my NC30 skin tone, but I have once again judged a blush by its pan shade and been mistake, tsk. Containing two powder blushers and one cream, Pink Lemonade is your perfect spring time companion. The lightest pink shade is quite shimmery so I do skip the highlight. It is probably my least worn shade from the trio so far, but surprising I have enjoyed popping this onto the cheeks as the warmer months have approached. The silver shimmer could be a bit intense, so a light hand is best.

The darker powder colour is the most stunning cross between a hot pink and a peachy pink, with a little golden shimmer running through it as well, but more subtle than the lighter shade. I also quite like the cream blush, which is just as pigmented as it’s powdered neighbours and transfers onto the skin as a true medium pink. I know my descriptions aren’t fantastic but google is your best friend when it comes to swatches, so go search what I mean ^_^

NARS Deep Throat | £21.50

My first ever NARS blush, and what a beauty it is! In my humble opinion D.T should have got the fame and love that the famous Orgasm blusher received, because this is the most stunning pink shade I have ever come across. It is a lighter shade of pink, with the tiniest amount of peach mixed in, so looks gorgeous on us olive skinned ladies! Although it does have a slight shimmer running through it, it’s nothing over the top or chunky. In fact it is just enough to give you that glowing and healthy appearance, and for spring time this is a no brainer! Another thing that I love about this, is how it’s pigmentation is spot on. It’s one of those fool proof options which you can pop onto your cheeks, without worrying about being light handed and know it’ll look good, which is ALWAYS a good thing!

Rimmel Pink Rose | £3.99

Another favourite of mine, this was actually one of the first blushers I purchased some 4/5 years ago when the interest in makeup first began! Pink Rose is quite a cool toned pink, which is quite rare in my collection. The reason why I love it so much is actually because of how subtle it is. Yes we all love a good pigmented blush but sometimes those can be tough to work with! That’s why when I’m in a rush and want a nice subtle glow pink rose is the shade I reach for. No highlighter required again. This is probably the sheerest of the bunch with a strong shimmer when swatched with your hand, but on my that shimmer translates as more of a healthy sheen.

Illamasqua blush in Lover | £21.50

Again another shade which I was less that impressed with upon first glace, but it took me by complete surprise when I first tried. If you’re looking for a gorgeous matte peach blusher, lover is the one for you! I love wearing this most when I am having a fairly neutral day in terms of makeup, as it adds a little bit of life but looks so subtle and elegant. It is quite a muted shade. Another plus point is you can highlight to your hearts content, due to this being matte.  A under-rated beauty in my eyes! Oh and just in case you didn’t know, Illamasqua blushers are the softest around - j’adore!

Rimmel Coral Powder Blush (111) | £1.50 (Fragrance Direct)

I picked this up from Fragrance direct for a few pounds, its not currently in stock but keep an eye out! I wasn’t expecting much but wanted to try a different shade of blush. Side by side I thought this could be a dupe for lover, but actually this has a warmer undertone, and hints of pink with and slight shimmer within it. Not disco-ball shimmer but very flattering tiny specks that can barely be detected once on the skin. I wear this as more of a bronzer and blusher in one, as it does have that orange/warmth of a tone. I think this would look stunning on skin tones lighter than mine, and also darker, however it can like a little muddy when applied with a heavy hand (though when I swatch it, it looks so much prettier on my hand :c ) I still really like the shade, and will try it with a stippling brush in the future, but wanted to recommend this for anyone looking for a peachy/warmer brush with a decent price ^_^

Illamasqua blush in Tremble | £21.50

A cool toned baby doll pink, which makes the most refreshing change from my usual coral or darker pink tones. I love how this shade really freshens up the makeup look, with its cooler tones surprisingly flattering my skintone (as long as I haven’t bronzed too much). Tremble is beautiful, and my perfect spring time shade. It has it all - great pigmentation, a matte finish, and a fresh look. I can highlight as much as I want, but still have pretty pink cheeks and with this shade I favour a cooler, silver toned highlight too, rather than my typical champagne tone. Although this looks scary in the pan, it looks quite the contrary on the cheeks. I have to say, if this post has taught me one thing, it is that I have judged far too many blushers by how they appear in the pan, and been shocked by how beautiful they look on the skin!

Spring Picks | Cheeks

Hello! Another post in my little spring picks series, this time focusing on the cheeks! Requested | How I Wear Berry Lips (Eid Makeup)

Hello everybody!

Ages and ages ago I was asked to write a post on how I wear berry lips, and even though I had a vague idea on how I would - I had never actually worn them before! I’m very much a natural my-lips-but-better type of girl and so berry lips on me are something not done often at all! Having said that I’ve discovered that it IS fun to have a play with colour, and when my Eid outfit was such a neutral colour with a berry pop, I knew I had my chance!

The word ‘berry’ in the colour spectrum is a confusing one, because it can be interpreted as pink, purple, blue, maroon and anything inbetween! But I think they all fit under a similar category - more ‘out there/oh she’s made an effort!’ and I would probably wear each of those colours in a similar way. The main thing to remember though is its only makeup and there are no REAL rules. It’s your face so don’t be afraid to experiment :)

The Base

When thinking about wearing berry lips, you want the focus of your makeup to be ON the lips, and not so much the skin. So opt for a base that will provide you with decent coverage and a matte/satin finish. I normally like to bronze up my skin, but for berry lips, you want the lips to be the main standout not the rest of your face! So I do prefer to ditch the bronzer!

The cheeks

This is the important bit for me, a berry lip means sculpted cheekbones, but not with your average contour colour! You need to pick a matte berry shade, that will effectively sculpt out your cheekbones, whilst adding a beautiful blush of colour onto your skin. Sleek’s blush-by-3 in Pink Spirit is PERFECT for this!

Taking a duo-fibre brush (this won’t pick up too much product) tap it into the blush and apply just above where you would normally apply your contour. Because its a very bronze-free look, focusing more on a strong colour with contouring, highlight is optional. Personally I find that when using my Accessorise baked bronzer (reviewed here) I can highlight to my hearts content, because its so subtle but really does bring light to the face. On the other hand, if I’m using my Mary-Lou I have to go VERY lightly, but all in all, make sure the highlight doesn’t ‘take over the face’. Read: This is not the type of look that suits that disco ball look!

The Eyes

I found the perfect palette for my Eid/berry look was ‘the vintage romance palette’ by Sleek. It’s quite a dark and dramatic palette but its perfect for special occasions!

1. I took gold shade (3rd from left) all over the first half of the lid
2. Used the gorgeous matte burnt orange/brown in the crease as the transition shade.
3. I then took a little of the very dark purple eyeshadow (second from right bottom row) on a small detailer brush, in the outer V of the eyelid
4. and then I dipped a fluffy brush into the pink shade (second from the left) and blended it all over the crease so it merged with the burnt orange shade. It took a lot of blending to make the dark shadow quite faint as I didn’t want it too be too obvious. Just to add some definition.  
5. Taking that same pinkish shade mixed with a purple under the bottom lash-line with a detailer brush I added more of the pop of colour.
6. Finally I went over the gold shade again, and put it into my inner corner too.
7. I then lined my eyes with the 2tru black liquid liner, and coated my lashed with Benefit’s They’re Real - it was a celebration after all! (Clearly I’m rubbish at describing eye looks and steps D:)

The Lips

And finally the berry lips! Like I said you could interpret this in many ways, and for this outfit, the berry shade has strong pink undertones. Therefore I decided to apply my Wet ‘n’ Wild lipstick in Sugar Plum Fairy. This was the first time I wore one of these lippies for the whole day, and I have to say I am VERY impressed! Upon application it was soft and creamy but the lasting time was amazing! Although it is a darker pink, I wanted more of a purple/berry tone so I added Rimmel’s Lasting Finish lipstick in shade 04. This is the darkest and most vampy lipstick I own, and dabbed gently ontop of Sugar Plum Fairy it makes a fantastic berry lip! Edgy with the darkness, but still a little bright with the pink tone!

Requested | How I Wear Berry Lips (Eid Makeup)

Hello everybody!

Ages and ages ago I was asked to write a post on how I wear berry lips, and even though I had a vague idea on how I would - I had never actually worn them before! I’m very much a natural my-lips-but-better type of girl and so berry lips on me are something not done often at all! Having said that I’ve discovered that it IS fun to have a play with colour, and when my Eid outfit was such a neutral colour with a berry pop, I knew I had my chance!
